Dollar Bill Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Has anyone found any MOCs of the book series "The Edge Chronicles"? If you don't know what it is, it's very steampunk with flying pirate ships, floating cities, a different world called simply The Edge, and involves many characters. I love the series and thought it would be a very good source material to MOC from. Anyone found any MOCs or share this opinion? Quote
L-space Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I don't think I know it. Who wrote it? So I can give it a look-see on the web. Quote
Dollar Bill Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 Written by Paul Stewart, illustrated (well) by Chris Riddell. I think the first book was published in 1999, the last one (#10) was published earlier this year. Quote
L-space Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Okay, I found the publisher's website here and will have a closer look later on. Quote
Skipper 24 Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I have read the entire series of these books and I certainly recommend them to avid readers. ihaven't seen any MOCs based off these books, but I guess it is sort of like Steampunk. Quote
Davey Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Oh yay!!! I LOVE 'The Edge Chronicles'! I've read books #1 and #2 and have started #3. My lovely wife on the other hand...has read the whole series and is the one who got me into them. I have yet to see any MOC's based on this series. Oddly enough...I was having this exact same thought about two days ago so your thread is very timely (for me). I am planning to build some various MOC's based on 'The Edge Chronicles' as soon as Brickworld is over. Not sure what my first one will be but some of my ideas are. * The Stormchaser * The Edgedancer * Flabsweat's Exotic Animal Shoppe * The Stone Gardens I'm sure there are tons more things like the 'Bloodoak Tavern' and what-not that could be built as well. The world of 'The Edge Chronicles' is so amazing and would make an excellent fan-developed LEGO theme. Glad to see other people are thinking about this as well. Speaking of skyships...Hinckley built a nice skyship awhile back. IIRC...it was called 'The Brutal' and was on display at Brickworld 2008. Correct me if I am wrong, Hinckley. -Dave Quote
SlyOwl Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 My FRS Shakespeare had some Edge Chronicles input (along with Stardust); I haven't actually read them, but I saw some of the drawings in a friend's book) Quote
Tom Bricks Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I love this series and have read books 1-9. I was just thinking the other day how nice a ship would be. I didn't think that many other people read these books though. This would be such a better liscence than Ben- 10. This truly has everything TLC could ask for, vehicles, locations, characters. I think I know what I'm building today. Quote
Eilif Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Wow, those books look great! I've been looking for some steampunk fiction. For those who have read the books, what level of writing are they? 1-Dr Seus 2-Amelia Bedelia 3-Series of Unfortunate events 4-Chronicles of Narnia 5-Robinson Carusoe I ask becasue while I like to mix in some youth novels with my reading, I'm not sure I can start another youth series until I finish the Unfortunate events books I have. Any other steampunk fiction out there? Quote

Any other steampunk fiction out there? This is so exciting! I absolutely loved the series and can't wait to see what people build. To answer the question on the level of writing - I'd say they are on the level of Chronicles of Narnia, especially once you get past the first book. They are quick reads, but you cover three generations of one family throughout the series, so there is plenty of "ah ha!" moments. I too have been mixing in some youth novels and this is one of the better series I have found. Enjoy!! Quote
Eilif Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Thanks folks, I'll have to look into these. For some reason I've been faciniated with steampunk/victorain-sci-fi recently and this looks like a nice fantasy twist on that. Quote
Dollar Bill Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 Yay! I'm so glad that there are other Edge fans out there. And as to the reading level scale, I'd say between a 3 and 4 as well, leaning a little bit towards the three, but it is much more mature. SlyOwl, that ship looks very snazzy. Also, I can't wait to see everyone's skyship MOCs. I would try to build one but...I fail at MOCing over half the time. If I had maybe an entire three days devoted to JUST MOCing, all my collection in one place, with a few hours of thought, I may be able to come up with something decent. Quote
Tom Bricks Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 I'm working on a microscale version of the edge right now! I think that I will use it as the background of a larger ship but does anyone have any ideas for the characters? there are so many and I can't find anything that works well. Quote
SlyOwl Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Aw, c'mon, Docter Seuss is incredibly challenging to read! Also, I can't wait to see everyone's skyship MOCs. Ah, so just generic flying ships? Check out the index in the Pirates forum There's some more in the Steampunk index Quote
Dollar Bill Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 That's a skyship. It looks like a normal ship in a way, but that large ball thing in the middle, enclosed in the cage, is the "flight rock". It's a buoyant stone that keeps the ship in the sky. When cooled, the ship rises, when heated, it lowers. Sorta like a mix between a ship and a hot air balloon. :) Quote
ILikePi Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 (edited) When cooled, the ship rises, when heated, it lowers. Sorta like a mix between a ship and a hot air balloon. :) Except for the fact that when it's hot, it goes down instead of up. Edited June 7, 2009 by ILikePi Quote
Tom Bricks Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I built the city in miniscale last night but the ship in miniscale is giving me trouble. I think I will have to wait until I get a hull and some masts before I attempt it in minifig scale. Quote
Dollar Bill Posted June 8, 2009 Author Posted June 8, 2009 I can't wait to see it! Wait...we will get to see it, right? Quote
Tom Bricks Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 (edited) I can't wait to see it! Wait...we will get to see it, right? Not sure if it's good enough to go here but you can check later Edit: on second thought I think I'll post it here I need something to test my picture taking skills on. djmangunz Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 If you are into steampunk pirate novels, try the Larklight trilogy by Philip Reeves. They are brilliant reads and very well illustrated. Warner Brothers is making a movie based on the novels due out around 2011. Because of WB and Lego's prior relationship with lines like Harry Potter and Batman, I am crossing my fingers that Lego will make some sets from the movies. Quote
Columbus019 Posted June 11, 2016 Posted June 11, 2016 They are one of my favorite book series ever, after the discworld, harry potter and middle earth. (check them all out guys). Just typing in lego edge chronicles gives up some MOCS on images. Also, did anyone else see the Ninjago raid zeppelin and see the MOCing possibilities for the edge chronicles. Columbus Quote
