def Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 There was some talk around here about the excellent Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon of the last few years, which was the best yet. But, it's been announced that that is over! And there will be a new one, based on the Ultimate version of the character! http://tv.ign.com/articles/108/1083412p1.html In the wake of the news about this new Spider-Man animated series, I reached out to The Spectacular Spider-Man's Supervising Producer and Story Editor Greg Weisman, who gave me this message via email: "I've heard nothing directly from Marvel, but I think the Ultimate Spider-Man announcement makes it fairly clear that Spectacular is over." Spectacular was produced by Sony, the new one is for Disney. It's a shame, but the new one should, at the least, have high production values. Let's hope the writing team respects the series as much as Spectacular's team did. Quote
FilmGirl27 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 This is terrible news, I loved Spectacular. Is it just me or is someone trying to kill all the good things about Spider-Man? Quote
Oky Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 It always makes me so sad when quality cartoons like this get canceled before their time. Spectacular really had potential. Oh well. But why didn't you just post this in the cartoons thread where the discussion about this show was taking place? I mean, why create a new topic? The purpose of the cartoon thread was it not to have a thread for every single cartoon out there. Quote

The purpose of the cartoon thread was it not to have a thread for every single cartoon out there. I didn't start a thread for every cartoon out there, and I'll probably never start a thread for another cartoon. I just like Spider-Man. Is that so wrong I've watched most of the five (?) generations of cartoon, from the 60s, 80s, 90s, and both from the 00s. The computer animated one from MTV with Neil Patrick Harris as Spider-Man was criminally passed over, in my opinion, while the 90s one is totally over-rated. This is worth chatting about (if you've seen them ) Quote
sok117 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I always liked spectacular, but I thought they could of done a better job designing the characters. They just looked... weird. I also like it better when Spider-man is an adult rather then just a kid, it just seems kind of juvenile. Oh well, I hope Ultimate Spider-man is better, though It kind of sounds like there trying to copy TBATB with the whole teaming up thing. Quote
Batbrick Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Hmmm, heard about this the other day, a sad thing indeed. With this and Wolverine and the X-Men being cancelled, it seems Marvel has turned over a new obsession with killing off its best properties. But why didn't you just post this in the cartoons thread where the discussion about this show was taking place? I mean, why create a new topic? With this and Wolverine and the X-Men being cancelled, it seems Marvel has turned over a new obsession with killing off its best properties. I think it's in line with seizing control of their properties, and will pay off. It's no secret that the Marvel made movies have been of a higher quality than the outside studio ones, and I think the same will happen with the Disney studio animation. I was disappointed by the DVD movies that came out though, they weren't so great. Though truer to the characters than in the past. Also, I'll rename this "Marvel cartoons" so there's a little more flexibility. Quote

Is that so wrong I don't think you're overreacting enough there. Sorry. Just thought it was a bit unnecessary. I never meant to imply that you were the one posting threads about every cartoon, def. And excuse me if my overreacting skills aren't as great as yours, Batbrick! I guess widening it to all Marvel cartoons is better. I've watched most of the five (?) generations of cartoon, from the 60s, 80s, 90s, and both from the 00s. This is worth chatting about (if you've seen them ) What do you mean "criminally passed over"? I've only seen the minisodes of the MTV one. It didn't seem very good. And yes, the 90s one is overrated. The timing on it was terrible. Sometimes I didn't even know what was going on, which is why I stopped watching after only a few episodes. Hopefully this new show will be decent. As for Marvel movies, Doctor Strange and Iron Man were pretty lame. Planet Hulk was alright, I guess. Hulk VS. Thor/Wolverine was amazing, though, and so was the Ultimate Avengers trilogy, although the last one with the kids wasn't so great. Edited April 16, 2010 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote

The MTV was a little awkward in the animation, but the voice talent was great... Neil Patrick Harris has since become super popular, but at the time he was still just Doogie Howser. His voice is great as Spider-Man. Also, they set it at university, which is the best time period for Peter. Not too much responsibility, but not too much Aunt May and living in Queens. The writing was good too, they used the old characters to good effect. Not as good as Spectacular did, but it was well done. And it was targeted at teens (MTV) so it was more mature overall. The 90s one suffered from being on Fox, being in the 90s, being too immature, and having the worst spin off ever. Quote
sok117 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Wait when was wolverine and the X-men canceled?!?!?!?!? I love that show!! Quote
Oky Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 While it wasn't a great show, it was certainly one of the more watchable X-Men shows, and kept me interested enough to keep watching. Too bad to see it go too. Quote
