Natman8000 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) In many MOCs now a days I see that people are able to make these wonderful and sleek mountains, cliffs or rock formations. I'm just wondering if anybody has any good techniques to building them. Also, do you have any method for making vines on rock forms, that dont use the vine piece. The only good one I know is this . I Scream Clone Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 To answer your first question, I tend to use a lot of other coloured bricks and burps underneath my mountains. Then build up on the outside with lots of 1 x 2 slopes of different sizes. Its all freestyle for me, with only a general idea of where I will end up. Warning it takes a LOT of bricks to build even the smallest of hills. I also favor cheese slopes to smooth the whole look off when finished too. Quote
Darth Yoda Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Ahh, this is what I'm best at... Lego rock are awesome. What I do, is use ridiculous amounts of slopes, and fill in with colored bricks...As for the vines, just stick a 1x1 brick into your rocks and put the vine in it... Hope that helped. Quote
Matteo Kenobi Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Rocky Walls and mountains were never my strong point and I have overall tried to avoid using them due to my lack of skill, however they look so great. I guess you could say I have a mountain deficiency or something If someone could be so kind to create a tutorial or let me know if there is one already written that would be great, haha I'm sure it will help a lot of us whose strengths aren't in the mountain area. Joebot Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 In my opinion, the most important part is to NOT create repeating patterns in the rock face. If you're using BURPs, it's easy to get lazy and simply stack the BURPs next to each other, then fill in the various gaps. That creates a very repetitve look, which is not at all natural or "organic" looking. The real trick is to randomly stagger the BURPs. Its all freestyle for me, with only a general idea of where I will end up. Warning it takes a LOT of bricks to build even the smallest of hills. Totally agreed on both points! I tend to use lots of 2x4 bricks rather than slopes, which gives the hills a "chunky" appearance that I rather like. But yeah, I just start building with no real sense of what it's going to look like at the end. Quote
simonwillems Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Nice topic! When I make a rockformation I use the 'between-love-and-hate rockpieces' Lego provides us with, using this piece and this one, commonly called Little Ugly Rock Piece (LURP) and Big Ugly Rock Piece (BURP). Even on Bricklink.... Using this pieces and a lot of big and small plant leaves and vines like this whip/vine piece, you get a pretty rough looking formation and not as smooth as when building with slopes. Some examples can be seen here and here. Behind the rockpieces and underneath the elevated layout you can build anything you like to support your layout above, I mostly use technic beams, but also large pieces which I do not use so much like batteryboxes, big monorailsupports and the like are coming in very handy, example here. Good luck! Quote

That creates a very repetitve look, which is not at all natural or "organic" looking. The real trick is to randomly stagger the BURPs. This is exactly what I think. I recently made a large cliff, and in some points where I staggered the BURPS and LURPS and filled in some of the gaps it looks realistic, and at others where the pattern is more uniform, it looks uneven. I'm going to go back and revisit the cliff and try and use the above principles more thouroughly. In all honesty BUPPS and LURPS are not the most realistic ways to create cliffs, but when you need to make large clifflines it's a great way to conserve time/bricks/money. Quote
Algernon Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) It's so hard to take this conversation seriously with all the silly acronyms. BURPs and SNOT, oh my! Edited February 23, 2009 by Algernon Quote
SeaKing61 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 When making mountains I tend to start with a molehill and work from there! In all seriousness I'm thinking about elevating my town and adding some hills so this is a useful topic, thanks Laurie Quote
Norro Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I put a lot of work into mine. Plan carefully. You can take a look at my MOCs (link in sig). As a lot of them are landscaped based... My most recent is *just* a mountain... God Bless, Nathan Quote
