WhiteHexagon Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 How do people recommend to transport my village. I've got 13 buildings over around 25 baseplates. Should I just dismantle the whole thing? or use a packing box per model? I'm mostly worried about damage, but also all the pieces getting mixed up. On the over hand I'm being charged by volume for transportation. Any tips? Quote

You can pack all the bags in a couple of boxes. Quote
Derek Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 That would be a good idea. You could also take a few pictures of each of the buildings and stick them in the baggies so you better remember what they looked like. Or if you wanted to take a chance, you could get a big box, lay them on the bottom, rely on packing peanuts and bubble wrap, and hope for the best.... Quote
united brick Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I would inquire buble rap and ziplocking just the buildings watch out for the roads though Quote
CP5670 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Are you going to be transporting them yourself or sending them through a shipping service? I moved two years ago and brought my entire Lego collection with me in numerous plastic storage boxes, without disassembling anything, although I had to do it in two installments. I took off some parts of models that seemed likely to fall off, like antennas or other things that were jutting out, but apart from that everything stayed together perfectly fine. However, if you're shipping it, you may have to take apart most of the models. The shipping costs will probably become huge if you try to ship everything assembled. Are they official sets or your own MOCs? Quote
RyDub Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 if you have to dissemble anything then why not try to make an illustration or manual to how to rebuild it like you would get with buying a lego set Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Thanks for the great feedback. It's a mixture of MOCs and a few of the the bigger builds like CC, market and the other one I always forget the name of. Anyway, I like the idea for ziplocks and bubble wrap, but the volume is a concern. I'm paying by m3 for transport so I need to keep the volume reasonable. Maybe I'll fill each of the buildings with the deco from the street level, ie minifigs, lamposts, cars etc. The would save some space and maybe with some padding in there I wouldn't be wasting too much space. Good tip to remove all the sticky out bits! I guess they would be the first to snap/fall off. I'm a bit nervous about the move, last time I moved I only had a few buildings and so it was a non issue, but now I know there's alot of hours build time gone into this. On the other hand it's ready for a really good clean and reorganisation so maybe the move will turn into a positive thing. Now that I think about it I'll do some before and after shots! Although I suspect it's gonna take quite some time to get it all assembled nice again. Quote

I wish you good luck with moving, and don´t worry... if your layout becomes a little disarranged, you can always turn it into some nifty post-apocalyptic diorama... Quote

Minifig Lecturer Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Good luck with it. Are you moving far or within the same city? Hopefully you new place has more space for your collection either way. Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted March 3, 2009 Author Posted March 3, 2009 Good luck with it. Are you moving far or within the same city? Hopefully you new place has more space for your collection either way. Switzerland to Finland, and so far I haven't worked out where the Lego is gonna be. My new place is quite a bit smaller, but does include an unused loft space that might just become Logoville part II  Progress so far attached. It was quite tough dismantling all that hard work, but I know I'm gonna have fun rebuilding it  All the buildings are full of bricks, so next job, bubble wrap, after the mandatory 10mins of popping the bubbles! I'm gonna leave the buidling base plates attached and sit them at the bottom of the boxes. Then bury them in clothes and other light packing stuff. Quote
