Kanal-K1 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 (edited) Hi friends, finally I have next of my most wanted 2009 sets in my nasty hands . I am working on a review, to be placed here until Sunday evening. As I hope, that you are, same like me, looking forward to see each new set, you can see photos of box, figs and first plane here on my forum Brickdome.cz. Now I am bit tired to build second plane, but, weekend is not finished yet, and until Sunday evening will be done! Maybe tomorrow, but, I go to visit St.Pölten Lego show... And, as always, sorry for poor photos, my camera is broken and handy is not ideal to make photos, but, still, better some, than no photos... 1. IMPRESS BEFORE I BOUGHT I knew I must have this set since first preliminary photos appeared at web. So, as soon as I had a chance to acquire, I got few pieces. 2. IMPRESS WHEN UNPACKED I was bit disappointed by new style of polybags numbering. I found in box two bags numbered 1 and two bags numbered 2, and meanwhile I thought, that I don´t have right parts to build the set. Just comparing color scheme of parts inside with instructions, I found, that both bags numbered 1 are for white plane, and both bags numbered 2 for gray plane. I cannot understand, why the bags aren´t simply numbered 1-4 like at most of other sets. Nice surprise was a stickersheet - finally I can build some BF109 3. IMPRESS DURING BUILDING This time seems, that TLC had thought carefully about construction. Both planes are much better constructed, than any Lego plane I built before (and I built nearly all issued). White plane I built 30 minutes, there are some easy SNOT constructions used in back part of plane and at rear gun nest made of motorcycle mudguards 50947. Gray plane has same building time, SNOT is used for engine exhausts strokes and in back part of the plane body. Building is quite easy, counted as 8+. 4. IMPRESS WHEN BUILT - LOOK I am excited by both planes, looking so realistic and massive. White one has length of 27 studs and wingspan 28 studs, gray one has length 34 studs and wingspan 36 studs..Indy has an old style biplane with double machine gun carriage behind rear seat. German pilot has a modern monoplane in nazi field-gray, with 4 guns in wings. Only one exception, that I have, as a WWII fan, is, that the gray plane is shaped more like US naval fighter, then as classic BF109 of FW190 5. IMPRESS WHEN BUILT - PLAYABILITY This set seems to be a classic dogfight reminiscence, what makes it attractive on its own. But, there are few tricks, making it even more playable. First - both planes has in instructions shown, that gun tubes should be "shot" outta plane with fingers. Frankly speaking, I don´t see the sense of this, as usually bullet, not barrel, is shot out from machine gun..Second, much better trick - if you press the back cabin glass on the grey plane, both wings fall down. This makes dogfight much more funny. 6. FINAL RESULT I don´t know RRP, guess it will be somewhere around 50 bucks, what makes this set quite attractive. Good playability, very nice look, WWII fan attractivity, no need to think any longer time, better go and buy few! First Lego fighter ever, where size of the plane is in accordance with fig! Kanal-K1 Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 yes exactly and I do not remember the other figure in the toy fair!! Oops! You are right, I built when parting out few 7622 sets to my BL shop, and one figure felt to the plane figs and I made a photo with...will correct.. Quote
simonjedi Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Question about the box: Is the bag Henry Jones SR holding a new mold? I can't remember seeing it Quote
ILikePi Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 (edited) Question about the box:Is the bag Henry Jones SR holding a new mold? I can't remember seeing it He's talking about the brown briefcase that Henry Jones SR is holding on the box art. It's this. It was a piece that was used from 1983 to now... legomilk Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 hi have you for my book numbers of the 7198 thanks Quote
The Who Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 yes exactly and I do not remember the other figure in the toy fair!! thanks anyway What is wrong with you? I mean really, somebody is trying to do a review for a set that's not released yet and all you can do is complain? I'm glad that Kanal-K1 is doing a reveiw, as it may or may not convince me to buy the set. And congrats Kanal-K1 for getting a fig with a brown mustache. Quote
Kanal-K1 Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 So, I returned from Austrian Lego show in St.Pölten and finally built-up remaining plane. I added photos to the link mentioned above and now I am following-up with translating review to English. Quote
ILikePi Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Thanks for taking time to review this not-yet-released set! I wouldn't buy it when it comes out, though. It's $50 USD, and it only has around 400 pieces. No new minfigures, too. Edited March 29, 2009 by ILikePi Quote
prateek Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 nice review for a nice set. im looking forward for this to come out here in canada Quote
soc399 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Thanks for the great review! I didn't think I would get this set, but your review makes it look pretty attractive. The flick fire missiles are lame, but the planes look great. Quote
Bricks Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Thanks for an so an fast review (I thought the first one will be in June...) This set looks better than I thought. I especially love the white plane, looks with the red-bricks really good. So all in all thanks for such a nice review. 'Bricks' Quote
jifel Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Tank you very much for the review. I must confess that I am surprised to see the Luftwaffe (spelling?) symbol on the planes, as Lego didnt put the swastika on the Flying wing. NOTE: I dont mean anything rascist with the above, it is simply history. jifel Quote

I was suprised, too. But I think such symbols are acceptable, if they would be swastikas...than such a set would be inacceptable. And these symbol isn't a relly racist symbol. Old kings from the Middle-Ages used them, too! By the way the ''Luftwaffe'' spelling is right 'Bricks' Quote

I thought that was what it was called, but isn't it supposed to be basically like the Iron Cross? Agree. I was suprised, too.But I think such symbols are acceptable, if they would be swastikas...than such a set would be inacceptable. And these symbol isn't a relly racist symbol. Old kings from the Middle-Ages used them, too! I don't take it as racist at all, but I would actually prefer any symbols, etc. be in sets for the sake of historical accuracy. I do understand why TLG cannot do that though. And originally Africans (I think) used the swastika as a sign of peace, as it rotated to the right. Then, the Fuhrer (spelling?) came along and reversed the rotation so as it spun to the left, the path of evil, etc., etc. I watch too much Hogan's Heros, I think. (And WWII documentaries) Quote
Zzz Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Swastikas on toys are forbidden in Germany and Austria. The symbol of the Luftwaffe is used in variations since 1914. Today it is just blue. So there is some difference. Thanks so far for the review, are you going to post pictures too? Quote
Batbrick Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Thanks for the review, I like this set a lot better now. I'll most likely get it, though it's still my least favourite if the new sets. But I didn't know that it came with four figs, one of which has a brown mustache and a tan hat, so that definitely makes me more eager to purchase it! Batbrick Away! Quote

Concerning Swastikas - at 7198 there are old WWI plane signs, nazi signs in WW II had been different - on wings it has been a straight black cross, and on the tail nazi symbol called "Hakenkreuz". I am quite sure, that I have seen in Austria and Germany plastic models with original signs, so how forbidden? Or, is it not called toy then? Frankly speaking, I don´t understand, why only nazi symbols are so strictly forbidden. Catholic church killed many people during medieval age, their sign is not forbidden. Soviet Union killed many people during 1917-1992, red star is not forbidden. Signs on its own are not dangerous, always just people behind...But, I am going too O/T. I already mentioned, that fourth fig is my mistake when making photos, it cames from 7622, in 7198 there are only 3.. Quote

Thanks anyway, though I would've been much more pumped for the set had it come with another figure. Batbrick Away! Quote
legoindy01 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 will you or anyone else be reviewing any other summer 2009 indiana jones sets? I really want to see the play features in ambush in cairo and chauchilla cemetery battle Quote
