what does a 'friend' do

Today I received a message that someone added me as a friend but what is the advantage of this?

Don't get me wrong I like having friends but is there a nack to it in the forums or is just for fun.

Very unmanly I even used the search option and the help button but couldn't find an answer.

Please unlighten me.

I think that's right. I think when you try to send a PM, there is a box called 'Other' and this has all your friends in it. Other than that though, I'm not sure.
