wooootles Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) This is the product of me tooling around in my computer after taking a break from building my Cafe Corner (freaking awesome set btw) Notes: -While it's supposed to be scaled with most 6-wide LEGO CITY trucks the cabin of this one goes up to 7 and 8 studs wide. Counting side-mirrors most '6-wide' LEGO trucks are 8-wide anyway -Borrowed the color scheme of Model Team 5571... that and LDD doesn't offer any other choices anyway (only red doors) -Also guessed and attempted to copy the opening hood/bonnet of 7686 -I can't seem, for the life of me, to put a minifig to sit on the seats. But I'm sure in real life it would fit two minifigs, trust me! hehe -It's a whopping $70USD if I order it using Design-by-me, horrible. Cheaper if I buy the parts individually from LEGO.com, even more so when I do it from Bricklink (provided I can find a store that carries all the parts) Comments? Criticisms? Thanks! Ralph_S Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) In terms of scale I think this fits pretty well with LEGO's current range of city trucks. Building bit out to width of seven or even eight studs wide does have one drawback: it makes the wheels look too small. I'm no stranger to building trucks of this size myself and I've found that slightly larger tyres look better. Check out my wrecker truck , for instance. It's got a five wide cab, a 7-wide sleeper cab and a 7-wide aft body. Of course it does mean that you no longer use the type of mudguards you've used on your model, because they really are a bit too small, but I think bigger wheels look better. Regardless of what wheels you use, I think the aft chassis beams between the wheels would look better if they were raised a bit higher. Overall I think it's a nice truck, though, and the colour scheme is classic. Especially in the top picture it looks like a fairly modern American truck and looks very tough. Milan Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Very nice! I would change tires, of course, they seem too small for truck this size, also I would move front axle 1 stud forward, lower trailer connector (fifth wheel), Maybe raise windshield a bit. I like its color, tanks and steps. Quote
legoboy3998 Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 nice truck. recently i ordered some stuff from LDD and noticed the price difference between LDD and PAB some parts in LDD are more expensive but some ar cheaper. i posted about it on T-n-T. it takes a while but i went through excel and figured piece by piece where it was cheaper (LDD or PAB) and ordered it from the cheapest source. it still easier than bricklink. was able to shave like $15 - $20 dollars of so you may want to try that. I wrote to LEGO to inquire about the price difference and they said it is for packaging for LDD. B>S> if you ask me. Quote
prateek Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Great Truck I like the colours and it looks really realistic Quote
JayDuck Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Nice! I was just thinking the other day it would be fun to make a minifig-scale version of the 5571. Quote
wooootles Posted October 25, 2009 Author Posted October 25, 2009 Ah, thanks for the comments! Now that I look at it, the wheels do seem small. The trailer connector, if I were to actually build this, is just a placeholder. I have those balljoints that actual LEGO trucks use and I think that would be better and less clunkier than what I have with this truck right now. recently i ordered some stuff from LDD and noticed the price difference between LDD and PAB some parts in LDD are more expensive but some ar cheaper. i posted about it on T-n-T. it takes a while but i went through excel and figured piece by piece where it was cheaper (LDD or PAB) and ordered it from the cheapest source. it still easier than bricklink. was able to shave like $15 - $20 dollars of so you may want to try that. I've done that too, and this truck costs me around $40 with me picking out the parts from PAB. But then, I have to consider the fact that I have enough black and red basic bricks and plates (this truck uses alot of those) so it can even be cheaper. Based on the comments though, looks like the 5571-style scheme is a winner. Thanks again! Quote
