Ras 74 Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Great review as always def! Crispy clear pictures, and great information as always. I don´t like the set to much though. The figs are great however. But the pricetag just makes me not liking the set even more. Quote
WhiteFang Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Brilliant review. This could be my favourite Toy Story set ever! It has all of the amazing key characters in one set, with the exception of zero villians, but this is one of the best set to acquire many main characters without spreading into many other sets. Plus the fact, that this is a lovely toy train. I really like this set and I am looking forward to get mine soon. Quote
Sir E Fullner Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 That was a lovely review. However, I do think that the old steam engine in the set could use a tender. I mean, it doesn't fell like a true American class without a tender. Quote
Big Cam Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Great review def! I feel like I own this set too. Your pictures are the best I have seen from you yet, and that's tough because they were already top quality. I just really like your thourough approach to this review. Quote
lego-maniac Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Incredible review, you really did a great work. Pics are very nice and funny, and your comments seems objective I think this set is too expansive but very interressant. thanks to share ! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Thanks for the review def, great job! The set is actually a good one especially for those who want to get most of the Toy Story characters in one buy, though it's really quite expensive. Quote
ZO6 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Finally got around to picking up this set today as it was on sale for 25% off. As expected, this set is extremely short on play functions. For something this size, I really feel that they could have packed in more than just a collapsing roof. I've picked up some of the Wild Wet sets from 1996 and am very impressed with them - the explosion functions in a couple of them is very satisfying and well integrated. With the Western Train Chase, there is a decent amount of room in a couple of the cars that is just going to waste. I think it would have been neat if an exploding feature had been packed into one or more of the cars (either with a shock absorber or some other method). Otherwise, the minifigures and smooth spinning wheels make the set fairly fun to play around with. I'm happy that I bought the set, though I'm glad I did so when it was on sale. Thanks again for the review, Def. Quote
tedbeard Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 ...this set is extremely short on play functions. I don't understand this comment and the 7/10 in the review. It's a train. That moves. The "play function" is excellent since it does what it's supposed to do (and has a trap door). What else should it do? Quote
def Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 I don't understand this comment and the 7/10 in the review. It's a train. That moves. The "play function" is excellent since it does what it's supposed to do (and has a trap door). What else should it do? Well, rolling wheels seem standard on a Lego ground vehicle. I've never considered it a play function. What else should it do? I don't work for Lego, and I just saw the film this weekend, where the train only appears in the first 10 minutes, but ... there is no scenario built in. No concept for what's happening with the set. Personally, I like paired vehicles most, or vehicles with playsets. I'm not a paid reviewer or anything, but I wonder what you think 7/10 means. For me, it means, not great, not terrible, but decent. Do you think the play features excelled on this set I dismantled this set today, and put it in a plastic bag, but I may just turn it into parts in the future. I don't see myself feeling the need to revisit it. I also placed an order for my first Knights' set, and I see myself being a heck of a lot more satisfied with it. Quote
ZO6 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I don't understand this comment and the 7/10 in the review. It's a train. That moves. The "play function" is excellent since it does what it's supposed to do (and has a trap door). What else should it do? To further explain my reasoning for being disappointed by the lack of play features in the set... First, as Def mentioned, having wheels on a set does add a level of playability, but I don't consider it much of a play function. This leaves the trap door to be the sole function. On a near 600 piece flagship set for a theme, wheels and a trap door seems extremely lacking. The minifigures of course add much to the playability of the set, but the train itself still doesn't have a lot going on. Now, yes it is just a train, who's functionality is to transport people or goods from one location to another. But how often does TLC have a set only 'do what it's supposed to' and not add extra random features? Let's start by looking at 6497 Twisted Time Train. It's a train that can be pushed around, however it's got a lot more going on - When the train is pushed, the following happens: 1. Flames pop up and down in the smoke stack 2. On the second car, a viewing platform moves up and down 3. On the third car, two accessories rotate, and wings at the side flap The Twisted Time Train has just over half the amount of pieces that the Western Train chase does, and yet it has many more functions. Going back to the Toy Story theme, even many of the other sets have the same amount of functions or more than 7597. Take Woody's Roundup or Pizza Planet Truck Rescue, they both feature play functions that were never seen in the movies. The Pizza Planet Truck shoots pizzas! Sure it's a silly function, but it still helps to bring you back to the set to play around with it. Now, don't get me wrong. I really like the Western Train Chase, or else I would not have gone and bought it myself (even after reading reviews), but I just simply feel that the set could have been a lot more fun. Quote
Commander Assassin Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Not sure if this was said yet or not, (I didn't read all three pages) but this set is not based off of any old toy train, this set is based off of itself. (The train in the movie was LEGO) Quote

bamaker Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I finally got around to picking up this set. It's only the 2nd LEGO train I've ever built, and I gotta say I really like it. I understand the criticism about the engine being so fragile, but I finally got it put together and was very happy to see it fits on LEGO train tracks (I bought the new train station at the same time). Does anybody know if anyone has managed to fit it with RC or PF to make it chug along? I was hoping to use it around the Christmas tree this December. Quote
