Blakbird Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 There's a new folder on Brickshelf with images of the new 8258 truck. Some of these are repeats, but some of them are images I had not seen before: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=387752 Quote
warpug Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Wow, great find, thanks for sharing. It's interesting to compare the actual vehicle with the technic model, they did a good job capturing the look of the original. Looks like a solid, complicated set, can't wait to get it. The only drawback for me is the more excessive than usual reliance on decals. I can't stand them since they peel and flake off after while. Quote

The link I provided shows a Volvo truck which is pretty similar, but I think the closest match based on styling is a Scania R 620 8x4. This is the only model with a V-8, and 8258 clearly has a V-8. I wouldn't go as much as counting the type of engine into the exact model that TLC was trying to copy. Most Semi trucks, both American and European in design, generally use a straight 6 cyl diesel engine. I have never seen TLC Us a straight six in any of their model designs. Do to space constraints, i understand why they go with V engines instead. But the Scania you pictured is a very good example of what TLC was going after. The only real difference i see in pic you posted and 8258,is that it appears that the Scania in the picture has a flat bed and 8258 clearly has a 5Th wheel hitch for towing trailers. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) The only real difference i see in pic you posted and 8258,is that it appears that the Scania in the picture has a flat bed and 8258 clearly has a 5Th wheel hitch for towing trailers. True, but the bed or 5th wheel are optional. I couldn't find a photo of one with all of the same options. And you are right about the history of LEGO engines. The venerable 5571 had a V-8, though the truck it represented almost certainly did not. 8285 and 8868 actually did have a 6 cylinder engine, but it was a V rather than an inline. I've seen very few LEGO inline engines. 8455 has an inline 3. The very first auto chassis, 853, had an inline 4, as does the 8284 tractor. The 8847 dragster had a very odd inline 2 disguised as a V-8. The 8859 tractor also had an inline 2. Pretty well everything else was either a single cylinder or a V. There were a couple which were horizontally opposed (boxer). In this particular case, the fact that you actually can get the Scania R series with a V-8 made me think it was a pretty good fit. CP5670 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I'll almost certainly get this set, but it does have its flaws. The main issue is the crappy stabilizer design with the manually operated ends. I wonder if it's possible to improve them and make them come down automatically as they extend out, like the ones on 8421. Also, there is a Wabra sign in front of the steering wheel. Is that a TLG set designer? 8285 also said "Wabra's Road Service" on it. The only drawback for me is the more excessive than usual reliance on decals. I can't stand them since they peel and flake off after while. They might have changed the sticker material in the last year or two. Recent sets I have don't seem to do this anymore. Quote
Siegfried Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Good find indeed! I've become more interested in this as it seems it's largely powered by one small motor thus it must have an interesting transmission. I still want better photos of the mechanics though... and I'm worried about the price. Quote
Smithy Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Think this model is due to retail at 149 euros. Think last year bulldozer was about 120 euros when it started retailing. I'm looking forward to building this set. Looks like it'll be one of the most complicated models I've ever built. Quote
Milan Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 This truck would be soooo good in modelteam. AS for the stickers, it is the easiest way to decorate large panels. Quote
