Duke Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) UPDATE IN POST 10 Over the last few weeks I began building this, the production being limited by brick orders not arriving. (I'm still waiting for a pick a brick ordered 3 weeks ago!) Here's how it's looking from the front at the moment, I wanted the appearance of growing out of rock, but also that spiral staircase which proved slightly tricky to incorporate. A view from the back, just experimenting with a cut away wall, that room won't necessarily be there but i'm happy with the interior. A better view of the room. Finally, some experimentation with torsos to make Aes Sedai. The one on the right is meant to be a novice in a curtsey position. I'm not sure how great the epaulettes look as shawl substitutes.. Anyway, advice/tips/criticism would be very welcome! I'm not going to be able to work on this for the next 5 weeks so i'd like to get lots of ideas ready to implement. Sandy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Wow, a very nice start! I'm absolutely loving the staircase! You should definitely keep the design of the room, but maybe move it further up the tower when you have the parts. I don't think having a bedroom right next to the lobby is a very smart idea... Maybe some sort of antechamber or study would be better for that spot? Or just make the entrance hall bigger. I'm not sure how great the epaulettes look as shawl substitutes.. They look militant. Not that bad, though... It comes in most of the colors of the Ajahs as well, except in green and grey. It's a shame that the scarf piece doesn't fit with most of the female hairpieces, because it would've been perfect. You could use the cloth-capes as well, they come in all sorts of colors. Quote
Guss Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 This is a very nice start, I love the spiral stairs and they're very well integrated, I can't wait to see more^^ Quote
AwesomeStar Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Thats a very nice WIP you've got going there., I especially love the spiral staircase, I wonder how thats possible? And that room is lovely! Can I live there??? Does it come with the women?! ~A.S. Quote
Sandy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 And that room is lovely! Can I live there??? Does it come with the women?! If you think you can woo the Aes Sedai (or any other female character in Robert Jordan's books), you're a complete fool. They'll tie your nutsack to a knot before you can say "Hey baby, how you doin'?". Quote
I Scream Clone Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Duke this is moving along nicely, you have managed to show the tower reaching out of the rock really well. Can't wait for the final product. Cheers If you think you can woo the Aes Sedai (or any other female character in Robert Jordan's books), you're a complete fool. They'll tie your nutsack to a knot before you can say "Hey baby, how you doin'?". Not to mention they are made of lego Quote
Duke Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 Thanks for the comments guys, just a quick note to say i'm back and have made quite a bit of progress with this over the last day or two. I've ordered some parts and found some techniques to employ from brickshelf. Photos of the basement and redone front of the ground floor will be up in a couple of days. Quote
Commodore Hornbricker Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Looks really good so far. I can't wait to see the update. Quote
Sir Dillon Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 While you were away I read the first three books in the series, so now I know what this is supposed to be. How much are you planning to build? I think no matter how big you make this, it will still be smaller than the tower is described. What you have so far looks good though. One suggestion would be to add some variation in the front where the rock meets the building. Right now those areas look too squared off to me. [edit] It seems you have already redone the front. I look forward to your updated pictures then. Quote
Duke Posted June 21, 2009 Author Posted June 21, 2009 Ok brickshelf has finally been moderated! Here is the overview as it stands. As you can see, an additional piece has been added over the stairs and the whole MOC stretches back further. Two rooms have been placed at the back on top, and these are removable. Removing those rooms reveals this: And below are close ups of the library, forgotten storeroom and kitchen respectively. Thats all for now, I hope you like the progress that has been made. The red tiles will be replaced with bley ones when I can get hold of some, and another cook will be helping in the kitchen hopefully. @ Sir Dillon - Glad to hear you read the first few books, great to hear someone else getting into them and those starting ones are some of the best. It's not going to be a realistic size, but I see it as a cross section of an area of the tower rather than the whole tower itself but at the same time in a traditional LEGO way it will encompass many aspects of the whole thing in a smaller area. I know what you mean about those rock areas at the front, and i've tried to tackle it slightly by raising it in a couple of places and putting some plants in as well.. I think it's an improvement but could still look better. Any advice and suggestions are appreciated! Quote
Matn Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 That's looking very good, Duke! I haven't read any of those books on which this White Tower is based, but I can say this is going to be very good. I like the interior so far, the porch and stairs look nice. But the thing that impresses be the most is the fantastic interior, you've done a great job on that. Those bookshelves are just awesome. Keep up the good work! Quote
Teddy Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 This is starting to look fantastic. I love what you've done with the furniture and interior. Great stuff. Can't wait to see the finished result. Do you have a picture of what it is supposed to look like? Quote
Sir Dillon Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 This is looking very good. I like the cutout approach you're taking. The area where the rock meets the tower base looks better. If you want more variation, I suggest replacing some of the lower white bricks with dark grey plates and bricks. The interiors are nice. I think the library should be less clean and open. Adding another table, shelf, desk or the like could help with that. I like the inclusion of the red arch in the storage room, and I think the room needs some more stuff other than barrels and boxes. One easy solution would be to add some minifigure accessories throughout. Keep up the nice work! Quote
Duke Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks for the futher comments, I have to say i've been lacking motivation to do more on this after my previous frenzy of activity . I don't have any pictures of what it's supposed to look like Teddy, a google search reveals how a few people have interpretted the appearance of the city generally but I have an image in mind of what i'd like the creation to look like. The plan is to add another floor above the additional ones on top of the library and kitchens which contain smaller rooms. This level will then have a roof aside from the 'tower' sections which can be seen sticking out at the front of the MOC, as they will be several floors higher hopefully.. Quote
