Captain Green Hair Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 Really enjoying the series. I had a minor question: why do some of the gunports have a 1x2 plate at the bottom of the opening while others have a 1x2 tile? That is because i will only put in a few of the guns on the small part of the deck i made, the other portholes will stay closed. You can ofcourse change this on your ship if you like. Quote

SlyOwl Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Not being a ship builder (yet), this will be an invaluable resource for when the time comes for my first non-steampunk ship! Good to see that pearl gold trim we talked about Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted August 25, 2009 Eurobricks Emperor Posted August 25, 2009 Do I spy another WIP ship in the background? Indeed, that's a special project. You'll hear all about it when it is finished. Quote
muffinman42 Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 i can see 2 frigates here! one on the shelf in the center of the picture and one above!, just how many frigates are you makeing? Quote

Two frigates? Have you been drinking Sir? More serious, the one above is my frigate L'Orient. It is scheduled for destruction because it's one of the first ships I've ever made and looks kinda crappy next to more recent work. Quote

Admiral M Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) Sorry, but I'm quite confused. I don't understand the SNOT work in the bow and stern. You lost me after step 3, you really started moving fast. It is probably because of my own ineptness to take on such a large and complex project as this, but is it in any way possible for you to slow down, just a tad, and then show me some more close up pictures of the way you built the stern, how you got the tilt in the cabin's back bay windows, how you incorperated the galleries, and how the whole thing sits on the stern. Its probably just me, because i've been spoilt by the piece by piece instruction provided by instruction manuals, but i'm hardly getting any of the pictures. Thanks for doing this, it's quite a project. Edited August 25, 2009 by Admiral M Quote

If you look closely you can see the hinges that are placed under the windows in the cabin. The headrails are attached to the bricks with the stud out as shown in the picture from the other side. I'll try and take more pictures when i build the other side. If you have specific problems, please post a pic here and i'll try to explain it better. Quote
General Armendariz Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Im alittle behind so I better get working, any ways here is a WIP pic of so far (will post another when updated) Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 It is good to see that some of you are building with me here, i hope to get some creative input from you guys! General Armendariz i see you used some black plates on the hull. Are you planning to change them? If so, you might want to do that before we make the decks, otherwise it will be quite a difficult operation to get them out..:/ Quote
steele Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) You have 2 mast bases installed---is it going to be a 2-masted ship? I thought it'd have more, being a 5-center-section design. Also, the prow looks like it's been extended forward, compared to step 4. You asked for comments on the stern design in the building thread-- (I just ordered the last hull piece I needed yesterday, so I shoud be able to start mine as soon as I make another Bricklink order or two for the hinges and "striping" parts) I think it's a bit "flat" on the back (I'd like to see more of the tall, steep slope pieces---like 4460, 2449, and 3684). And maybe some arches. Also, I'm not very fond of hinges/plates used like this, to "fill in" areas at an angle: Edited August 26, 2009 by steele Quote

I hope you use those slopes mentioned and make the stern as you please, i'd love to see what you can come up with. This project isn't meant to produce all similar ships, i'm just showing how i build a basic ship, explaining my techniques. I have used the hinges to make that pearl gold stripe, and trust me, making ornaments with the small selection of pearl gold parts is a challenge. Quote

Rick Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 This project isn't meant to produce all similar ships, i'm just showing how i build a basic ship, explaining my techniques. I really enjoy browsing this topic every time a step is added. Like you said, it's important that the basic techniques are covered and explained. What's the fun in just building what everyone else is building? Therefore, I was also expecting some more variation in the color schemes used, although the black and dark red looks really good. If there are more people building, I would love to see some more WIP pictures. I don't even own an official pirate ship (yet), but as SlyOwl said before, this will definitely be an invaluable resource for everyone who is ever going to build ships. Quote

Thanks, that is the whole point! I have literally spend hours and hours on MSN to explain stuff to various people (which i really enjoyed doing), but this will make it a bit easyer in future. A few posts back i saw the question if the new hulls can also be used, yes they can! And they have some advantages over the old, i just hate the fact that there is no proper stern. But the advantage is that you ccan widen it with reddish brown jumpers and plates to make a straight waterline and they don't have the silly hole in the bow. Keep posting those WIP shots guys! I'd love to see colour schemes, alternative interiors, sterns and what not! Quote
Cakeman Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 I've been really inspired by Captain Green Hair's frigate build, and I'm in the process of ordering parts etc (not that easy, as I try to order from one store only but maybe I'll have to give that up) too even though it's not goint to happen anything all that soon. Just wanted to cheer you all on and thank CGH for the effort. Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 Ok guys i have uploaded more detailed shots of the construction. If there are any specific questions, now is the time to ask them, next time she will be closed up and i will start detailing her..... Quote
Admiral Bejaune Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Looking good so far CBH.. The dark red with pearl gold looks fantastic.. Everyones WIPs look great! Im still here for anyone who needs help. I would post my build wip.. but its not a frigate. It has grown into another two decker. Keep up the good work. And like I said.. IF you need help just ask. -Admiral Bejaune Quote
steele Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Could you go over what mast pieces are needed? It looks like the aft one is a "tall mast base" with a mast center section on top, while the mid one is 2 "tall columns" stacked on top of each other. Bow sprit is the old bow sprit piece with a "mast top" on top of that. My current guess of parts needed: http://peeron.com/inv/parts/4844 x1 http://peeron.com/inv/parts/2537 x2 http://peeron.com/inv/parts/2538 x4 http://peeron.com/inv/parts/30047 x1 http://peeron.com/inv/parts/6168a x2 Are any of these needed? http://peeron.com/inv/parts/6067 Quote
