no_skill Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I've been bitten by the minifig customization bug lately. Unfortunately, I find myself now wanting to branch out into MODs I just don't have the on-hand stock to create. I want to make a small squad of about 12 customs for which I have nothing, no base materials or accessories. Crunching the cost of acquisition (via my local retailer, Bricklink, BrickArms, etc.) the little guys are going to set me back about $6.50 US each. Is that a little, a lot, or just about right for making your own custom? What do you folks with the deep experience spend per minifig on a project (if you dare crunch the numbers that way)? Thanks in advance! Quote
polarbomber Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 $6.50 is good price try and buy from 1 bricklink shop , saves on postage costs brickarms dealer in australia , possible be cheaper shipping than a european dealer good luck and post pics of your figs Quote
NewRight Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 $6.50 sounds about right to me. Are you also balancing in any materials you'll need or already have? To me a blank/official minifig is worth about $4.00 tops. Meaning when I go shopping on BrickLink for minifigures I don't like to pay much more than $4.00. Anymore than that and I'll just buy the parts I need. So lets say about $4ish dollars for each plain minifigure you want to customize and then an average of $2.50 for material? That sounds pretty fair to me. Looking forward to seeing your 12 customs. Quote
The Penguin Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I'd say that it really depends on the fig you're going to make. ) Say, Batman customs are usually very expensive due to unbelievable prices on BL. (Luckily I have bought tonns ofthem before the prices skyrocketed). If you use extra materials and assesories that may add $2-3 as well. However I think that $6.50 is a good price and definitely worth it. ) Good day, ladies and gentlemen! ) Quote
no_skill Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 Thanks everyone for your input. I've decided to go ahead with the project. It's nothing too fancy, really. That's what surprised me about a 12 man squad costing around $80 US! It's given me a new appreciation for the investment it takes to create something just the way one wants it....especially those folks that create massive custom armies and so forth. Wow, it's quite shocking! The base figs are setting me back a relatively standard $2.75 each. I'm surprised how expensive certain heads are and really surprised how much hands go for (aside from standard yellow)! Starting from scratch is a killer. It was much easier (on the pocket book) just MODing with stock on hand, maybe with just a tweek here and there from Bricklink. I'll give a few pics when I'm done! Quote
Bobskink Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Just buy 2 a LGM every month, that way you won't feel your money lipping trough your hand. And after the summer, you will have a nice army. Quote

That's exactly what I have decided to do. (Especially because I just dropped my disposable income into an advanced SCUBA course & a new set of fins.) First round of LGM already acquired! Quote
