For those of you who follow me on [url=][/url[ you will notice multiple WIP shots I have uploaded of a massive (at least in my mind) Pirate town and ship. I started this projects with simply the ship and I decided it needed a little water, so I bought nearly 1,000 blue 1x2s. Then I decided any good ocean needs a town and began working on the town. This project I started in January now features, a ship, Governor house, basic house, soldiers fort, mountain, along with many other details. Anyway I have this project mostly completed excluding a little more minifig action that needs to be added and I thought I would finally go around with all the WIP shots I have to lets members see how the projects has evolved. Any feedback would be nice as well.

01.jpg

The bare basic of the ship with none of the sails or anything really added to it.

03.jpg

The ship alone it 3 feet tall and 3.5 feet long!

05.jpg

SlyOwl contributed to how the final look of the arches and how the rose out of the water looked.

06.jpg

The Soldier's Fort, the first building I completed.

07.jpg

The final WIP showing the two buildings and the work starting on the moutain.

And to end this little preview or WIP session I leave with a preview/teaser and a short description...

CIMG7355.jpg

"A rather new town featuring the latest guards also is under a terrible fate, Pirates! The have brought their large ship along the coast fully armed with cannons and blood thirsty Pirates. Now they fire the cannons and wreck havoc on the peaceful new town. Citizens and Soldiers alike take up arms ready to fight back and stop the Pirates from accessing their hoard under the mountain."

Also featured is a fierce looking Pirate Vessel known as the Polite Argument also accompanied by a smaller boat carrying Pirates to the shore to fight, loot, and destroy.

Thanks,

Zack

Looks absolutely terrific so far! You better be bringing this to Brickworld, Zack. Also, its wreak havoc, not wreck

This will be at BrickWorld assuming I can transport it. So far I haven't been able to get it off the table I started it on. :pir-sceptic: (Anyone know how to transport larger bases. All the buildings will be removed and reassembled in Chicago. I was thinking about sliding it onto a large wooden board and into the trunk of the car, but I can't say I'm exactly sure how.

I think the two buildings beneath the mountain are a little bit boring, maybe you should put some tools (guns, shovels) there and make the houses look more interesting. This is just a detail, for the rest, I really like that ship, nice colours and shape. And the soldiers'fort is also very nice to see. You spent a lot of money on the blue bricks, and with a fine result. In most MOC there are waves in the water, but you flat water reflects the bridge a little bit and that's also a great effect. I think you can make a very good town out of this, good luck :pir-classic:

Very nice port! I refuse to show mine until its done. And it won't be done by brickworld!

My main fort probably will be done though, so I might bring that.

I was aware of your new vessel since I've seen it already somewhere else.

But what I didn't know is that you were buliding a port along with it!

I agree with YnyklY about the water, some waves would give a nice effect. But this looks good too.

The buildings are nice to me, I only don't like the studded red roof, it looks a bit out of place. Tiling the roof would do a better job. The rest is perfect to me. I think the details come later on.

The fort is a nice first building, nice details in the walls and overall a nice shape.

The mountain starts being a masterpiece since it looks great already.

Keep this wonderful build up!

Good start! That mountain will look great! The recession of the bley road into the mountain is also nice. The mansion is coming along well, and I've always been a fan of those gates in conjunction with any Imperial-style building.

I also like the furled sails, although aren't they on the wrong side of the masts?

A few suggestions -

The masts are a bit close together on the ship - it looks kinda dumpy.

The bley rocks look a bit artificial, as they end so sharply on the harbour side. You could add an extra layer to make it flush with the wall, if you're going for the cut-away look. (Nice barrier :pir-wink: )

Keep it up and I look forawrd to the final piece

Wooden board works best. Slide it under the baseplates from behind first, then under the SNOT, to stop the SNOT breaking up as much.

Or, as the SNOT isn't attached to those bley rocks, you could remove the whole SNOT part from the main bit easily.

A few 1x2s here and there would give a tiled effect without the bulk parts/rebuilding.

Very well done, a good start indeed.

I am not an expert builder, so you better listen to people like SLyowl, Captain Green Hair, Blackmoor,....(although you are well under your way to become one yourself!)

A big  from me.

I guess I will have to make a few more BrickLink orders to pick up all the light blue and white plates I need then. I think my best example of waves or a crashing effect can be seen in my creation Stranded! And as for the buildings. I plan to have plenty of action going on. I have been considering weather or not I should put a hole or two through a building as if to give a nice cannon effect. If not there will still be plenty of minifigure action.

I'm gonna have to guess MOCPages when I posted a few WIP shots there and I remember your comment. I could tile it, but if you look closely you will see grill tiles and I hope to have a little minifig action on the roof as well. I see what I can do.

The sails will be fixed. That must have gone unnoticed. I wish I could spread the masts apart, but I ran out of mid-sections. I'll see what the average price for one on BrickLink is and I guess I'll have to buy some more plates to go along with it. As for the bley rock barrier I hope to extend it a little closer to the building.

I guess thanks to any of those that put up with this little list of mine and thanks to all those who gave criticism and any other form of feedback. :pir-tongue:

It was on MOCpages indeed, I saw it when I was lookin' for good MOCs but I knew you would post it yourself once. :pir-blush:

I've seen the grill tiles but I like the building's roof next to it better, it has a more piracy look.

As SlyOwl mentioned it is a good way to use both tiles and plates. I think it gives it the nice shabby pirate look.

It's a good way to bring action to your MOC, adding that makes it more attractive to look at.

Good luck with the build!

Does this mean I have to start showing the stuff I work on too?

Hmmmmm.....

It would certainly be inspirational to my project. :pir-grin:

Does anyone have tips as to how to photograph something of this size?

Posted

I have trouble with it as well since I have a port (not finished) too. I have put the whole structure on the ground and tried to photograph it in birds view, otherwise I need a very large clean background which I do not have.

I should take a few pictures in birds view or in a slightly different angle where the background doesn't distracts so much.

For close ups or for photographing a single building you can use white sheets of paper as background.

Hope that might help!

I know I have to pick up some more white posterboard since I don't think I have enough right now, but I just might. I do know that I will probably need more lamps to make all the sheets white though. If not I may start experimenting with colored backrounds. :pir-sceptic:

The water looks nice already, maybe you can leave it like it is now.

Promising, but a cannon hole on top of a mountain? :pir-sceptic: Or are the buildings at the bottom of the mountain? Then it would be a fine idea indeed. :pir-classic:

The buildings are at the bottom of the mountain. I'm still working on building up the mountain to make it larger, but I have run out of the bley tiles I was using.
