The 'Golden Four' remained first throughout the race and won in a time of 6:01:39.

Australia was in fourth place at the 500 metre mark, but steadily moved into second place to repeat their Sydney 2000 Olympic Games performance with a silver medal, timing 6:02.79.

Italy took bronze in 6:03.74. They had a hard time winning the medal, as the Netherlands crossed the finish line only 0.05 seconds behind them, having been in sixth place early in the race.
