tbts77 Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Hi, I am wondering in general if such a thing as alternative instructions for Lego sets exist? And my specific question is if anyone knows where I can find alternative instructions for set 5582 Ultimate Town Building Set? Thanks, Petra Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 G'day 'tbts77' to answer your first question, you can find in places like brickfactory plans for different set ideas from of course simply named 'idea books' ! Now your second question, I see what you might want to make like the castle or farm, well I'm afraid it's all up to you to work only from the picture. Good luck and I'm a conformist! ! Quote

Thanks, Petra The Creator line of sets generally have three sets of instructions. Other than that there are generally none. In the past there were alternate models pictured on set boxes, but this is no longer the case as Lego found it led to too many requests for instructions which didn't exist. Since the set you asked about contains mostly generic bricks you might find inpiration from the thousands of older instruction scans on Peeron (http://www.peeron.com/scans/). Peter Quote
tbts77 Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 thanks for the replies. an internet search reveals plenty of images of supplied instructions. it would be really great to have access to complete alternate instructions for specific sets. is there a reason why such things don't exist? the LDD could and should have more set filters (I have seen no way of updating or importing them). then instructions created and filtered by set from within LDD with a pdf output would open up a whole new world of building opportunities for many people. this way YOC becomes MOC just a thought Quote
peterab Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 it would be really great to have access to complete alternate instructions for specific sets.is there a reason why such things don't exist? From the point of view of The LEGO Group designing new alternate builds and instructions for them are expensive and time consuming, and don't result in any extra sales, unlike designing a new set. I'm pretty sure the intention of this set is not to have kids follow instructions, but rather to encourage creative building, so having lots of alternative instructions would probably work against what many see as the greatest strength of lego. Eurobricks is a great place to come, the help and advice I have received here in the few weeks I have been a member have helped me loads and I am now trying to build my own creations. I guess I just trying to say have a go yourself and see what you come up with. Quote
