Now that I am half way done my second ship I realized that I am not the best stern builder. On my last ship, my stern was more of a boxy shape than slanted and beautiful. I am hoping for people to post their tips or pictures of sterns so I could build off some ideas to make a better one.

Hopefully this is where i post this... :pir-blush:

Yes, this is where you post topics concerning ANYTHING to do with pirate lego that isn't a MOC.

well... sterns.............................

sterns are rather tough to do, and i'm sure most would agree...

for one, you'll need to know its basic shape. is it boxy? round? slanted at the back? in what ways are it slanted? is it on multiple decks? Does the shape go along with the 'shape' of the rest of the ship?

second, you need an idea of how and where you'll position the windows. What kind of windows will you use? how many?

next, you'll need to know what the walls atop the sterncastle will be like. In the HMS circumstance (see the link in my sig) I used a solid wall. In the IFS, a "wooden" railing is used. In the HMS Beagle, I'm going to use a railing made of rope.

next, you need to turn this idea into reality. Does it look right? are the any changes i ought to make? does it follow the colorscheme? is it the right size?

next, comes detailing. There's a few ways of doing detail. for one, you'll probably be using a lot of 1x1 cones. second, it needs to flow nicely with the colorscheme. third, it all needs to flow together nicely, and eloquently. Do I have enough detail? Do I have too much detail? Lanterns? Outcroppings*? Does it POP enough? Does it NOT pop enough? Is it attractive?

before you design your stern, look at the sterns of some ships of a similar size. I could imagine that your doing a somewhat small ship, Here is an example of a stern for a 'smaller' ship

hope that helps!

Yes, that does very well help. My main idea is a frigate stern that is slanted at the back. I want to use 5 windows, 3 at the back and 1 on each side. My overall goal is to make the stern look like the HMS Surprise. I have been working on if for quite some time, but I just can't put my finger on it.... :pir-sceptic:

In that case, you should check out Admiral Croissant's frigate! He based it on the HMS Surprise. Click!

Hope that helps and good luck! :pir-sweet:

That is what i want my stern to look like, but it does not show what hinges he used so slant the windows. The rest gave me a good idea and im going to get to work

Glad that you like it :pir-classic: The pictures of the stern are indeed not very clear.

I'd say: try to make something by yourself first (as you will learn the most in that way) and if you really don't know how to do it, I can always make better pictures for you.

Good luck!

Thanks! I will look at the index, and If i dont find any ideas I will ask Admiral Croissant for more pics of Le Vesta's stern.

But.... I can't really use The build a frigate because I don't have all the parts, and Can't order off the internet because my dad

says so :pir-angry:

The title of this topic sounds like you want us to be harsh when we give you advice. :pir_laugh2: (STERN help) Hahaha...ahem..hrm...

That's a neat pic, it should be quite helpful to me at least. The ship pictured is the HMS Bounty, correct?

si.

As well, zuloo's Granduer, CGH's Le Requiem, and Admiral croisant's La Vesta have very nice sterns. The stern on my Circumstance turned out really well too.

BTW, do you have any ships Hound Knight?

:pir_yoda:

Edit: The USS constitution has a rather nice stern too...

Sucess!!! after two hours of building my brains out I found a good technique to make a nice slanted stern. It blends nicely with the rest of the ship, and it looks quite a fair but like the HMS Surpise. I will get some pics on my brickshelf and post a WIP picture in the MOC category. Thank all of you for the help!!! :pir-cry_happy:

It suffers from "stern problems" in my opinion, and I've been planning new, better ship for some time now.

Meh, its better than the rochester's...

I can only wonder what you've been planning for the last 8 months...
