MOC: Hong Kong Police Van

Hi everyone, it seems everyone is making 5 wide vehicle these days, and here is my attempt. I like lego police car a lot, not in a sense that the original Lego one, but I do enjoying modifing or creating a police vehicle

The model was based on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, currently still use by Hong Kong Police thought they should retire in a couple of years. I am sure many of you will come across this van as well, becuase it is very common in Europe.

Due to the 5 wide body, only one sliding door can be constructed. HK is right-hand drive, (just like UK), I put the door on the left, so when the policemen leave the van, they should be on the pavement already

The hardest bit would be the front wind shield, because the sloped-like front cannot be done with conventional lego, so I did a bit of thinking outside the box......

I post this van on another forum several months ago, not everyone like it. Personally I really like the effect of the front wind shield.

Sliding door is cool! Just last night i was working on a monorail MOC and was trying to figure out how to make a door that slides. I had to pass on it because I failed to come up with an idea. Good work!

Very clever way of getting the door to slide open like that.

The 5 wide works well, but with 6 wide looking so good and being "more minifig sized" I still prefer the 6 wide vehicles.

I saw this on brickshelf a little while ago and I liked it straight away. I did suspect it had been inspired by my police van, which has now been confirmed. Nice to see that my designs are appreciated in Hong Kong. The way you integrated the front window is really clever. I can imagine that that must have taken a bit of fiddling.

In my opinion the width is just about perfect for a vehicle like this. I take minifig scale to be approximately 1/45 (scaled with the height of the figures). A real Mercedes Sprinter is 1.9m wide, which at 1/45 is very close to five studs.

I agree with everyone else, that only one thing stands out - the sliding door - EXCELLENT !

Good job designing 5 wide, but I agree with 'Big Cam' some vans need to be 6 wide if it's too carry more than one minifig.

Thanks, sliding door can indeed be a problem, I have design several. The easiest way is to use the black hinge,

but be aware they are very weak, i have lost several due to this mechanism, so I would personally move to a more mechanical approach

With regard to your 6 wide comment, I partially agree, but because this is based on a mini van, 5 wide would be more appropiate

Speaking of 6 wide, I had another HK police van out of 6 wide (which was built even earlier, IIRC 2008 Aug)

Thank you, your creation has both inspiried and improve my constructing skills. The version you saw several months earlier was the 1st version, it was very much based on your model. The current version has shorter wheelbase and more room inside

The front wind shield was definitely the hardest part, it was very much try and improvement. Initially it was very unstable, the windshield could easily come off, but now it is very secured, even when i shake the vehicle, the windshield wont come off.
