Peppermint_M Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) The 170th anniversary of the Newport Rising, a Chartist Riot in Newport, a city not far from me (in fact I think my villiage may have been on the route that the rioters marched). I learned about it in History in school and found it rather interesting. I hope you enjoy the edumactional MOC I built. Etzel Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Very nice! Thanks for teaching us some local history. I've found it very hard to make MOC's about real historical events because I always find myself looking for a minifig piece I don't have (or haven't been made). But it's very fun to build those kind of MOC's and I think you did a great job, I especially like the pediment over the entrance to the building. Nice SNOT Quote
Peppermint_M Posted September 14, 2009 Author Posted September 14, 2009 I'm lucky that there are a few pictures of the hotel as it was around the place. It is slightly different today (the lower levels are home to highstreet shops and a Starbucks) but I can still see the stone it was made from. I decided to do my best with the parts I had to hand and see what came of it. This was the first (and so far only) MOC I have made with my laptop nearby for pictures to build from. Glad you like it Quote
Sir Dillon Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 I think a few more figures on both sides of the revolt would be good, considering the size of the riot, but as it is this is still a simple yet nice rendition of the scene. Quote
brickzone Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Straightforward but effective - gives a good impression of a riotous scene (the townspeople look agitated!) The posing of the figures and plethora of different offensive instruments contribute a lot to it. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Thanks. I wanted limits of the MOC to be that baseplate, else I'd be stuck trying to figure out the best way to populate the MOC and how the other buildings in the area looked at the time. I was using it as a method of teaching my little brother about it (what with the curriculum changes he might never hear of it) as he likes history. Quote
Athos Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 It really needs some landscaping. A bunch of 1x1 and 1x2 plates in brown, tan, dark and light grey, would make some nice cobblestones for the streets. I also don't like the bars on the window being exposed on the side. I think if you moved it over one stud and put wall there it would look a lot better. Maybe some variation of color and texture on the wall would help too. Maybe more barricades for the rioters, too? The architecture is good and I like the snotwork on the collonade. Though, I think with a few little additions, like I mentioned, you could take the MOC from 'fair' to ' very good.' Steve Quote
-JD- Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Very nice, Peppermint_M! But, I agree that it could do with a little more landscape. I remember working on this in History lessons a few years back. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 No worries about the landscaping, a Legoland trip in the next two/three weeks means I can PaB a whole pile of parts. I also want to change the design a little bit because I have found a cache of tan bricks in my box while sorting. Quote
Zorro Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Looks like a very nice and historical vignette. Well done, only I would have used at least one or more traditional "pitchforks" . Quote
Capt. Redblade Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 A very nice little vignette. Lego really is educational! Quote
