Legorski Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I'm building a Brig at the moment, designing it primarily for speed. Cannons where placed both under and on deck, but for a speedier vessel I was thinking of only placing deck cannons, leaving all of the gunport for living quarters. Good/Bad idea? Quote
Jack Bricker Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I would put the cannons underneath the deck. It would look better and if you could have the crew quaters around the guns that would be really cool. I look forward to seeing pictures Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 That is correct, but then you have no brig anymore! Brigs were fast vessels with not too many guns. I think you should leave the lower decks for the crew. IF you go for a realistic model at least. On real Brigs those quarters were already partly under water level. If you need further help, do not hestitate to ask! Quote

Jack Bricker Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I guess I was thinking of the Interceptor from POTC. You should do what pleases you with your brig. If you want it to be the biggest badest brig out there than put the guns under the deck, but if you want the be more realistic have your guns above the deck only. P.S. have fun. Quote

Alex the Great Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Is this for the Jolly Roger Contest? I'm also trying to build a brig, yea I would say keep the cannons on the deck. Quote
Legorski Posted January 5, 2010 Author Posted January 5, 2010 Is this for the Jolly Roger Contest? I'm also trying to build a brig, yea I would say keep the cannons on the deck. Totally, got to build even if march is a long time away! ;o) Quote
Jack Bricker Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Well, I can't wait to see pictures. Good luck on your ship. I would probably stick to the sleeping quarters myself since I like ships to be realistic. Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 I'd say go the historically accurate guns on the top deck. This is how I did the guns on the top deck of my WIP frigate, design credit to Captain Green Hair: Quote
Legorski Posted January 5, 2010 Author Posted January 5, 2010 Awesome, seems like I'm doing deck guns for sure, The ship's going well, unfortunatly this week will be really busy, ( I hate School! ) I don't know if I'll be able to build! This is totally one of those moments. Quote
Legorski Posted January 6, 2010 Author Posted January 6, 2010 I got another question..... For the same vessel, should there be a cabin, or just a space partially higher for the steering wheel? The captain could have a room under deck, with navigation equipment and so on. So what-ca think? Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 For a realistic brig the last option is the most realistic, since brigs were mostly flat ships with no high cabin or forecastle. I also recommend to check out some model ships on the internet, or get your eyes into some ship books avaible in almost every library. It almost sounds like work, but the result will be there for sure once you know how ships are constructed, several types of ships and more. All the best with your Brig! Quote
martinsuper Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I am planning on building a replica of the Brig Niagara. Here are some pics. As you can see, the Cannonade is on the main deck. Hope this helps. -martinsuper Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I love those 68 pounders! Nice pictues, I'm sure this is something relevant to what Legorski has in mind. How is the build coming along Legorski? Any pictuers already? Quote

I don't think I'll get pics yet ....., as I got exams coming up, and I have projects galore. After Exams I'll be free for a while, so if it's not complete by them, I'll get some WIP pics ;o) Quote
Francis Dampierre Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Sounds awesome, brigs are my favorite kind of ship . If you're trying to be historically accurate, put the guns on the BOTTOM deck, because a top-heavy ship is REALLY bad, as the Dutch were unfortunate enough to discover. If your ship ends up in heavy swells and she's rocking and rolling, those guns will tip your ship over in a second. If you keep the guns low, it's the same as having a low center of gravity, which balances your ship. And yes, the crew can sleep between the guns quite comfortably. In terms of just having a cool looking ship, though, i like having them on the top deck where the world can see them. . Having them on the low deck looks cool too though, sticking out of the gunports. Up to you. Good luck! Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Very few brigs had lower gundecks, so it would in fact be more historically accurate to go with them on the top deck. Top heavy ships were indeed a problem, but not for a ship the size of a brig. You would have more problems with open gunports on a lower gundeck. Quote
Tordenskjold Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 On smaller ships like a brig the gundeck would be too low to use for cannons. water cold come in quite easily. just read the master and commander book by O'Brian. he wrote that the captains cabin was so low above the water that it couldnt hold cannons there because the gunport would be only 2 feet above the water. I would place the guns on the upper deck, Quarterdeck .. Quote
martinsuper Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 As everyone has said before, and as you can see from the pictures I posted; the reason the cannon needs to be on the top deck is because there is simply no other place to put them. The Niagara has so little hull above water where else could they go? -martinsuper Quote

Legorski Posted January 11, 2010 Author Posted January 11, 2010 Ohhhh... Seems Like the brig will be a Hermaphrodite Brigantine... All the puns in the world intended. Two sails make it look narly. Luckily there is such a thing as a Hermaphrodite Brigantine. Quote
Legorski Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 I fit in the time to get some WIP pics up, the ship is starting to shape up, 8D I decided to unconventionally lower the deck for the cannons, but it looks really cool in real life. XD Images are links to flickr Quote
Legokilt Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 I would go with guns on the deck for a brig. As one of the others said living quarters were mainly under water. As for the Interceptor from POTC, her real name is the Lady Washington and she is quite a lady. I have spent some time on her and she is a great ship. Another good ship to do (if a bit smaller) is the Sloop Providence. She was John Paul Jones' first command (as much as I dislike him). Lady Washington http://www.historicalseaport.org/web/lady-washington.html Providence http://www.hrmm.org/press/providence/photos.html Sorry if the link doesn't work, I am trying to figure out how to use them. Captain Blackmoor Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 That looks great already! A bit short for a brig perhaps concerning it's height, but I like the colours. Keep it up! Quote
