SuperCow Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) Last week I finally got my 8436 truck. took me about a 1.5 year to get it at the right prize. As this model is from 2004, in my dark ages, there is no way getting a new one (I will not pay crazy prizes) As at looking at my local selling site (marktplaats) someone offered this set complete with box and spare parts. And I did a bid, and after 1 week he called me... YIPPEE... I got it. I got it for 45 Euro (about 62 dollar) that is very cheap, most of the time I see them go for about 60-75 Euro (often without box) At the first look its very complete, even the white boxes are inside. I got the model assembled, but its very dusty. And of course I want to build it myself :) So like tomacwhite topic, I'm going to disable it, and clean all to blocks and build it again. Ill make some photo's for the steps I do. Here is the box, with the inside boxes: An here here it the model itself: And the dust on it: More Photos here link Later ill put some more picture on, I already have it disassembled. tomacwhite Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Brilliant, I look forward to reading and looking through your progress. If there is one piece of advice I could give you when cleaning the pieces, it would be to make sure you dry each and every piece. I found using a paper towel from the kitchen was great for this job, as it absorbs any water that is sitting in the pieces. Good luck and fun, that truck looks ace :) Quote
simonwillems Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 That doesn't look that bad, just an unused paintbrush (I use on from the Hema myself) might do most of the job. Great deal by the way, I saw the ad as well but never placed a bid... Good luck on this. Quote
5150 Lego Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Ahh, 8436. this is the one set that brought me out of my darkages. I built the model just as you recieved it (with the crane on the back so i could still tow a trailer). Then i decided i needed a trailer for it. The i decied i needed some equipment to go on the trailer. From there my hobby just took off. Since mine is highly modified (air tank, larger mirrors, 5th wheel hitch, 3rd axle) it will be interesting to see your rebuild. Quote
Blezio Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 The fastest way to clean a model from the dust is: 1) disable it 2) take several dirty socks (thick, cotton socks) which you want to put in the washing machine 3) pull socks to the other side of the material 4) put some bricks inside 5) tie the socks strong (this is the most important moment, if the bricks fall out, you may damage the washing machine!) 6) and put them into the washing machine 7) set the temperature to 30 Celsius degrees add washing powder and the rest of the dirty clothes 8) turn on the washing machine 9) wait about 40 minutes 10) viola! you have now clean clothes, socks and bricks! Very good tip, however, DON'T wash items with metal in them, or parts from the Pneumatic system, and items with stickers are also a little bit sensitive to water ;) Quote

CP5670 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 These things work very well for removing dust off Lego models and require no disassembly or washing of the model, although they won't remove sticky stuff like dirt. I settled on these after trying many other things over the years. Quote
SuperCow Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) My best experience with cleaning models i do this. Its its really dirty I use the dishwasher. I put the Lego in a special bag, use a dishwasher tablet in it and wash it at 40 C degrees. But this truck isn't dirty enough, so I clean the blocks with my hand using a wet wipe. Here are some pictures from disassembling the truck. The crane: cabin: Chassis: spare parts: Edited August 17, 2009 by SuperCow Quote
Milan Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Great! I like these restoration topics. How do you like the truck? Quote
SuperCow Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 Well, I think I'm still old school and prefer the studded bricks more. As for stud-less it looks very nice, I only miss a part of the technicality. Older models (studded) are often more technical, more functionality. Like the steer in the cabin, in a older model it would steer also. Quote
Musikfreak Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) I tought the only cabin truck which also had steering in the cabin was a B-Model of one of the F1-Cars (which was nearly studless). However I know what you mean - the first studless models were often very large and offered the same functionality as the old ones did with less space (they changed in the last years imho and now the studless models offer nice functionality). But the 8463 is very well equipped for his time I think. It's from the time which belongs to my dark ages too and I quite like it (thought a lot about buing it used). Has a nice selection of parts and the modular extension on the back is nice. I think of it as a predecessor of 8258. I'm happy to see more of this set and will wait happily for the review. SuperCow Posted August 19, 2009 Author Posted August 19, 2009 I have cleaned the parts. I have checked the parts with peeron, And this is what I have leftover parts.(no spares) I'm pretty sure that I need them. Everything nice sorted, ready to build There 6 DkStone Technic Beam 4 x 0.5 Liftarm, only 4 of them have a different colour (In the picture on the right is the good colour) Its not the sun, only those 4 have a different colour, strange. I appears your truck became the victim of the changing shades of grey in that same period of time, so you have a set of mixed tones. Or the seller mixed up the colors before selling the truck to you. Lupus74 Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Good evening to you! I really love this set. This one (and of course 8421) brought my wife and me back from our dark age. It is actually sleeping dismantled in its box in our basement. We are thinking about waking this little baby up soon - after we finished building Green Grocer (10185) and the 8 unbild 2009 technic sets which are still sealed. Greetings from Lupus Quote
SuperCow Posted August 31, 2009 Author Posted August 31, 2009 (edited) I have build the truck. The chassis was straight forward. The cabin was the most work. I've tried to make a small time lap of the build process. Warning allot of photo's :D Photos Chassis: Cabin: Chassis & Cabin: Next will be the crane Edited August 31, 2009 by SuperCow Quote
