I'm after trains and modular hourses. I also try to get some old sets MISB, namely those I wanted so much but never got as a child. Well, I sometimes need quite a lot of money for LEGO. I often think the same way you do. Sometimes I must really restrain myself. By the way, the new pirate ship is also very tempting for me.

It completely depends on why you collect and what you do with your collection.

I collect LEGO generally, with a focus on older castle and space themes. I like to MOC and display what I build. I have also created several wargames that use LEGO and have enjoyed playing those with friends. I do not collect just to have though. If I am not using it or have plans for using something I will get rid of it.

Decide for yourself why you are collecting and what your ultimate LEGO goals are. Only then will you know what you should focus on and how much money to spend on it. In ten years will you be kicking yourself for not saving that money to buy a new car? Will you turn around and sell it all off on ebay to put a down payment on a new house or buy a wedding ring? If you know where you want to end up, it is easier to plan now how to get there.

As most of us know, Lego as a hobby is an expensive one. 75% (or more) of us enthusiasts have limited budget and thus can only buy sets (or themes) that we really like. Of course, there are a handful of AFOLs whom money is no matter and can afford to buy each and every set that is released by TLC.

So my suggestion is to ask yourself (seriously) which theme you really like to collect and concentrate on it. Follow through with your decision no matter how tempting it is to buy other themed sets when you see it. Maybe on some occasions when your budget allows, you can buy these sets. Hope this helps and happy building!

If you can afford it, why not? Initially, I'll only collected City and Castle. But now, due to my 30% Legoland discount, I buy all the themes. Whatever you can afford and want, go for it. What else would stop you?

It depends what you get Lego for.

I get Lego to MOC, I love the sets and once every few years Lego does a set that is so perfect to me I keep it together for a long time, or never plan to take it apart (The Adventurer's Sphinx was the first. Agents Mission 6 was the second) but I mainly buy for the parts, colours, shapes and minifigs/accessories. Therefore I will buy any set that has parts I want, at a price I'm happy with (I won't buy Star Wars sets above battlepack price) If the set only has a few parts and a high price I want I don't buy it. I budget myself if I have been spending too much. And there are some themes I don't bother to collect because I don't like all of it.

I am collecting one current theme, Agents, mainly because it has captured my imagination and has so much MOC potential too me. One past theme: Alpha Team and I have all of the Speed Racer sets. (Love the film, love the cars and have fond memories of the 1990s reboot cartoon I watched as a child).

If you don't get Lego to MOC you should figure out why you collect (unless you already know) and then work out a limit for yourself. If it's minifigs you want, re-sale of the parts will get you some of the money you want. If minifigs aren't your thing, sell 'em on. If you like the sets just for building, buy your favourites. It's all down to you. :classic:

Buy what you really want and spread it trough the year, that is how I collect. Also, when you want to buy a set just for the minifigs... Bricklink.

I restarted collecting Lego in 1999, when the first Star Wars Sets hit the shelves, and was fine with that.

Later the Batman and some City sets joined my collection.

I always liked the Castle and Pirate themes, but next to the need for money there is a need for time and room for all the collections, and THAT are the real problems.

If you have enough money, time and room, then go on and collect every Lego you want, and why not?

OK, I have no issues with spending £1000 - £2000 per year on Lego, the problem I have is I am running out of space to store the empty boxes once I've built the sets, Why are the boxes so god damm big! I only wish they contained enough bricks to completely fill those oversized boxes ;-)

This year I am collecting City, Technic, Pirates, Power Miners, Trains and hopefully a modular building

But overall, my main collections are Trains, Technic and City

I think there's been lots of great replies to this already, but I think it all depends on you, the individual.

The collector, the builder, the fan that just loves Lego. What I would suggest though is perhaps selling your older Lego to afford these new sets? If you don't use the pieces or are no longer interested in older themes maybe it's time to re-evaluate what you've got, and decide what you're most interested in down the line.

I collect IJ,pirates, city, castle and i also bought few power miners, spongebob, angents sets. And its deffo not too much themes. Actually i'm not one of those who say i collect this or that theme i just collect LEGO. I buy the sets which i like and thats it.

But if you cant afford them all then you just have to make a selection. Or just wait for some time and get them at lower prices.

I'm collecting mostly Castle, but I buy other sets when I see something what I can use in Castle (Powerminers monsters, pirates heads and brown pieces...)

As for me I usually collect sets according to what I'm in to. Like right now I'm into space police so if they where available I would buy them but then I go to the next phase and buy other things. So I've unfortunately never collected a whole series. I wish I didn't change my mind so much!

Star Wars obviously and the new Castle theme.

Must have all of those

And then when I stumble upon Classic Castle and Classic Space I have to get those as well.

I did collect Exo-Force and Viking as well, but luckily they were discontinued which is sad, but a good thing for my wallet

I have a hard enough time keeping up with all the Star Wars sets. I couldn't possibly start collecting Indy sets, for example, because I'd only be able to afford the cheap ones and that's no way to build up a collection.

I have some old Pirates, Castle, City, Western and Harry Potter sets but I'm going to sell them soon when I put the sets back together.

Thank you all, since all the new sets will comeout in august and I think that I will collect them. Thanks again.

What do you mean:Is it too much? You can never collect(Or have  )too much Lego. But you have to pace yourself,if you like them all equally, then alternate,if you like one more than the others, then buy more of that than the others.

I used to collect only town sets but this years pirates have opened the floodgates and I have, since then, began collecting Pirates, Castle, Ninja, Indiana Jones and the Western theme. This has cost allot but I think that you can build a decent collection with a couple cheap sets, some bricklink orders and some mocing. you certainly don't need all the sets from a line, only some of the better ones.

If I were you, I'd dump Indiana Jones and get the new Space Police instead. Licensed themes are always more expensive than LEGO originals, and personally I think SP3 is better anyway.

But yeah, if you feel like you're spending too much on LEGO, just buy in moderation. You don't have to get every set from a theme.

I honestly believe that a lot of us started collecting Lego with a certain theme in mind. We told ourselves that this is the theme we'd like to collect and concentrate on. Then a few months or years down the road, a new theme catches our attention and before we know it... voila! We've added new theme(s) to our ever increasing collection! That's how it is with Lego for me. Just don't overdo it and never overspend. Self control is the key.

I used to get a Star Wars set on occansion and still some times do. I'm more of an Indiana Jones fan now. I collect all of the sets released to the general public. I have them all! No Brickmaster sets unless they are too good. The two that were made, Jungle crusier and SDCC exlusive, were not that great. High prices on BL too. :cry_sad: Also if any of you know where the SDCC review is please drop me a message with the link. You seem to have alot of themes in your list. Try sticking to one or two. Also if you plan on buying the whole theme like Star Wars don't get alot on one trip.

The same for me city, pirates, castle, ninja, classic town, WW...

I just don't know how the spending in moderation is going

Like KimT said, Star Wars. Also, the new pirate line is pretty good. What I do is mainly collect star wars and pirate lego. But sometimes I get different themes. But in your case, I think I would stick to one instead of getting everything.

Hope that helped.
