UltimateLegoMan Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 its not that difficult. You just put the lights in the front peice, and they have a convienent hole under the driver seat and the back wall in order to stick the cables. ok, thanks Quote
Legoist Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 During my PhD research I came across a solution for this. It's called "Kippfahrleitung" by Balfour Beatty Austria (the company that developed this solution) and involves a motor-controlled boom that lifts the overhead cables out of the way (pulls them up and back from the track). I was interested in an embedded system that was used to control these motors (ensuring all motors are operated synchronously on the section of railway line up to 1 km long). Just an FYI! For a second I thought you did a PhD on Lego. But nevertheless congratulations :) Quote
Brickviller Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 The first time I saw this train I was in love with it (not, but you no what I mean right? ). And thanks to this review I bought this train with lights and rechargeble battery. Expensive yes, but I have no regret buying this awesome set. Wish you could also make a review on the new passenger train because your review on this one was really good Quote

Zorbas Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 Great review Holodoc! This is a great set in my opinion especially having all these goodies that come with it. Lots of playable features, a great amount of vehicles (for a train set) and a very nice design. The only bad thing is that it costs 259 euros here. Should I laugh or should I cry? The latter I guess... Thanks again for the review! Quote
Hemish Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Great review, after purchasing the passenger train and reading this its the next on my to buy list Quote
Holodoc Posted August 24, 2010 Author Posted August 24, 2010 The only bad thing is that it costs 259 euros here. Should I laugh or should I cry? The latter I guess... Can't you order it from amazon France? That's the way I did it, because they sold the train way before it came to Germany. They are shipping abroad, but maybe Greece isn't on their list... If I can help you order it and have it shipped to you - shoot me a PM! Quote
jd5775 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 I like everything about this set except those little cars. Ugh! Quote

Just ask for the shipping costs for Greece in advance. But even with the shipping costs added, it should be much cheaper than 259 euros. Click here to get to the eBay auction. Quote

I'm doing my best to offer the Lego community the best price on lapetitebrique.fr. By the way, I think I'll keep a box for me also. Edited August 26, 2010 by La Petite Brique Quote

A great thanks for your concern and interest guys! It's very nice seeing fellow members from a COMMUNITY (caps were on purpose) trying to help each other in every way they can. I'll see what I can do and I'll let you know. Thanks again for your interest! Quote
MVE Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 (I cannot believe the last time this post was updated was back in 2010) I am thinking of getting an extra 7939 set just to get the PF for the Maersk train and I just want to confirm if there is any mistake with my reasoning: 1. The required PF parts sold separately are: * IR Remote Control 8879 - 14.95 € * Train Motor 88002 - 13.99 € * IR Receiver 8884 - 16.95 € * AAA Box 88000 - 12.99 € Sub-Total 58.88 € 2. The 7939 set includes track that sold separately would cost me: * Tracks 7499 - 16.95 € * Switching Tracks 7895 - 14.95 € Sub-Total 31.90 € So buying all the above parts separately would cost me 90.78 €!!! If I buy the 7939 set instead, I will get extra curved track, plenty of extra cars and a dummy locomotive for my current train for the price difference. This seems too good to be true so can someone please confirm: - The Maersk train can really be motorized with the PF parts from the 7939? - Do I need a separate 8879 IR remote controller for each train I have? The Lego shop page for the 7939 says "infrared remote control that controls up to 8 different trains at once". Thanks! Quote

But the PF/stuff from the 7939 has the same contents as the 7938, so it will work for you. I made 2 extra pssengercars of my third 7938 set....also just bought it for the PF/stuf to build it into my Maersk train! Succes ! Greetz, LegoSjaak Quote
AndyC Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 - The Maersk train can really be motorized with the PF parts from the 7939? - Do I need a separate 8879 IR remote controller for each train I have? The Lego shop page for the 7939 says "infrared remote control that controls up to 8 different trains at once". - Yep, all the PF parts you need for the Maersk train are included. - You don't need a seperate 8879 remote, one of them can be used for all your trains. The only advantage of more than one is that you can control more than two trains without having to fiddle about with the channel setting (Each of the four channels can control 2 trains), but that's hardly a big issue. MVE Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Thank you for the confirmation LegoSjaak and AndyC! - You don't need a seperate 8879 remote, one of them can be used for all your trains. This reduces the price I would "have to" spend! Instead of 90.78€, the PF parts for the MAERSK plus the track sets would cost me 75.83€. But it is still worth getting an extra 7939 specially since I do not pay VAT when buying from amazon and the set only costs me 107€ So be it! As soon as my first cargo train arrives by mail, I will order the second one, and then the Maersk, and then... Quote
eliminator Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 thanx for the great review, I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on this set Quote
Voodoo Hand Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 if I would get this set, I likely change it into a 9 volt train, else I don't really see the point in it besides parts My idea of a train is to have a panel that powers the train on/off, not a RC unit. Kinda find it not good to have a RC train, but that could be that I am not used to a RC train.... Anyways, it does have great parts and also some nice things that can be used on 9 volt stuff. So I guess average for this set would be fair. Quote
Holodoc Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 thanx for the great review, I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on this set It should be cheaper than the regular price posted in the opener, just because of the new cargo train. And I expect the 7939 to go off the shelves, soon. In my opinion it is well worth it (but I think you can read it from my review...) If you get it for a decent price, then do it! EDIT: More info in your topic. Quote

EDIT: More info in your topic. In Germany it might be different, but in Denmark, the 7939 and 7938 are everywhere, the 3677 is nowhere to be seen (only in non Lego affiliated webshops with dubious stock). So, I don't expect the 7939 to be unavailable anytime soon Haven't checked amazon.de/co.uk/whatever That makes me pretty sure that the 7939 is still very popular and thus not likely to out of stock Just my local observations Anyway, it's a very nice train, with lots of decent track. Get it! Edited November 7, 2011 by 1974 Quote
LegoMavrick Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Excellent review and this is definitely the set I would like to start my venture into Lego Trains with. Quote
