Klaus-Dieter Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 (edited) Hello everybody! With the very limited bricks available in LDD for historical sets I designed with LDD a Roman legionnaire. Here you are: Roman Legionnaire Pieces: 17 The Roman legionnaire is on his long way across the mountains with his many package. This set includes a Roman legionnaire, a brick-built backpack, a buckler, an axe, a shovel, a sword and two lances. Comments are welcome! Klaus-Dieter Edited July 5, 2009 by Klaus-Dieter Quote
Emperor Claudius Rome Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Pretty good for LDD I hope you make one with real bricks though Quote
SWMAN Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 It really is too bad that LDD doesn't have more options when it comes to minifigures. It would be fun to be able to create more detailed custom figures. Still, good job considering what you have to work with. Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Pretty good for LDD I hope you make one with real bricks though Thanks, Emperor claduis rome! No, I won't make one with real bricks since there the parts don't exist like in LDD (legionnaire's helmet, red buckler and a backpack with many holders). Still, good job considering what you have to work with. Thanks, SWMAN! I totally agree with you, SWAM! The parts for minifigs in LDD seem to me be selected totally randomly and with no system. Theres tons of ways to build it! You could use a dwarf helmet for him. The KKII square shield can work. And the large back-pack from the first adventurers line can work as a a pack Edited July 6, 2009 by Emperor claduis rome Quote

Captain Green Hair Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'm sorry, but this looks like a fireman with a riot shield to me. Quote
Hound Knight Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Pardon me if I sound like a salesman, but have you seen these? Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) I'm sorry, but this looks like a fireman with a riot shield to me. Come on! Well, you're right - but it's only LDD. Pardon me if I sound like a salesman, but have you seen these? Well, this is not a bad try - it's of course better than my LDD MOC - but nevertheless really not perfect: -the face/head and the torso aren't printed -the spire of the lance is much too thick -the helmet looks more like a chrome-silvern egg cosy with open front than a legionnaire's helmet Which I really like are the red plumes. Otherwise I hope that if TLG hopefully releases a Roman theme one day they'll offer much better weaponry, helmets and printed torsos to us! Klaus-Dieter Edited July 6, 2009 by Klaus-Dieter Quote
MarcusV3 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 -the face/head and the torso aren't printedI don't think he was trying to say this was a great roman fig I think he was trying to tell you to check out brickforge for roman accessories Quote
Admiral M Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I think it looks cool, but you could improve it alot by adding a breastplate, like in mine: What do you think? Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Your Roman legionnaires look of course much better than mine, Admiral M! I really them - you really designed them very realistic! Klaus-Dieter Quote
Delmar Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 plate armor is not very authentic to roman era, the mainly used segment armor. But i realise the limitations of LDD and lego in general. Made some searching myself and came upp with this: This torso: (just change to red arms) And these Legs: Might just look wierd though, i dont have these legs myself so i couldnt try it. Quote
Guss Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 maybe it'll not look weird if you replace the arms of the torso by red arms! Quote
Delmar Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Just found this pic on Brickshelf: Customization solves everything Quote
Admiral M Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Yep! I think it would look better with a brickforge square shield and helm, but this looks good. Quote
Hound Knight Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I don't think he was trying to say this was a great roman fig I think he was trying to tell you to check out brickforge for roman accessories Yes, exactly. Quote
Tanotrooper Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Well, this is my design: (figure on the far right) If you turn the plate armour around, you have a reasonable depiction of the lorica segmentata. The lorica hamata (chainmail) is only represented by two of the Viking torsos, of wich the dark bley one with the iron dishes on it is the only usable. (But you're stuck with the dishes... Good for a centurio or honoured soldier but not really for standard legionaries.) as shown here: The lorica squamata (scale armour) has been used in a lot of torsos such as the soldier torsos of the newest castle line, but also in the older sets. Lorica squamata has been used by legionaries but was overall less used than lorica hamata or segmentata. In what extent hamata and segmentata were used, remains a point of discussion. (Chainmail costed more than the segmentata, and if suitable subarmalis, a sort of padded linnen armour, was worn, it provided better protection than the segmentata.) Squamata (sometimes in bronze etc.) was prefered by centurions, signifers, ... (officers) TT Quote
fenris Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 (edited) funny: just found your photos on brickshelf - thought they look great - and wanted to post them here... they are really well done! personally i prefer lego-legs... Edited July 21, 2009 by fenris Quote
