I've just bought some baseplates on eBay that I would like to remove some of the printed pattern from.

Is there any way of doing this without scratching or damaging the baseplates?

Brasso and a cloth

I think there are a lot of topics about removing printing from Lego in the Minifig Customisation Workshop that may help also.

That's pretty much it, or you can use rubbing alcohol.

Excellent, read that about smooth bricks but wasn't sure about road pieces

I can see where you could be hesitant, given the rougher texture of a baseplate compared to a tile or the side of a brick. I think if Brasso didn't work, I would try lightly sanding the flat area. I've never done it, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
