For those who are undergoing BIG harbor projects, we all know how expensive blue basepleates are!

I tried calling LEGO, no go!

Does anyone have a good source for blue baseplates?

Maybe we should petitioning LEGO to start making them again?

I know 2 other solutions for water surfaces:

SNOT: (Stud Not On Top technique), it looks very realistic and you can make it even more realistic adding different colours

(light blue, dark blue, white) to it, it's also a nice way to add waves to the water.

The only problem is that it is quite heavy and it can break apart, plates don't.

Example

Tile: Just use a baseplate, colour doesn't matter, and add a large load of blue tiles on it. It is not that realistic as SNOT but more realistic then bare blue plates. Studs decrease realism. However, tiling the plates don't let it look like water that much, more like a floor with blue tiles on it. I also think this could be expensive too.

Example

My favorite solution is using SNOT, blue bricks are easy to get, they are cheap and the result is very realistic.

Hope this might help you out!

EDIT: examples added.

I appreciate the other angle. Unfortunetly, I am somewhat "committed" to doing it the difficult way. I just bought another 13 32 X 32 blue baseplates.

I already have about 20. Yeah, I know that is a lot of area. I'll put up pictures as progress continues!

20x 32x32 baseplates? :pir-oh3:

The project will be huge I think. I didn't know you were planning to build a project of this size.

The best way to cover such large areas are baseplates indeed. For smaller projects SNOT water is better.

It sounds very promising and I'm looking forward to the pictures!

Good luck on this gigantic project!

Well I might as well let the cat out of the bag. I am building the port I always wanted as a kid, trying to assimilate as many original sets into one port (and make it look right) as possible. I also planning on submitting to the design contests from here on out, and the adding my creations to this port, kinds like a showcase of my work?

It is big, very big.

Blue baseplates are indeedly expensive, and currently none are being made except perhaps for that teacher set...sad...

Well I dont know why we cant start calling LEGO and harrasing them? If they are serious about bringing the pirate line back, blue baseplates are a must. The only disturbing thing I have noticed about the new pirate line is that there are no baseplates at all. Anyone else find that odd?

The old pirates line had a lot of sets, the current line hasn't that much sets yet so perhaps there will be baseplates in the next round...

But I prefer the bottom of the current Soldier's fort instead of an island baseplate.

I know, eh? Would that not be amazing if LEGO actually sold these in blue?

I would probably buy four or five of them. It would be a glorious day indeed.

Anyone have any idea what the next build contest might be?

I prefer the ones where there are different sizes.

Did you phone the customer service and ask for 32x32 baseplates? If yes, it is not surprising that they said "no go" since those have been out of production for a while. Just phone again and ask for blue 16x32 baseplates. There are some in the Taj Mahal set, so there's a chance of getting them when phoning the customer service.

VERY VERY VERY good information!

I have found that when you call them, it makes it way easier to tell them what set it is in. I will see what I find. I have a big order to place with them in a week anyways. A VERY big thank you for that info!

When you've phoned them, let me now if it has worked and if you're getting the plates. But I'm pretty sure it'll work without any problems.

I won't be calling until next Thursday (big order), expect to hear from me then, ok?
