DarthSion Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Not sure if its been asked before, tried to search but, umm searching doesn't seem to be very good on this site. Anyway, just curious why do you buy the theme(s) you buy?. If the nickname isn't a give away, i collect star wars sets, and only star wars, when i was a kid my family bought me pirates, castle, and city stuff, but not into them now. I buy star wars because i love star wars. Quote
AFOL SF Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 If you ask me, I like most of the themes TLC has released so far (that is from the 90s to the present). Why do I buy what I buy... I guess these sets tickle my fancy. Quote
Sandy Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I buy star wars because i love star wars. You must be joking... You want people to give you reasons why they buy certain themes, and that's all you can come up with? Well, here's another: I buy Castle because I love castles. Okay, I won't be a biatch... I mainly buy Castle-sets because I'm a huge fan of fantasy, and the new line definitely speaks to me. Quote
Dadster Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Castle for me (almost exclusively) since I like the time (and fantasy) period of knights, ghouls, swords, trolls, virtuous maidens, dragons, and treasure. My kids love it pretty much all, but I usually get them City (and SpongeBob). Quote
Algernon Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 (edited) I'm a Spacer at heart. I love the science fiction worlds that LEGO has created. They're loose enough to allow for imagination but interesting enough to have some kind of story. I also pick up other themes from time to time for my MOCs. I dislike Star Wars very much, however- don't confuse Spacer with SW. Edited March 6, 2009 by Algernon Quote
Eilif Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I buy alot of used lego and PAB, but when I buy sets, it's mostly buy Town and Indy. My main LEGO involvement right now is a LEGO train club (www.niltc) and Town and Indy have the most usefull minifig, parts and vehicles (when modified) for my Train Module, the town of "Brickington". I also buy some creator for the same reasons. I dabble in castle and pirates and Star Wars, but that's more because of nostalgia. Anything else is probably because it's on sale, or because of the uncontrolable impluse to buy cool looking LEGO. The new Space Police will probably fall into this catagory. Quote
indyj19 Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I buy (when i can spare some money) space and town/city mostly though some of the power miners stuff looks neat one of the first sets i got was a police helicopter with motorcycle and a value pack with a blacktron II space set i like pirates and trains too but somewhere along the way stopped buying them Quote
Ricecracker Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I'll buy any theme, but my main ones are City and belville (yes, belville). I buy City sets because I love building them, and I like building things that are actually around now. I also love machinery, cars, etc. I buy Belville for parts. Hell, I buy many themes for parts, every other theme than city, but I find belville to have better, more interesting and more rare parts. Like I said though, I buy sets from every theme. Every. Single. One (Except galidor and bionicle). Again, those are for parts though. Quote
legotrainfan Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I mainly collect city stuff. This includes train, and I also don't distinguish between town and city. I love creating real life scenes. I just want to have a huge layout as fans of modell trains have. I just want to make a splendid town with as many details as possible. I also like castle, pirates, and space, but they are just a marginal aspect of my LEGO interests. Yet I do buy a set of those themes from time to time. I think those themes are ideal if you are imaginative. Just create adventures around the pirates and knights. Build adventurous scenes! Or travel to other planets in space and boldly go where no one has gone before! And that's what LEGO is all about: imagination! I almot never play with the sets I own. My layouts are usually static apart from the trains moving around. The real action happens in my brain. When I've completed a layout, I imagine how everything's alife in the city, space station, pirate ship, and castle. Layouts are just wonderful to look at. Quote
-JD- Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 My two main themes are castle and SW. I love SW because the movies were amazing and I was at the right age as a child to appreciate them. Then the SW LEGO sets came out. Then I lost all sense of control and have bought as many SW sets from 2002 onwards as I could. The minifigs are the highlight for me because they have this thing about them which I don't know how to explain. The accuracy to the characters from the movies is excellent. The ships are just so awesome! The little easter eggs here and there in the sets is great as well. Sometimes I have no idea they are there, and I figure it out eventually. Castle just reminds me of LOTR 1,2 and 3, which are great books and movies. The minifigs and castles etc just look so cute to me. JD Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I buy some of most themes, Indy to go with my old favourite (Adventurers) Castle every now and then because I like history and as a child went to every castle in South Wales... My last most bought theme was Exo-Force as I adore mecha and love to build them and my new theme is Agents due to how fun it is. I love making space ships and SF cars, and things like that but in the end I just love Lego and will buy all of the "system" sets that take my fancy. It's hard to pin down a reason for my favourite themes when I have been buying/asking for lego since 1995... Quote
DarthSion Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 Some interesting replies, with the exception of one. Although I'm surprised mini figures didn't seem to play much of a role, seems most people in the SW section only buy a set based on the mini's. JammyDodger wasn't that the boat in flushed away. Quote
Erdbeereis Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Some interesting replies, with the exception of one. Ouch. I really enjoy everything, but I'll just cover my favorites. Pirates, because I find that they have a lot of great parts that are useful for the type of MOCs I like to make, plus I love the Imperial Soldier minifigs, among other things. Indiana Jones because I love the adventure aspect of the line, and the sets always appeal to me. They also contain excellent parts, often in harder to find colors like dark green. Star Wars, I don't really like Star Wars for MOCing pieces as they often contain quite a bit of Technic, but I have always liked Star Wars and I enjoy seeing things from the movies brought into LEGO form. Agents because of the fun minifigs, interesting sets and unique pieces. And finally, City because when I think of LEGO, I think of City. To me it's the classic LEGO feel. Of course, these are just a few lines that I enjoy. There's hardly a LEGO line that I'm not a fan of. Quote
TLV Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Castle is my first love and always will be. Classic-castle forever! I do have some town, western, pirates and star wars stuff too. I also collect some star wars sets here and there but not as intensive as my castle collecting. I'm a star wars fan after all and if you are both a lego and star wars fan its hard to resist buying star wars lego. Also got back to collecting pirates recently after TLG re-released the pirates theme. One good thing about the pirate theme is that some of its stuff such as ships and minifigs can be interchanged with the castle theme and vice versa. Hence I can expand both themes together. Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 You must be joking... You want people to give you reasons why they buy certain themes, and that's all you can come up with?Well, here's another: I buy Castle because I love castles. Okay, I won't be a biatch... I mainly buy Castle-sets because I'm a huge fan of fantasy, and the new line definitely speaks to me. I dunno... buying Star Wars because you like Star Wars certainly seems like a good reason to me. Nothin' to make one a biatch there. I buy sets for parts I see I can moc with... themes literally mean NOTHING to me. Last year, I was buying Bionicle sets for new Technic fists, that robot mocs may finally have Transformers-like hands. I bought Agents, for the straight minifig arm pieces to make... oh, I'll be damned... robot hands again! ...but on minifigs. : p Agents again, for 10 brick high support beams (actually, just went to Bricklink instead and grabbed some version 1's of that part. I HATE version 3!) Yeah, it all comes down to parts, which is why I hit Bricklink more and more often. I do buy sets though. You know how it is... you're in Walmart, you got a couple bucks to spare... and there's some Power Miners with nice lime parts never done before... there's Star Wars with a $10 (well, now $12) set that has 4 or so blasters in it, there's Bionicle with nice trans wings with a prismatic effect or glow in the dark... Parts parts parts. If they carried Belville at Walmart, I'm SURE they'd have parts that would warrant purchase for me as well. What sets I buy largely rely on what mocs I have in my head at the moment. Quote
hewkii9 Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I buy Castle because I like medieval things and building Castle. I bought Exo-Force because I loved the purple hair and the torsos were good for purist BSG figs. I'll buy Gents because they look pretty darn sweet. Also I want brown Trace hair. I bought X-pods because I loved those parts packs. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 JammyDodger wasn't that the boat in flushed away. Jammy Dodgers they make them not five miles from me, I work less than a mile away from the factory and they make everywhere smell wonderfull all day. (Sorry for the off topic post, but those buscuits are the best.) Quote
DarthSion Posted March 8, 2009 Author Posted March 8, 2009 Ah well the boat was probably named after the cookies. Quote
5150 Lego Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I'll by anything that sparksmy interest. Cars (well, vehicles in general) have always been a pasion, so themes that heavy focus around vehicles are the ones that i ussualy pick up. Functions are also on the top of my list. Technic sets are #1 for me. That said, i also preffer modern vehicles as aposed to "fantasy" based vehicles such as the Agents vehicles. Although the vehicles in the indie line are not modern, they are based on real vehicles, so i've grown found of a few of those sets as well. Quote
Raphy Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 My absolute fave theme is Racers. I think most poeple think it's a childish theme, but they have very nice parts and above all the design in simply awesome. Besides I'm working on a comic series called Supercharged (that's probably what it'll be called) and Tiny Turbos (my favorite) have a very big part in it, with minifigs. (Yes I believe that minifig scale is either 6 or 4-wide ) But overall I like Tiny Turbos because they are SO DARN CUTE!! I also enjoy other unpopular themes such as Technic and Creator, although I won't spend my money on Technic. Creator is my limit I hate themes like Bionicle, although I have to give it to them that that's the theme (say that 5 times fast!) that brought lego back to life, so I have to give them credit. I also rather dislike Castle and Star Wars, not because they have bad design, but because they are so popular they just drown out all my other themes. However I'm not overly active on Eurobricks, I prefer flickr, where I have a whole bunch of friends that are as freaked about cars as I am :skull: :skull: ...... And I'm also in the LUGnuts group. On flickr the lego car popularity is much larger than on Eurobricks and Brickset ;) And did I mention nice but clogged mocpages, filled with h4l0 n00bs and CLONE WARS!!!!!!!!1!!!1!!! freaks? Thanks, I prefer flickr.... Oh well that pretty much wraps it up ;) I'm also rather attracted to Power Miners and Agents, although I haven't bought any sets of theirs yet Quote
CommanderCody77 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Well I mainly buy Star Wars, Pirates, Castle and sometimes City and Agents Quote
Millacol88 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I mainly collect the "big 3": Star Wars, Castle and Pirates. I just think those are the themes that are the most interesting and well-designed. The minifigures of all three are great too. Quote
blueandwhite Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I'm not really theme-specific when it comes to my purchasing habits. While I build almost exclusively castle-related MOCs, I simply buy sets that appeal to me as sets (UCS Falcon, Corner Cafe etc.) or sets that provide a great source of building materials. I'd rather focus on what I feel to be high-quality sets rather than completing a specific line. Almost every line has something worthwhile. Quote

Algernon Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Aren't the big three City, Castle, and Pirates? Not really, the big three are City, Castle, and Space, since Space has had a far more abundant run than Pirates. Quote
