General Magma Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Hey all! I had a question here, and I wanted to ask; is there any way to make a great Mandalorian helmet without using heaps of expensive stuff or maybe having to spoil a clonetrooper helmet? It's my only step left 'til I'll have my Mandalorian custom done, however, I have been stuck with it for a couple of days, I just can't think of anything. Maybe you might know it, fimo. It's a type of oven-hardening clay I have used several times. I tried that too, but everything I tried was unsuccessfull, and I want a Mandalorian helmet which is better than TLC's version. Arealight has made a very good one, I just don't know if he will sell it and when his store opens again, which is closed now temporarily. I can't wait for it as it may take months for it to happen... He used a clone helmet but he's a master sculptor, and I myself just can't afford losing a clone helmet doing something wrong, so if anyone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance! ~General Magma Quote

woody64 Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 You could always start with a boba fett helmet, saw off the jetpack, and start there? I've also checked the model and it would be printable .... http://www.shapeways.com/detail?model=58372 Woody64 Quote
General Magma Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 You could always start with a boba fett helmet, saw off the jetpack, and start there? That may be possible, but I don't have one sadly... thanks anyways, I'll see if I can manage to buy one to use if that's one of the only possibilities left then to do. @woody: Yes, that's pretty close to it. Is the antenna a clone one? ~General Magma Quote
woody64 Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 The complete helmet was designed from pictures on the net. So all parts are my interpretation of the item. Woody64 Quote
YG-49 Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I made one about an hour ago to show you how easy it is (The real reason is cos I wanted to make one for a long time like you. ) You just cut the fin off, sand it evenly, remove some print, then paint it a little. Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I'm actally working on this myself. I sanded down the helm a bit, and I'm experimenting with the jetpack/helmet seperation. This seems to be the most puzzling. But, with a new jetpack released this year, that is always another option. Quote
General Magma Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 Thanks for the suggestions all. @YG-49: That looks good, is there an easy possibility to get rid of the printed visor and instead have a non-printed one, with the visor cut out? A good example of that is the ep3 helmet which had that. (not that I'm going to use an ep3 one, but it doesn't have the printed visor and so needs a black head, what I want on the helmet that I am trying to make for my Mandalorian) Can I also see more angles of it? I would like to see how it looks like from the side, back, or even from above, so I can decide if it looks good on my Mandalorian... ~General Magma Quote

Commander Flash Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 For cutting helmets, I would suggest an X-Acto knife. They are plenty sharp, and basically sand it without the coarseness of sandpaper. Works fine for me, despite cutting my finger. Quote
CommanderFox Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (edited) General Magma I think you should give ago at doing somthing like what YG-49 did. Sand off the fin and the printing, then there must be some decal around thats a Mando one, maybe Fine Clonier have one. Apply that then add a antenna and colour and you should be complete. I hope you figure out what to do. Love the look of those helmets woody64 YG-49 thats a nice custom but I think the sanding looks abit rough, maybe it's just the light, Well done though! Corvus Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I've always wanted a nice Mando helmet. I'm surprised Brickforge hasn't done it yet. Maybe it's because Arealight's already made one that's holding them back. I've researched un-printed helmets on Bricklink, and boy, are those expensive. YG-49: Nice job there. It's a viable option, but the big problem is that the prominent chin section is still there, and the plastic is too thin to sand/cut down. Quote

Omicron Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Arealight is no longer open, so there's nothing stopping Brickforge now. Arealight is closed for the time being, not permanent. This could be for personal issues or simply restocking. Nothing should stop Brickforge, but I'm assuming that Star Wars isn't their route to take since there are several cuztomizers out there that make SW stuff. -Omi Quote
CommanderFox Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Arealight is closed for the time being, not permanent. This could be for personal issues or simply restocking. It's back open!!!! he has been re-stocking and switching to ABS plastic!! (wasn't he already using ABS? ) Umm I wanted to bump this topic because I have just seen this on Arealight's Flickr Check out the MANDO Helmet!!!!!! I think if he starts producing them, then that'll solve your problem General Magma Hope this helps... CommanderFox Quote
commdr_neyo Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Yes, about the Mando and Clone helmets he said; ''Glad you like it, But NO any SW helmets come out this time. I was thinking about next time............; )'' If he adds those on BL I will make an order for sure Quote
woody64 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 My printed version has arrived: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/woody64/...ld/dscn1334.jpg Woody64 Quote
Big Cam Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Not bad, not bad at all. I personally like the original Boba one better, but that is darn close to it. Quote
