Jargo Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Priest. It was ok for killing some time but by no means brilliant. Very derivative and highly predictable. Lots of style and no substance. Quote
Sisco Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 I went and saw Super 8 last night. It was alright, but it was just what I was expecting. No plot twists for me, really. What I was really disappointed with was the story. The alien/monster was okay, but what the Hell? Where did he come from? What are those little white cubes that are so hyped up? I know he used them to "rebuild his ship", but still. Why's the government so afraid of this thing? Ugh. Too many open questions. Honestly, my favorite part was the little film the kids made in the credits. It was so cute and funny, with the late 70's effects and cheesy acting. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I saw X-Men First Class today. It was amazing. As someone who's read X-Men comics for 25 years, this had so much stuff the last movies were missing, even X2, which is considered the best X-Men movie... til now. Magneto owns this flick. By the end of the movie, you know why Magneto hates humans. The female roles were a little underperformed/underwritten, but the movie is really about Magneto and Professor X, so most of the other male roles are underwritten too. But the movie captures a lot of the wonder and hatred from the comics. When people see their powers, they are amazed and terrified. I saw the other major comic movie so far this year, Thor, too. X-Men is much better. The film has a lot of weight to it. Thor was pretty breezy. Just saw it yesterday and I agree, it has a lot more 'substance' and depth compared to the other X-Men movies, and I really like the way they presented the backstories of Charles and Magneto. I was actually not excited to see this one but still gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did as this kinda reminds me of how Nolan turned around the Batman movie franchise from the awful 90s Batman flicks. Mr Man Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Just saw it yesterday. Not wanting you to go into spoilers but how well does it line up with the others? Does it preserve continuity? Quote
Captain Becker Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Horror Express (1972) Fantastic horror film! I cant say no more, almoust couldnt sleep last night. Captain Becker Quote
Zeya Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 This weekend I saw: Due Date - This movie was terrible. It had a really bad script and direction basically. They managed to waste Robert Downey Jr. It's Kind of a Funny Story - This one was pretty good. Some of their attempts at Wes Anderson-esque scenes fell flat, but there wasn't too much of that. I have a penchant for stories that take place in psych wards. Both movies had Zach Galifinakis. He's okay as an actor for the most part, but his standup is hilarious. Quote
Artanis I Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Yet again we did a movie marathon for the long weekend. This time we were too stuffed to watch 4 movies so we just did 3: Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus - rubbish, as expected, so bad it's hilarious. Surprised to see Robert Picardo from Star Trek & Stargate. Predators - seen it before, actually quite good. Fairly similar vibe to Predator but without the 80s cheese. Music reminded me of Alien movies. Book Of Eli - pretty much Fallout 3 ... interesting revelation at the end. Gotta watch it again, now. I hate Gary Oldman. Except when he's Commissioner Gordon. Quote
def Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Not wanting you to go into spoilers but how well does it line up with the others? Does it preserve continuity? It's not great with continuity, with the comics or the first movies, but it's a lot closer to the set up of the films. Stuff different from comic continuity: Banshee is very young, Havok is an X-Man before Scott, Mystique is a childhood friend of Prof. X, the White Queen has no personality, Riptide and Azrael work for the Hellfire Club Quote
CDC Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Paul. Not a fan of Pegg and/or Frost but this movie was fun. Quote
Gregorovich Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom last night. I've seen ot at least 30 times (my brother is obsessed with it), but I still enjoy it. Even though it's pretty fake, it's fun to see. It makes me wish we got more Temple of Doom sets in the Indiana Jones LEGO theme, though . Mega Shark Vs Crocosaurus - rubbish, as expected, so bad it's hilarious. Surprised to see Robert Picardo from Star Trek & Stargate. I've never heard of that, but I have seen Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (I'm guessing they're very similar). When I watched it, I kept wondering if it was an actual film it was that terrible. We just couldn't stop laughing at the shockingly bad acting and the shark and octopus. So, it was either an extremely disastrous action film, or a very successful comedy . Quote

Except when he's Commissioner Gordon. I haven't seen that one yet. My girlfriend told me about the ending, which I kind of guessed what it was anyway. Still want to see it though. If you want to see what I imagine is a similar movie, check out The Road. It isn't a perfect movie, but it's got that post-apocalyptic danger thing going on and I liked it alright. Quote

When I watched it, I kept wondering if it was an actual film it was that terrible. We just couldn't stop laughing at the shockingly bad acting and the shark and octopus. So, it was either an extremely disastrous action film, or a very successful comedy . Anything made by The Asylum is chock full of bad acting, terrible CGI & props, reused footage and sets. Half the movies are Godzilla themed (like those two movies) the other half are hack cash-ins on recent blockbusters eg Transmorphers, 100 Million BC, Alien Vs Hunter etc. We start each movie marathon with one of those, they often have extremely bad dialogue which brings good laughs... and the accidental kick-in-the-head of the girl who'd just died was hilarious. (During a very serious emotional scene of course!) I haven't seen that one yet. My girlfriend told me about the ending, which I kind of guessed what it was anyway. Still want to see it though. Peppermint_M Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I watched Green Lantern. Although I still dislike the costume direction (it is still better than bat-nipple suit though) I really rather enjoyed it. I went in worrying that a character that until now only I really knew or liked (amongst my non geek friends that is) would be somewhat spoiled by a naff film for years to come (I'm looking at you, non Burton Batman Films, and Catwoman) it was good. They got the character right-ish it looked great visually. Now, with the possible success of the mo-cap costume, does this mean we get a Flash film? I want the fastest man alive to be running across cinema screens soon! Quote
Jargo Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Paul. I found it quite dull and over long. weakcharacterisation and performances lacking in energy. Almost as though Pegg and Frost were literally taking a vacation. Sigourney Weaver was wasted and in the little screen time she had it felt like she hadn't read the script and just wandered onto the set in between doing something else more important. There were one or two laughs to be had but it's a very disappointing movie. Plus the fawning at Spielberg's feet is slightly nausea inducing. Quote
Dazmundo Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 As I type this I am sat watching 21 on DVD. Good film based on truth D Quote

I watched it last night with a group of friends and I enjoyed it as well, however I don't know about the Lantern universe or and superhero universes really. My friends however were outraged by the things they have missed! Especially how Sinestro didn't use the yellow ring . We ended up agreeing that there should be a sequel. Quote

I hope you stuck around for the mid credits bonus scene then! (We did, it was awesome. I mean really Awesome. That one moment made up for all the ick of the costume design) Quote

Zeya Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I watched the first 3 parts of Ken Burns's "Civil War". It's like a 7 hour documentary about the American civil war. My dad made me watch it when I was a kid, and maybe not quite old enough to appreciate it, so I started it again for father's day (a holiday here in the US, not sure about the rest of the world). Excellent stuff. If you haven't seen a Ken Burns documentary, they're really a cut above your average "history cable/satellite channel" documentary. I would also recommend Ken Burns's treatment of WWII in 2007 with "The War". Everyone should watch that. Quote
Gregorovich Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I watched Changeling when it was on the telly on Thursday. I went to see it when it came out in the pictures a few years ago. Now, I'm not one to get all emotional at films. However, there is a few exceptions, and this is one of them. The acting is very good IMO, and the story was very captivating. It's very sad yet disturbing, and the fact that it's a true story makes it that bit more creepy. Despite the fact that it makes me feel quite upset, I really enjoy it. I'd recommend it to those who enjoy emotional films, horror films and mystery films! Quote

Gregorovich Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 127 Hours. Excellent film, you can really feel the hopelessness of the whole situation. I don't want to ruin the plot, so I'll just say there's a pretty gruesome scene that some people may find distressing. It's a great film otherwise, though. Quote
