Help with a piece

Quick Question. I recently got a job lot of Technic pieces; and it included this (photo). It is labeled Lego 1-01... but I cannot identify it on Peeron or Bricklink (probably the wrong keyword).

Does anyone know where it comes from, and what pieces mate with it? I thought perhaps it was an engine cylinder (does not fit) or something from a suspension unit (no relevant photos).

Actually I'll have you know I've been 7 five times now.

This piece (and the two other steering parts that went with it) was used in almost every small set in the 90s. They formed a simple rack-and-pinion steering assembly. I haven't found many uses for these things outside of that though.

Indeed, many fond memories of putting that steering system together for the simple MOCs I'd make as a youngster.
