Calanon Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Happy St. Georges Day to all English folk!# I love England, my home it is indeed. Quote
Joey Lock Posted April 23, 2010 Author Posted April 23, 2010 Heres a quick MOC: Saint George was a Turkish Knight but he was adopted the Patron saint of England, Just like Patrick of Ireland. Most of the earlier saints come from the Mediterranean area. This because it is initially where the church was strongest. Even St.Patrick was not Irish. A saint was chosen as a patron not because of his nationality but for the inspiration given by his courage. Saint George's bravery was clearly admired by many hence his popularity as a patron in many places including England. At a time when people firmly believed that saints had extraordinary powers, it was thought he would be a protector. Since saints were regarded as guardians and were adopted by choice, several countries can share the same patron or adopt a saint that does not originate from their nation. We celebrate it because in England, a holiday in honour of St George, to be kept on 23 April, was declared by the Synod of Oxford in 1222; and St George had become acknowledged as Patron Saint of England by the end of the fourteenth century. It's strange, In the old day there would be a flag out of every house, But because of the new multi cultural England, some people have complained its too "English" which is just plain stupid. When it's St. Patricks day, Its all over the TV! St. Georges day....Nothing. But luckily, Boris Johnson is urging to make it a fully celebrated holiday. I've seen one Flag today, But we will see more during the World Cup! Quote
Alex the Great Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 England be Canada's mother country, so happy St. Georges Day everyone! Quote
tedbeard Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Odd, in Canada we use the standard lyrics "God save our gracious Queen, Long live our Noble Queen, God Save the Queen..." I guess in the "mother country" you don't have that special relationship we do. :) Funny story: when my mum was a small child she assumed people in Vancouver sang "Send her Vancouverous. happy and..." It made sense to a little a little girl from Victoria, BC who sang lustily, "Send her Victorious, happy and..." Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 You have to love England. It has to be the only country that throws the Catholic Church out on its rear end but keeps the party for its patron saint! Quote
Big Cam Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Thanks for the history lesson JL, I had neer heard of this before, and now I'm a little bit more cultured. Quote
General Redwater Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Happy St. Georges Day! ( even though I live in the U.S.) You have to love England. It has to be the only country that throws the Catholic Church out on its rear end but keeps the party for its patron saint! That is funny and ironic! - General Redwater Quote

Dragonator Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Odd, in Canada we use the standard lyrics "God save our gracious Queen, Long live our Noble Queen, God Save the Queen..." I guess in the "mother country" you don't have that special relationship we do. :) Those are the lyrics I've always known, seems the colonies have a greater relationship with Her Majesty than those in the mother country these days. Yes, happy St. George's Day everyone. A time to be singing such great patriotic hymns as "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Jerusalem". The Anglican churches here all celebrated the event last Sunday, as we have ANZAC day coming up on the 25th (our national war remembrance day), so we had the Order of St. George in attendance, and the brass bands playing Pomp and Circumstance etc. Always a fun, patriotic event. Big Cam Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 A special smiley for a special day! Very nice. Quote
Zorbas Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Happy belated St. George's Day! It is a very important date here in Greece too as St. George is considered to be one of the most important Saints and because the name "George" is the most common male one and the nameday is celebrated with great joy. Just for the record and the historical accuracy, St. George wasn't Turkish. Excellent smiley Joey! Quote
