Milan Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) I guess, when you need to build a MOC, you need more specific parts than you have at the moment, and then it is time for BL. How do you order your parts (pieces for one MOC or pieces for more MOCs at once, or you just order approximate number of pieces?), and how much are you ready to spend on a single order? I always try to order for next 2 or more MOCs, to cut expenses, and my single order values are from 20 up to 120usd, most expensive order was about 300usd. Also I am trying to build very precise models in MlCad so I can know precise what parts I need, and then I order 10% more parts, just to be sure. How about you? I do not know if this should go to the B/S/T/F Forum? Edited December 10, 2009 by Milan Quote
TheAllSeeyingGuy Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I've spent about 50 euros on bricklink stuff. My first order was 211 black bricks. The other orders we're for purple parts, about 300 pieces, just got the last order today. The only things i still need to buy from bricklink are 269 purple bricks, which i can't find at the moment . Modulex Guy Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I spend way too much, thats all I know. To answer your other questions, yes I buy Extra bricks sometimes instead for just one MOC, because even if I know how many I need for a MOC, there is always a chance that I would need that same piece for another MOC. Its better to have a few more extra pieces on hand than to place more orders and wait. Quote
Carbohydrates Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I buy by the MOC. Extra parts I throw in include chrome silver pieces (can't have enough) and various mafia-esque things, like tommy guns, fedoras, and suit torsos. Quote
Maegnus Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I'm gonna join the "TOO MUCH" crowd on this one. My BL orders come in waves. At times I can go months without making an order, and at others I can spend $1000 in a month. Last summer I received a small package almost every day in the mail. When you work for the government, it's all too easy to spend your days placing order upon order on BL. In total, I've probably spent around $5000 on BL since joining two years ago... And I'm still a student! If I get married in the future, this will almost certainly become an issue Quote
lgorlando Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 This is a scarry topic It forces me to really see what I burned this year on spare parts I downloaded my BL orders recieved Year to date into an excel sheet and lets just say that I am not under budget. What I have tried to do to save on shipping is plan out core parts (tree parts, glass, 1 x 1's etc) and plan mulitple MOCs (ordering many parts from the same store) in order to save on shipping. I did further analysis on shipping cost per piece cost and some BL sellers have actually been robbing me. What I hate most is cost per lot that some sellers add to shipping. I added these guys to my least favorite store. Quote
CP5670 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 For generic types of pieces, I always buy more than I need. I don't necessary have a second MOC in mind, but if the pieces are basic, common ones then I know I'll need them somewhere sooner or later. When it comes to more specialized and expensive pieces like PF motors, I typically only buy as many as I need at a time, except when the piece/condition is rare and hard to come by. My BL orders tend to be either under $30 or over $100, with not much in between. For the big bulk orders, I stick to 4 or 5 specific sellers who I know have good prices across the board and handle big orders efficiently. I can spend as much as needed on any one order, but I think my most expensive one was $180 for around 2000 parts. I don't plan out MLCad models before building and ordering the parts. I sometimes make a very basic framework for large models, just to visualize what I want the overall shape to be like, but that's about it. Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 It all depends on the size of the MOC and what I need. most of the time it seems like I am spending in the $100 to $200 dollar range per MOC but it can be 10 small orders or one big order. I try to get as much as I can from one dealer but that is almost never possible with the quantities I usually need. I also usually over order on quantities to be safe and to grow my collection. Quote
Dennimator Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Oh.. way too much. I never (and I mean NEVER) seem to have the parts for that awesome MOC idea I get, so usually I build a prototype in different colours (I take what I have), modify it so that it looks good, count / write down a parts list, and then buy them off BL. Total amount I´ve spent on BL? Oh... let´s just say it´s wayy over $1000. Spending PayPal cash as Monopol money on BrickLink orders On! Quote
MrTools Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 I have only made one bricklink order, which was 200 brown 2x2 inverted slopes, 100 2x3 black inverted slopes, and 50 (?) white arches. Quote
Badsneaker Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 In think I'm with the majority. A lot of cash has been sent to BL. My orders can be anywhere from $20-$200 at any given time depending on what I'm working on. I always over-order to be on the safe side. Especially with common pieces. A good tip is to have your favorite sellers opened up on your PC on separate pages. Get your order going with one and check with your other sellers to make sure they don't have a better price. Sometimes even paying shipping from a few different sellers can save money as one may have the same part as another but cheaper. I try new sellers, but usually stick with the ones that have good inventory, new parts, and quick invoicing and shipping. I ordered some used stuff cheap but was dissapointed in the condition so I only buy new stuff. Quote
Destroydacre Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 I've made 1 bricklink order so far totaling a whopping 11 dollars. I'm sure I'll make more orders in the future, but I'm good for the moment. Quote
