Hey folks,

An Aussie here entering their late twenties and getting hooked back into Lego after a fair time out. Stopped buying/recieving in my mid-teens (thinking, sadly, that I was 'too old') with the occaisional small Star Wars lego gift from my family for sentimental purposes.

Didn't look at the lego shelves in stores for quite a while, but got hooked back into buying around a year ago with some 'fun' Indiana Jones purchases. That led on to castle, which led on to more castle... and somehow in the past year I've convinced my new wife that the medieval market village, the dwarven mine, the Indiana Jones temple of Doom set (to extend my dwarven mine), drawbridge defense, kings chariot, the smaller castle sets from last year and a few random star wars bits and pieces were all necessary purchases.

I was more a collector in my junior years, and mainly with smaller sets. Been blown away by the MOCs (is that the right term?) I've seen online since my interest in Lego got rekindled, and I'm trying to work out the best way (and the best pieces) to start building my brick collection up (particularly greys). Any hints on building up for Castle-themed MOCs? What about building tips for the architectually challenged? Most of the stuff that's been sitting in my box tends to be smaller sets--what I or my parents could afford when I was little--although I've got a fair few of them, and I do have some bigger sets in the original pirate and governor stuff (on those large old moulded baseplates). Other bits tend to be spaceships, a few small castle sets, a fair number of smaller city sets and a whole heap of random building blocks. Several medium green baseplates, a bunch of trees, and a large grey baseplates. For some reason I have an abundance of yellow 2x4s in there.

Anyway, thought I'd say cheers and officially announce to the world my return to Lego :)

welcome back!

I guess your dark ages lasted for many years so are you aware that there have been some colour changes, namely to greys and brown. They are only slight but a grey peice from a new set will look noticeably different in colour if placed right next to a perfect, unfaded peice from your existing collection. This in not always a bad thing tho. In castles I would say it is actually a good thing as mixing old grey and new grey (often called bley for it's bluish tinge) can give things a more authentic look.

Yes MOC is the right term and stands for my own creation.

I've convinced my new wife that the medieval market village, the dwarven mine, the Indiana Jones temple of Doom set (to extend my dwarven mine), drawbridge defense, kings chariot, the smaller castle sets from last year and a few random star wars bits and pieces were all necessary purchases.

LOL well of course they are. Everyone knows that. They are as essential as bread and milk!

As for the best, fastest or cheapest way to build up your collection of peices well if you want alot of a particular peice then www.bricklink.com is a good place to start. Could be cheap, could be very expensive (it all depends on who your buying from), but it's easy to navigate and they are bound to have what ever peice you want in their thousands.

If you want to build up your collection by buying only new sets then there is a website called www.peeron.com which has inventories of most sets which will enable you to see which sets will best forfill you need for parts. It's easy to navigate and has a number of search options available.

As for hints on building technique then I would say go to www.brickshelf.com and look at the thousands upon thousands of MOCs and try building some, however the best techniques will always be the ones you create yourself so I guess the best technique is to just be creative.

You probably know all this but if not then I hope this helps ya out!

Happy building, from England

Hello, and Welcome (back)

as allanp said, check that sites for big help in building and collecting.

I would just add www.brickset.com for set review from other Lego users!

Thanks for this! Have spent the evening (and a bit of money!) browsing and making up for lost time looking for light blue grey parts as well as other necessaries for my future castles :)

Hey welcome back!

This seems to be LEGO's lifecycle. We love them untol around 14, then we are "to old" Then 5-10 years later we realize how cool they are gain, and we end up here.
