Hi,

I finished building 8258 and I am having some issues. I heard clicking noises from the base of the crane so I took it apart. (just the crane portion so I didn't disassemble any of gears)

Now that I put together everything, my crane spins CRAZY when the crane is setup for vertical movements. Does anyone have any idea? :(

Also, does this modification requires more parts than what 8258 comes with? (http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=403362)

Thanks.

[edit] I found the problem but can anyone confirm that link above as far as rather I need more parts or not? Thanks.

Another question I have is, when I try to lift/lower cranes, the base of the crane jerks/rotates a little bit. Has anyone experienced this?

I was going to suggest you may have left the 8 tooth gear out that meshes with the turntable, as that would allow it to rotate. Mine also tries to turn when operating the upper functions but that is just slop in the drive to the turntable. I have checked all axles are free to rotate but there is a lot of driveline to these functions and quite a bit of friction. I have minimised the movement by swapping the tan non friction pin with axle that the 24tooth gear is mounted on with a blue friction pin with axle, this does help to take some of the slop from this gear.

I think you may need more parts for those mods, I guess the moving of the 24tooth clutch gear you are mostly referring to, I am sure it needed a couple of thin liftarms that were not included.

Thank you. I thought so too. I tried to build it so that there's not much room to play when it operates. I guess it can't be helped. Thanks again!

I'm building mine right now and the extra parts required to do the Mods are realtively few and common (except maybe for the clutch gear). However, a few weeks bak I had the opportunity to see the model at a show (built by a firend of mine) and there were no problems with any of the functions.

(So then why do I do the Mods?... because I can! and they make sense)

well there aren't any problems. it's just that when parts are moving, I noticed instability(?) from the crane base. can you check and see if your crane base moves slightly when crane components are moving? thanks!

i don't have any spare parts. i just started playing around with lego :p

I just finished building the 8258 crane. I noticed some stray movements when I didn't disengage the transmission driving ring fully. Otherwise, it seems to be ok. The problem I have is the model is huge. I need a bigger display shelf.

Hm...mine is fully engaged and still rotates a little bit. So the crane properly functions when the transmission is fully engaged?

I was thinking that this might come from added tolerances from each part (play between parts add up causing this issue) but I may be wrong. I am just wondering if this is "known" issue with this model or technic model in general as far as gears and moving parts are concerned. Thank you for reply. :)

I've finished the model - for now (more mods coming) and can say that after some testing I have noticed what you mention (the base of the arm moving slightly, but only when the left yellow lever didn't fully disengage the driving ring.

I've modded the twin wheel mod and now have a second differential working...

alright thanks. i wish i can have extra parts to do some moding.

thanks again for coming back to leave a reply!

Well, when you get your next set you'll have extra parts

Have you built the secondary model yet?

haha, 8041 will be here tomorrow! i am very excited!

i don't think i will make the secondary model. i bought 8258 just for that crane. i am actually thinking of making this :http://www.designer-han.nl/lego/prinoth%20leitwolf.htm

based on bricklink price, etc., it will cost me just over $200.

i like big scale models, which is another reason why i dont want to make secondary model. front loader and lamborghini are backordered but i ordered them last friday. i am just not sure if it's worth buying snow groomer from LEGO since i am building the big model.

i will likely get additional parts for 8258 when i order other parts.

LEGO owns.

If you want a really simple MOD how about this:

you only need to swap some pins

done! thanks! haha

i want to add PF (lights) but it's not available at the store and i dont know how that thing works with transparent bricks. maybe i should search. :p

going to eat breakfast first though!

PF lights will require some redesign because the current lights are built on plates and there is no way to push the lights through those

But it is certainly an interesting option.
