TrumpetKing Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I finally saw Iron Man 3 today. I really enjoyed it! It's been a while since I've been so impressed with a movie! It looked good, but was even better than it looked, IMO. The only problem was that it was an itty bit predictable to me. I'd give it a 9.8/10. One question though. Why was the president arrested at the end? That confused me. Also, I nearly started laughing outrageously when I found out that Mandarin was just an actor. Quote

It's the Vice President seen getting arrested at the end, and that is because he was alined with Killian/The Mandarin to help his granddaughter get some extremis to heal her leg. Praiter Yed Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 I watched the director's cut of Leon (aka The Professional) last night. Haven't watched this film in years and it was the first time I'd seen this version, imo it was a lot better than the theatrical cut (which is already a great film). Quote
gryffindorcommonroom Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Fifth Element - for the 1000th time. I can't express my feelings of love and joy for that movie. Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Pacific Rim! An amazingly fun and entertaining film -- go see it! Quote
Peppermint_M Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Indeed. Giant robots, what is not to like, though it is hard to trust the computer in Gypsy Danger.... "Would you like to try again?" (A note to all. the M in my username began life as Mecha...) Quote
Leo604 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Not a movie but in the last 2 days I watched all of Season 4 of The Office again. The part where Michael drives the car into the lake is probably my favourite moment. Quote
just2good Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Your movie theater must love you! The number of new movie reviews you have is remarkable (but much appreciated!). Haha! I do see a whole lot of movies... I've been going to different theaters recently, using Groupon deals. There's just so many interesting films out! I might see Turbo next week, 'cause I love animated movies. Quote
dr_spock Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Pacific Rim. Mechs battling monsters and no kissing scenes. Quote

I meant the Vice President. After doing a little further research, I think that sounds about right. I wish it was made a little more clear in the movie. Quote
RaincloudDustbin Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I Give it a Year- Incredibly funny at times but rather hit and miss. Nowhere near as good as 500 Days of Summer which I'd compare it to. 3/5 Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Despicable Me 2 (for the third time)- good, funny movie. Very cute. I'd say its my fav animated film. R.I.P.D- Really liked how with this one looked, seeing the actual movie...........eh. The rest of my family hated it, I thought it was okay. Lots of plot holes and it couldn't decide if it was a comedy or an action film. World War Z- Great film. It was really suspenseful (and I was seeing these movies at a drive-in so it was 1:30 when the movie started.) Unfortunately, I didn't get the end because it started raining. Might see it again. CM4Sci Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Third time? lol I just finished watching the entire Back to the Future Trilogy for the first time. Yes, first time. Don't hate me! All films were awesome, really funny, and in total just amazing! 2015 is a year and a half away, why don't we have flying cars and Mattel hoverboards yet? I want one! -Sci Quote
pluto7443 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Just saw Pacific Rim and Man of Steel this past weekend. Quote

I am to re-watch them with my girlfriend for a while now. Well, if we can't have real ones, there is always Lego xD Last movie I saw was Everything is Illuminated with Elijah Wood. Great movie! Quote
SteampunkDoc Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) Pacific Rim Go and see this now. It's fantastic. OK, so this is one amazing movie, and the first ten minutes are not only visually stunning, but set the tone and backstory for the rest of the movie. So yes, you'll be sucked right in, and stay hooked until the very end. I have a few teeny-tiny issues, but they didn't really hit me until after the credits started running, and the rest of the movie more than makes up for them. Now, the movie throws you into things, with the first few years of the war summed up in a few minutes. I feel this is a good idea, since we get more story on it throughout the film, and it allows any sequels to easily add in ideas or events without messing with the timeline. It also gets right into the one thing that I went to see, the fight scenes. There's a nice action-y intro, and then the titles, and a five-year (Or so) jump, although that gap isn't made that clear until later. The rest of the review will be spoiler-y, but trust me, it's well worth the time and money. I was sitting in the back by the door, but hardly noticed the people going in and out. It was just me, the monsters, and the mechs. So, cons first. Let's get them out of the way. First, The Walls of Life. Stupid, stupid idea...In-universe at least. Just how insane are those guys? The Walls are easily broken, and just as easily walked around. The Jaegers worked fairly well, and it wasn't until you started spending your time and money on the walls that they (Jaegers) began to fail. And seriously, the Kaiju are coming more and more quickly, but you neglect the one defense that worked? Anyway, the sheer stupidity of this didn't hit for a while, and it's not that big of a deal since in the end the Jaegers more than proved their worth. Second, the little screen time of the Chinese and Russian Jaegers. They were cool designs, but were offed a bit too easily. Especially for the one defending the Russian coast for six years, and the other defending China seven times. Third, the Kaiju's EMP. Yes, it was the easiest way to temporarily shut down Striker, but not render any permanent damage. It seemed just a tad too convenient, but it's a tiny issue at best. Fourth, The tiniest of the all. I called the third Kaiju hiding just inside the rift long before the movie revealed it. But maybe that's because I'm just super-smart. Now on the the much abbreviated pros. First, the amazing fight sequences. There're all great, and done in such a way as to now get old and repetitive. The overall designs were also creative, and just plain cool. All the jaegers had their own unique look, and the Kaiju were nicely alien while still evoking features of Earth animals. I've not seen much mecha or Godzilla like media, but I find it hard to believe that any could be better than this. The variety of weapons used was another plus. I liked the fact that several different weapons and strategies were used. This kept things from being repetitive, as well as gave you something new to look forward to in each new battle. Also, baby Kaiju, brilliant idea. The plot actually made sense, and while it wasn't anything super-deep, it was solid enough to not present any major plot-holes. It also held up the film, and kept it from being a mind-less 'blow 'em up' blockbuster. It gave viewers a lot to think about, but the few glimpses of society seemed to clash with the apocalyptic nature of the film. (Most buildings still up, little coastal damage, Ect.) There were some nice developments, and while the death of most of the pilots, as well as the destruction of all of the Jaegers, leaves humanity in a venerable position should the aliens re-make the rift, that would give an interesting twist to things. It sums up it's story well, and could easily sand on it's own, but it also leaves things open for a sequel. (Without swinging the whole other way and outright setting one up.) Overall it was great fun, and does a great job at entertaining. So go watch it...now. Can't see why this ain't dominating the box-office. It should be. Edited July 21, 2013 by SteampunkDoc Quote
Lord Rahl of Clannad Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I haven't seen a film in almost a month now. The last one I did see was Man of Steel. And I was certainly very impressed with it. It's up there with the best superhero films I have seen so far. Quote

Leo604 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Finally watched The Amazing Spiderman - I was very disappointed and a little bored. I'm guessing you like the Sam Raimi ones better? Quote
Praiter Yed Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I'm guessing you like the Sam Raimi ones better? I do - apart from Spiderman III, obviously . But I didn't watch it with that kind of "I like the originals so I'm not going to like this!" attitude - I really wanted to enjoy it. There were a lot of things I liked about it, the fact they closed up on some 'iconic' Spidey poses and the 'swinging through the city at night' scenes where (perhaps) better than the Raimi ones (been a while though). Apart from the boredom It's difficult to say why I was disappointed, but It didn't really draw me in emotionally - I didn't even care when Uncle Ben died. I bought the dvd so I'll no doubt watch it with the kids at some point - maybe I'll enjoy it more the second time around. Quote

The effects and swinging were definitely better, but that's probably a given considering the movies are pretty far apart of when they were made. I sort of preferred ASM over the older ones maybe because I thought it was a better and (maybe) more meaningful story having a high school student take on the burden of protecting a city as opposed to an adult who has already had some experience with taking care of himself and others. Green Goblin and Doc Ock were much better villains, though; the Lizard just seemed really one-dimensional and the conflicts weren't as interesting in terms of motive and the actual fighting scenes. Hopefully the sequel will be better. Quote
Praiter Yed Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Yes, The Lizard's character and motive were lacking. I thought Tobey Maguire was supposed to be a high-school student in the first film though? Although I have to admit I'm always confused about the U.S. school system (especially when you see 'kids' driving cars and 'doing it' in films like KickAss). Quote

He was, but I think after the Uncle Ben shooting and the GG transformation he graduated and then the rest of the trilogy was all 'I have no job and can't get to college on time'. Quote

I loved it. Depp and Hammer are great together. Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Saw The Wolverine over the weekend!! I'd place it as my third favorite X-Men film, behind First Class and X2. Very well done, though, and made me wish we had some more X-Men sets. Quote
