ziljin Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I didn't realize how tiny 100 1x2 bricks was. Looks like I will buy thousands of them. So I made the best of it by using two BURP's and some extra pieces to beef up the wall. Overall view Generic minfigs. In the future when they come out with the next castle impulse set with armor, I will pick up dozens of those to gear up these unarmored soldiers. From the back you can see the BURP's and some filler Quote
prateek Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 It looks pretty cool! I'd like to see 10 of these walls (~1000 pieces) Quote
M. Lupin Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Or 100 of them! If you'd like to go for a smoother, cleaner, shave, then use Gillette Fusion look, then you could cover the tops with 1x2 tiles! BTW, nice little army you have there! Quote
ziljin Posted September 19, 2009 Author Posted September 19, 2009 (edited) Well, assuming LEGO doesn't replace the gray colors anytime soon, I intend on buying more bricks to make more walls and hopefully make some sort of castle (but that will require much more bricks no doubt). I will consider tiles later, when I do more elaborate creations. I have a bunch of dark blue slopes from drawbridge defense, and they look pretty cool (although I think any colored slopes will suffice, I am not that picky when it comes to colors), so I will probably make towers too. Sir Dillon Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I've found Classic-Castle's Articile on the "Big Grey Wall Syndrome" very useful when building walls, and you might appreciate it. Good luck in your projects! Quote

Good luck in your projects! That article is great. Thanks a lot, this is exactly what I have been wanting. I was considering posting a topic to see if there was a Castle tutorial with hints and tips. But I didn't think one one actually exist. Quote
Eskallon Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 That article is great. Thanks a lot, this is exactly what I have been wanting. I would love to see this a bit bigger and with spiced up walls. But so far . Quote
Sandy Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 In my opinion it's totally okay to use big wall pieces when building a castle - especially a large one - since it takes much longer and costs much more to build something big with just bricks. Plus a wall made solely from 1x2 bricks is not nearly as sturdy as a wall supported by a few large "window"-pieces. But that's of course just the way I do it, everyone can build with whatever they want. Quote
Etzel Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 A good thing about building a wall with 1x2s is that you can slightly bend the wall so it gets a curved form, like this: When you do this the edges of the bricks is more visible and gives a nice texture to the wall. But it has it's disadvantages too, like the problem to connect it smoothly with the ground and other walls... Quote
ziljin Posted September 20, 2009 Author Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) I ordered a bunch of Red slopes, 1x2 bricks, and 1x4 bricks, and some plates. Going to make a tower out of it. This is the (partial) prototype I made from pieces I had lying around. Pretty bare, but reverse slopes will be used to support staircase and 8x8 plate at the top. Which means I will have to make some sort of balcony to allow minfiigs to look outside the tower. When the pieces arrive, I will build it then see how I can modify the wall to have it compatible with the tower. And thanks for that other link. And the reason why I like using smaller pieces, is because they have a more "realistic" look to it, and looks more detailed. Having giant pieces of "stone" looks odd imo. Although I will probably have to go with that route in bigger creations. For now, my creations are small enough that small bricks = awesome detail. I determined what I will based my first castle on. Warcraft 2 Human Keep. The first tower is costing me around 90usd, so x4 = ~400usd, and the rest will cost at least 600usd probably. 1000+usd for one castle. Sounds terrible. I guess I will have to make it shorter and smaller, or just build half of it to save money. Or buy bricks for it over the span of a year or more. Edited September 21, 2009 by lego40k Quote
ziljin Posted October 1, 2009 Author Posted October 1, 2009 The Tower, I will probably make it smaller So it can fit in with this wall. Connecting them together. Quote
Etzel Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Nice tower! I don't think you should make it smaller, it looks nice when it sticks out a bit from the walls. Some detailing around the windows would look nice I think. It reminds me of a tower in my previous home town Visby: picture Quote

Probably more dark bluish gray bricks to break up the monotone even more. Quote
Karzon989 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Everybody starts small. When you would build it ten times longer it would look very great! Quote
DaleDVM Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I tend to build walls with 1x4 bricks and use 1x2's as needed. The construction tends to be much stronger and obviously 100 pieces goes twice as far but usually doesn't cost twice as much. Quote
