Not sure where to put this, so hope it's ok here.

I was going through all my old lego today, trying to find as many old sets as possible (I have all my instruction books saved in a drawer, but the lego was just all in one big box) and I came accross one brick/piece I didn't realise I had - and have no idea what it goes with, or what it is used for, or anything.

Another photo

and another

At first I thought it might be a jet pack? Or some form of scuba gear propulsion sub? But the way a mini-fig holds it just leaves me clueless.

wtf is this?

Could anyone tell me that this is for? I can not see it in any of my instruction books.

It is 100% lego, it says under two of the stud holes in bottom (can't see in photo), so I know I'm not going crazy.

Ah, so it is a jet pack. Although I can't for the life of me work out the correct way for a Mini Fig to hold onto it without looking like he is being dragged along it

I have the piece a few times, and I think it's just some sort of space jetpack. You can put it between a minifigure's head and torso, and he can hold the two 'thingies'. Hope that helps. EDIT: too late...

It is this.

SNIP

Funny that you should say "What on Earth," since this piece comes from the Space Port line of 1999.

That's what I was thinking. Razgriz, that last link you posted is hilarious.

ahhh - so you need to take the head off? That takes me back to a time long ago...

My Minifig was just standing there looking totaly confused at this new 'space age lawn mower' but now he is exited about going into space.

All he needs now is for me to find a space suit...and a space craft...

The part in question first appeared in the Blacktron II line of sets.

Good for throwing that in. When I was reading the comments and saw that they had dated it later than it's actual origin, I had one of those "hey now," moments.

here is a minifig holding it

That set is the set that kind of got me out of my "dark ages". My dark age last 1997 to the early 2000s mainly because LEGO sets in that time frame sucked!

However the Space Port sets of 1999 or 2000 were awesome, I had most/all of them and yet somehow lost a few of the minifigures.

I always wanted a black version of this. The Blacktron II guys would have looked much better wearing these jetpacks if they had been in black.
