Holodoc Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 One birthday present I have made my own: A new uniform! The last one was handpainted and from the original series "Voyager": Now I wanted to advance to the next level, just like my archetype did in the series: With "Star Trek - First Contact" new uniforms were introduced and I planned to give my avatar this cool new look. Making a paint job is one thing, but as you can see from the image above, it's not sharp enough. So I decided to do it with decals. I bought a decal sheet almost one year ago when I was on vacation in Munich, but from that time on I lacked time to proceed further. Around my birthday I had some extra time to spend on creating the graphics first. I made a wrong first step in creating decals with a pixel based graphics suite. Big mistake. Then I realized I would be a lot easier if I did it vector based in Corel Draw. The result was stunning! Sharp, scalable design. I was impressed... ...until I printed the whole thing on the decal sheet: As you can see to the right, the recommended printer options were awful. I printed a second time (thinking my ink wasn't working properly), the result was the same (middle). I tried it with other settings and that idea was a good one (to the left). Cutting the decals with a new bought tweezers-scissors (is that a correct word? - I translated litteraly ) Fixing the ink with a fixative and then watering the decals: And now the most difficult part: Attaching the (tiny!) decals to the torso: I had to cut the shoulder parts though, they didn't want to stick to the arm. The "underground" is just too round to bear the decals. I first cut the decal part for that, but even then they didn't stick. So I took them off completely. Actually I love the design even without those parts. Here is the new Holodoc in all his beauty: Proud of wearing his new uniform. My BS folder with more pics. And finally I moved to another, more modern sickbay as well: Quote
prateek Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Nice decal! It's really clean on the body, and those cuffs are nice too. BTW, what happened to Doc's face? It looks different now. Quote

Zorro Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 All this to avoid a beating into the Whack-a-fig-II contest ay . Just joking, your updated version looks very good, better and more representant then your original one (although I liked that one too) . Quote
LuxorV Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Great job Holodoc! I really like the new look And welcome into the great world of vectorial designers as well. It may seem difficult to handle at the beginning, but you soon dicover that the advantages are many Btw, did you print it directly from the Corel file, or did you export it into another format? And if you exported it, which resolution did you use (I normally export into .png at 600 dpi)? LuxorV Quote

Is there any advantage in exporting it? Quote
LuxorV Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Thank you. For the new tag as well. You're welcome! It's always nice to see new customisers here I printed directly from the CD file. Is there any advantage in exporting it? Only if you want to use it in other non-vectorial programs or post it on the web LuxorV Quote
WhiteFang Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Doc, that's a great sharing session. It's nice of you to share the Holodoc's evolution, by seeing the process of your new outfit transformation. I am not a customiser expert or having real experience to mess with such area, but seeing what you have done and the things you have gone through, especially those pointers, can be real helpful for novice people like myself to watch out. It may not apply to everyone, but at least it's an experience that we all can learn from. Once again, the Holodoc's sigfig is still unique to your collection, but as long someone has the source of your decal, I am sure we are likely to see copies of your torsos in the near future, and of course without including your very own unique headpiece.
