Mission Commander Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I know I've opened up a game topic before but this game can can not go on unnoticed! I just completed Metroid Prime 3 Corruption and wow. That game was fun! The way I see it is that Nintendo has 3 flagship series Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. These games helped shape me into the lego-loving gamer that I am today. I know I can't add a poll but can some one do it for me? Whats you favorite game? Do you like them side-scrolling or first person? Will the new system for the other M be successful? Also have fun and discuss here! Quote
MetroiD Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 What? An entire topic about me? Why thank you veeeery much! ...oh wait... Now for the real stunner - I have never played Metroid. Not one single game from the series. I used to have a poster (came along with my GameBoy) and I really loved the sound to that name, so I used it as my nickname and it sort of stuck. I never knew that a "metroid" was actually that brain-sucking creature which Samus Aran would end up befriending and which would help defeat some-boss-whose-name-I-don't-know in the end. In any case though, I still like the sound and I've been using this nickname for ages (15+ years), so I don't think I'll ever use any other alias, even though I'm not a huge Metroid fan. Now, Zelda, that's a different story. Good thing I didn't use that as a nickname though (or "Link", for that matter). I love the series and have decided to catch up on all those games I've missed (I'd only played Link's Awakening on GameBoy, but I'm now roaming temples in "Ocarina of Time"). Mario, well, Mario is legend. Nuff said. :) Your definition of Nintendo's top 3 games is spot on. Every now and then, out comes a game that is so unique you just know that's why you love Nintendo so much ;) Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Mission Commander, I think this topic could be nicely expanded into a Nintendo Flagship Series discussion, don't you? Since you would like 'what's your favorite game' in your poll, I am going to change your topic title to reflect all three games, if that's alright with you. Quote
Zorbas Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 What? An entire topic about me? Why thank you veeeery much! ...oh wait... I just had to comment-laugh! Btw, it's not just a topic, it's a whole franchise that's based on you! You're the man Bobby! My goodness, my post looks like an off-topic spam... Quote
Oky Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 What about Sonic?! I know, the recent games kinda sucked, but still. Anyway, Corruption was the only Metroid game I played, and I enjoyed it, even though I never finished it. I'm usually not a fan of first-person, but the way you looked around by aiming the Wii-mote was pretty cool and well done. Graphics were some of the best on the Wii as well. Out of the three/four, my favorite would have to be Mario. I have only played the Wii games, but I can already tell this is my favorite. I love platforming games, so the New Super Mario Bros is instant win for me, and Mario Party 8 is the best party game I've ever played (next to Smash of course). Besides, you just gotta love the stereotypical voicing. Mario ON! Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Hello, I changed the topic title so that this is now clearly the Nintendo Flagship Series discussion it's turning out to be anyway. I've also added a poll, and if enough people think something like Sonic should be on there, I could add it. Oky, wasn't Sonic first created by Sega anyway? Sega wasn't Nintendo, was it? Maybe I'm just confused, but would Sonic count as a Nintendo series? Out of the three mentioned in the first post, I'd have to pick Mario, since it's the only one I've ever really played. The only Mario that I thought was pretty bad was the 64 one, but the newer DS and Wii ones have been much much better in the classic style. I love Nintendo's update of the side-scrolling style, by making it side-scrolling while still very shiny and 3-Dish. So that answers the second question, I like side-scrolling. Would Kirby count as a Nintendo series? There are certainly a bunch of Kirby games, though not as many as the others I suppose, and I love the idea of the little pink guy. Kirby games are some of my favorite, since sucking up powers never gets old. To be honest, I'd never even heard of or seen Metroid, I don't think. Quite odd, if it's one of the biggest series. Quote
MetroiD Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Maybe I'm just confused, but would Sonic count as a Nintendo series? Absolutely. Sonic is definitely NOT Nintendo. Mario for Nintendo, Sonic for SEGA, that was the division back in the day. To be honest, I'd never even heard of or seen Metroid, I don't think. Heeellooooooo? (sorry, but I just can't resist it ) @ Zorbas: Laugh all you want buddy, fact is - I'm friggin famous!!! Quote
prateek Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I like Mario, but I suck at it. I can only go up to level 5 on any Mario game. Quote
RileyC Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) What about Pokemon? I love Pokemon just because you can keep on playing and playing until you either lose it or a new Pokemon game comes out. I would love if Nintendo re-released all of these on one game for DS or even maybe sell them on the App Store like Sega has. I like Mario but only the original ones and the latest ones. Some of the games have been pretty bad but The latest one had a good mix of old school side-scrolling and the 3D elements in the game. I would like them to try a little big planet type world where its great side-scrolling but you have the 3D element of being able to move forward and back as well. JimBee Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 It was a hard choice between Mario and Zelda. Mario's been part of my whole life, starting with great games like Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, and now the two newest renditions of the original Super Mario Bros. However, lately I am enjoying Zelda games. After playing a good majority of them, I'd say that Wind Waker is still my favorite, with Ocarina of Time as a close second. The puzzles, the open exploration, and the epic battles just outclass the goofiness and straight-up action of Mario for me. So, Zelda was my choice. I've hardly even played any Metriod games, but I do like the side-scrollers a lot better than the FPS ones (is the second poll question directed at this?). There are plenty of other flagship series for Nintento (StarFox, Kirby, Pokemon), but I agree that these are the three biggest. The Super Smash Bros. is a nice combination of all of these series, or at least the characters in them. What about Sonic?! I know, the recent games kinda sucked, but still. That would be Sega. Quote
def Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I modified the poll just a bit, and added 3rd person. Technically, the Mario Galaxy and home system Zelda games are not 1st person or side scrollers. I didn't bother adding overhead, since it's not on any home systems anymore Maybe I'll have to go with Zelda. I love the main Mario games, but they are really pick up and play. I have about 75 stars in Galaxy, and no need to keep going. Some of the later stars suck, racing games and the such. Metroid Prime is amazing though. I finished the first (on the Wii re-release) and it blew me away. Metroid 3, I only half finished it, the bosses drove me crazy, but a real sense of accomplishment there. I adjusted to 1st person gameplay, but don't love it. Zelda gets the best of both worlds; Mario style gameplay, with the Metroid quality of slowly powering up. If you do one temple in Zelda, you will do them all. The first Metroid is recommended though. In Japan, the re-release is half the price of a regular Wii game, but maybe you have to get the box set in the West. But it's worth it Sonic and Sega though, Sega have totally mismanaged its legacy, and Sonic is a great franchise in the past tense. Quote
Zorbas Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 @ Zorbas: Laugh all you want buddy, fact is - I'm friggin famous!!! (Drumroll...) My real name is Mario. Who's friggin' famous now??? Don't you just looove those kind of coincidences? Quote

Zorbas Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Can I convince anyone my real name is Elvis? Hail to the King! I know that it's not the most common greek name you can find but it is indeed my real name. (I was a SEGA guy back in the '90s btw. Sonic! ) Quote

Peppermint_M Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Guys!! Topic derailment much? (and Fellows too, shame on you). Lets see. I have played some Metroid and Samus is my character of choice in Smash Bro's (I love being all ninja in zero suit mode in Brawl). I like Legend if Zelda and doodle characters when I am bored. I have played it a little and my friend adores the DS games, so I play download play with her. Mario is Mario, I played a few of them. As for pokemans? I have played all but Gold/Silver (soon to be solved) and love to play it. I am a sure collector and I like training. Quote
Zorbas Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Guys!! Topic derailment much? (and Fellows too, shame on you). Sorry for that Peppermint. It was my fault that the whole thing went off topic and the blame is all on me. Derailment OFF. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I really should find a good emoticon to use to imply amusement/slight reprimand. It's not the person who started a tangent but those who continue it... *hard stare in certain members direction* Here is a pertinent question for Zelda fans. Do you like the oldest ones, the mid aged N64 + games and the cel shaded toon ones? Or just one? My friend loves the DS games and I was thinking of finding out if she had a Wii so I could buy her Windwaker and a gamecube controller or just get a gamecube for her to play it on. Is there a good version of Metroid I can play on my DS? I am stuck in my ways game wise and find it hard to branch out after a few mistakes in choices. Quote
MetroiD Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Guys!! Topic derailment much? (and Fellows too, shame on you). Ouch! Okay, okay, you can stop staring, the namecalling fun ends here and we're back to discussing games in all seriousness... As a direct response to your question - I've tried out quite a few of the Zeldas by now (haven't really played them through, just started them). I don't mind the toon graphics, not even a bit, even though at times they might look too childish. It's the gameplay that's decisive for me and there's hardly any console game that comes close to Zelda in that aspect. Mario is a nice way to kill half an hour or so, but gets boring extremely quickly, at least for me. That leaves us with Metroid, which as I've already mentioned I have insufficient experience with. And perhaps Castlevania, which I genuinely hated on the GameBoy. I seem to recall from my gaming years that Metroid Prime: Hunters was for DS...? You could give that a try. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Mario is a nice way to kill half an hour or so, but gets boring extremely quickly, at least for me. I very much agree with you about this, to a certain degree. Depending on how long it's been since I've played Mario last, it certainly can be boring or not boring at all if it's been a long time. Also, sometimes in certain Mario games it comes up that one jump that's hard to make but I know I can do it, so I get addicted until I've finally beaten the level. On the other hand, there are times that something comes up and I die so many times that I get frustrated instead and quit. Still, with the huge variety of Mario games, it is hard to get bored depending on which one you're playing. And that's one thing I really love about Mario, that there are many different versions with different powers and different elements of gameplay. Quote
def Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Here is a pertinent question for Zelda fans. Do you like the oldest ones, the mid aged N64 + games and the cel shaded toon ones? Or just one? My friend loves the DS games and I was thinking of finding out if she had a Wii so I could buy her Windwaker and a gamecube controller or just get a gamecube for her to play it on. I've been all over Zelda recently I just finished the SNES one WiiWare, and did the Wind Waker before that. Now, I'm three hours into Twilight Princess. They're all playable, but I think I like the handling on Wind Waker best. I love Twilight Princess, but the game feels a bit too Next Gen when it starts out (high res, but the character doesn't always feel in the world). Wind Waker really provides a coherent world. The N64 Ocarina is a flawless game. Any of the series is going to be worth playing, since the game play is so well done, though I have a hard time to enjoy the NES original now. Quote
VBBN Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Metroid isn't bad, though I do find it to be inferior to Bionicle Heros(DS, same console) as it had the same controls, but had far more enemies, better weapons, at least 20 times the amount of maps, more entertaining boss fights, etc. Mario is okay, and I dont care at all for Zelda. I'm more of a Halo, NFS, CoD, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, etc. kinda guy. Quote
prateek Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 As for pokemans? I have played all but Gold/Silver (soon to be solved) and love to play it. I am a sure collector and I like training. Old Gold/Silver for GB Colour? Those were the best ones besides Yellow, although my Silver cartridge doesn't save my progress. Quote
