Go Cubs Go! Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I just wanted to know, when you build sets do you: build them and take them apart months later, or do you build them and put them on display. I usually play with them or whatever until I get bored with it then I take it apart and build something new. Please post. From, Go Cubs Go! Quote
user Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I do both I have sets on display and I also take sets apart which I am sure a lot of people on here do. But I think this topic is rather pointless without a poll. But that's just me. Quote

You could always ask an admin or mod to add a poll since you aren't a knight yet. Just edit the topic so it says that you would like somebody to add a poll if you really want them to. Quote

Peppermint_M Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Well, I don't display anything due to lack of space, everything is stored away. I also don't often keep sets together, I am mostly a MOCer and the bulk of sets I buy are for parts. That said, I do keep sets of exceptional quality (maybe with tiny modifications). Many of my Agents sets are in one still built but everyhting else is taken apart as soon as i decide i want the parts . I think the "for parts" set that stayed together the longest was the Sentai Mountain Fortress, it was so large and took me so long to build that I had to have a really special project in mind before I took bits apart (I still have one module together for another project). Quote
brickzone Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I mostly eventually disassemble my sets after having displayed them for a bit (many smaller sets, even some slimmer medium ones, just on the edge of bookshelf in front of books). Some sets get disassembled quick enough if unremarkable or I need the parts. I have thus far kept intact the major sets (and probably will continue to do so) - like Medieval Marketplace, Green Grocer, Café Corner, Town Plan, Market Street, Holiday Train (well, I modded it to be RC electric to go round the Christmas Tree), Emerald Night, etc. I intend using all these in custom scenes and modding them too. I've kept some other sets in a disassembled form, for using for modding later (i.e. start with the set and then expand/redesign) - e.g. Volcano Base, Indy Temple and Corridor. A few old sets I've kept bagged up for sentimental or later display if I ever get a Lego room (Guarded Inn, Black Knight's Castle, Black Monarch's Castle, King's Mountain Fortress, Hogwarts Prisoner of Azkhaban version). I keep any decent vehicles intact - so lots of post '05 City and Agents. Quote
daxflame680 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Most of my sets are displayed for a couple of months before getting taken apart. If a set is good for parts, and I don't want to destroy it, I'll get a second copy of it. I will usually decide to destroy the set though. My mom doesn't like it when I destroy a set, she thinks it is a waste Quote
HumanPackMule Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 With my sets I prefer to keep them together and on display for at least a year and then then take them apart and build something out of the parts. Quote
blueandwhite Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Destroy as needed. I'm a brick vulture, so almost any set is subject to my wrath. Quote
Commander Flash Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Step 1: Nice Built set Step 2: A couple pieces taken from it for mocs Step 3: Very much missing pieces Step 4: Deconstructed. The cycle of life the brick. Quote
MrTools Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 i take mine apart if needed, i will keep sets together like the viking double catapult because its mainly technic and i dont need those parts other than that like i said if i need the parts i will take them Quote
Mraz Skintas Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I generally display them, but take them apart for space after I get too many more. I am in the process of rebuilding most of the destroyed ones now, only to find out that I am moving Friday. But I prefer to display as much as I can. Quote
hewkii9 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I destroy them shortly after I've felt they've run out of playability, but I don't really buy sets for parts either. Quote
sologuy369 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Hi Go Cubs Go!I display my sets, but I have lots of sets now.SO I put them in boxes based on theme and/or wave Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I usually buy sets for parts, so i mostly take them apart. Only sets still (partially) together and on display are the Emerald night, Town plan and the plane from Peril in Peru. Stickers haven't been applied as i do plan on making MOCs out of them. Quote
Spyder Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I like to buy sets for the pieces, so I usually don't keep the sets together for more than a week or two. The longest set (or at least part of a set) I have kept together is Batman's Tumbler. I just can't bring myself to destroy it. The Agent's mission 3 plane I kept together until a couple weeks ago, then I modded it, then I took it apart. To me, that was one of the coolest planes Lego has ever come out with, but it just had too many cool pieces, so I took it apart. Quote
Matn Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 (edited) I have tried not to. My Star Wars sets are displayed, just as my Adventurers sets. I don't take pieces of them when I want to build a MOC and I need a specific piece. A few Castle sets are displayed, but most of them (even the Dwarves' Mine) have been taken apart, so are my Harry Potter sets. Only seven of them are displayed, the other ones are used in MOCs, sometimes I rebuilt them but it doesn't take long to take it apart. Huge sets, like the Café Corner or the Train Depot, will never be taken apart. I sometimes use a piece of it, but I usually put it back. My space monorail is stored away in its box, I will never use a piece of it for MOCs. The Breezaway Café is kept together because of its value and because it's a really nice set. The LEGO City yellow train station is also kept together because I plan to use it in my city, whenever that is and it's also a nice set. I'd like to keep all my sets build, but that doesn't work. It starts with taking a small piece here and there, and before you know it, the whole set is taken apart! It's a bit a random process. And I've noticed lately that when I'm buying a LEGO set I first look at the useable pieces in it, so lately I haven't bought any sets. EDIT: just begun parting out the Batmobile for its slopes. Mirandir Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I rarly put any of my sets on Display. Besides my Cafe Corner and UCS Batmobile sets can be taken apart, either completly or partially, just hours after it was built. Sets lasting for more than a week is quite rare. Quote
HumanPackMule Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Can an admin add a poll to this topic? I think many here would be interested to see the results Quote
Milan Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I rarely buy sets, mainly parts from BL. But when set is purchased, I put it together and disassemble it the same day and sort the parts where they belong. Quote
frogstudio Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I never disassemble the sets. After they are built and displayed for some time, they are stored in plastic boxes. The few sets I disassembled were due to lack of space, but even the, I didn't use the pieces. I bagged them divided by set. Whe I want to MOC, I ussually design the item with LeoCad and then order the pieces in Bricklink. Quote
Brickvergnugen Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 When a new set arrives, my first task is to open all the parts and just create something random. The actual set comes second. Gradually, the set is picked clean as the hunger for bricks on other projects grows. Eventually the 'bones' are sorted into storage. Destroy as needed.I'm a brick vulture, so almost any set is subject to my wrath. "Brick Vulture", I wish I had thought of that. Quote
Eilif Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I display every set I get... However, for me, "display" is a few shelves where where sets reside until I need the parts or need space for a new set. Some sets have been on display for over a year now, but as soon as I need the parts, they will be no more. Quote
