Veteran Gresh

closeup.jpg_thumb.jpgside.jpg_thumb.jpgback.jpg_thumb.jpg

I made this MOC a while ago, but I've only recently completed it after I bought the new 2010 Gresh. It's meant to be a depiction of Gresh after he replaced his armour, in a way that looked like an upgrade of his original set, rather than his quite different (and smaller) look of the 2010 Gresh.

I feel I slacked off on the arms, but otherwise I'm very satisfied with how it turned out. :classic:

You did a great job integrating the masks into the thighs. I could learn something there. Neat use of parts between shoulders and neck too.

The shin design looks interesting, but I think you should have made built-up larger feet. Also double connections and/or pistons would make the moc more stable. Although I don't know the weight etc. of the moc, I have a feeling it would not be that stable.

Overall it looks nice, but the feet....

Proportions are a bit off-- the body seems too long for the legs. And IMO this MOC is waaaay too exposed and pieced-together looking, making even the most brilliant Technic strategies look awkward. The main problem is that it looks more Technic than BIONICLE, and not in a good way.

Some of the techniques are very clever-- I like the armor made from McToran arms, as well as the claws made from his new armor pieces and the brilliant bow made from his blades. Other techniques are not nearly as effective-- the thigh armor makes it look like his "knees" are somewhere on his thighs rather than where the actual joint is, stylistic inconsistency abounds on the lower legs, and the back looks rather empty aside from that out-of-place-looking piece of Nuva armor.

Overall, this MOC works with some nice concepts, but they need to be put together more effectively and in the right combinations for them to actually work. As it is, the MOC is not very impressive, despite the hard work that clearly went into its better areas.

One thing I really like is the idea of making a titan or large set of a 12.99 set.

That idea I've been having for a while, but I think I might not start with Gresh, as I actually have though about.

I like the mask Gresh have very much, It was designed by Christoff (his first Bionicle mask) and engineered by me :-)

Technically, the Toa Mata Nui set pretty much was just that.

Gresh's mask is pretty awesome. I was kind of skeptical about whether it would be quite so cool on the 2010 Gresh, since it was just plain lime rather than a blend, but it turned out pretty epic.

It's surprisingly stable, although probably from using ball and socket pieces that haven't worn down from use. I'll try using your suggestion for the feet, but I prefer not to use pistons and double joints unless they're absolutely necessary for bigger MOCs.

Thanks for the all in-depth feedback. I disagree about the Nuva armour, because it along with the Mistika claws and Mctoran arms give the torso quite a nice round shape. It's my fault though, I can see that none of the photos actually show that. Otherwise, I'll try taking your thoughts into account when I get time to remake him.

Front - The Gresh mask is indeed fantastic. Although I find that the blended version (and blades) give much more character, the lime version is surprisingly nice as well. It's just a shame that it limits the head articulation on the 2010 Gresh, but I doubt Christoff knew it would be needed for that purpose when he made it.

It is very custom but the proportions are awkward all in all it is a good MOC

While the torso is very good looking, albeit a little too long, the upper arms ruin this for me. They are very messy looking and gappy. I think that the grey Visorak body pieces really ruin any flow that the arms have. The lower legs are also a tad messy.

However, I really like the torso, especially how you did the sides. Nice work with that.
