Hi guys, i am new here, and a bit of noob at Lego in general, so am not sure if this topic has been raised before.

I bought 8287-1 a while back (this one), and recently i got the new PF components.

This led me to wonder if i could control the old motor with the IR RC functions.

So i did a bit of digging and experimentation, found out that of the 4 wires from the PF plugs, if i connected the middle 2 to the poles of the old motor, i can get the motor to respond to the IR remote (through the receiver of course).

But the problem is i currently have the wires taped to each other, and thats proving to be a bit of a loose connection. Was thinking of soldering the wires, but am afraid of damaging the parts, especially the older motor and the wire for it. Anyone thought about a solution to this? or suggest any ways to solve the problem?

You actually don't need to do any of that. Just get the PF extension cable, which has a 9V connection on one end.

This cable works on practically every combination of PF and 9V parts, with the exception of running a PF IR receiver from a 9V power source. Various workarounds have been proposed for this.

CP5670, in his title he wrote that, from some reason, he can not use conversion cable.

BTW fico86, that cable is really useful, if you can, do yourself a favor and get few of those...

ah well, currenlty dont have the means to order online (i am still a student), but will see about that. BTW does the Lego S@H ship to Singapore? i Dont see it being listed on the ship to list. Have to go through bricklink then.

Being student is the best time for lego...i am student also, and i have a half-time job, to support buying legos after my dark ages...

Bricklink is great source for parts, most of sellers ship worldwide, and you have different prices to choose from.

I need to read thread titles more carefully.

You might want to ask Whitefang about it, who lives there too. The cable prices are higher on Bricklink, although if you only need one they're still fairly cheap.

You can of course solder the PF leads to a 9V connector, but that will take some work and seems pointless given that the extension cable is specifically designed to do this. The only reason to modify any wires is to make the conversion work with the IR receiver.
