:hmpf_bad: I'd like to take the sword and hit Max over the head with its flat side.

So I get assaulted for asking questions about your father. How homicidaly intersting.

As it seems they want to bet me over the head for a little tune, I'll just...stand by you.

You know, I am wondering why many who are here are here.

Michael takes a look under the square of carpet, but does not find anything. He also inspects the white hanging light. You do not find anything, however you do notice that there is a big dent in the bit pointing down.

Max takes another loo in the chimney, but it seems he has already found all there is to find.

Peter decides to make a careful search of the walls, starting at the sideboard. Lord Dragonator asks that you does not move all the furniture around to much, however you may look behind it. You do not find anything behind the sideboard, so you start working your way anti-clockwise around the room. The east wall does not offer any clues, so you move on the to north wall, looking into each niche in the wall. You do not find anything until you approach the second to last one, the niche with the statue in it close to the west wall. Here you find that you can feel a slight breeze, or so you think. You try moving the suit of armour aside, and find that it slides quite smoothly. The wall appears normal, however with the suit of armour out of the way you can see that half-way up there is a circular hole in the wall, that would have been hidden by the body of the armour. The hole is about 2 inches deep and 8 inches in diameter, and the bottom is carved with the Dragon Seal. You also note that floorboards are rather scuffed around the base of this bit of wall.

Miss Sandy meanwhile is examining the fireplace. After a thorough search she comes to the conclusion that there is nothing else hidden in it...

I would prefer if we tried not to incite any violence Mr. Dunne. Remember that violence is not always the answer to your anger. :classic:

...Actually I mainly just don't want you to dent the antique sword, but feel free to hit him with something else.

You know, I am wondering why many who are here are here.

I'm sure you all have your reasons for wanting to see if Lord Chester is truly dead. Whether they be good or bad reasons, I don't know.

The Chef takes a look in the "hole" but does not see anything else of interest except for the DragonSeal carved in the bottom. Max tries pushing it, but it does not move.

I'll examine the dent on the lamp more closely. Is it at head level?

Approximately yes, it is in the ornamental piece of white-painted metal pointing downwards under the actual bulb.

I would like to see if my half of key fits into the seal in the hole.

Max tries putting his half-key in the hole. It fits into one side very nicely, when the raised pattern on the half-disc is lined up with the grooves carved into the bottom of the hole.

Clearly we need the other half of that disc, so let's look under everything, especially the round things. I'll start with the barrel, work my way to the coasters, then the tray and various tables.

The tray isn't round. :hmpf:

Your face isn't round, either.

Peter makes a search of the room for the other half of the disc, but this does not give any results. Lord Dragonator however has something to say.

I have been thinking about this word-puzzle for a while now, and I think I might be able to help. Clearly to solve it you must rearrange the letters, and there is some sort of pattern to that. By co-incidence, I think the first and last letter of each sentence is in the correct place. Also, I am guessing that this puzzle will tell us where the other half of Max's key is.

Okay, so the second word is not chimney. The first word, I imagine, is "the". The first word in the second sentence could be "look".

Must I do everything myself. :hmpf:

I have continued to think on this, and I think I have discovered a bit more. It seems to me that if there are 60 letters exactly in the sentence, then perhaps we need to split the whole thing into sections to read what we want? I don't know, it could work... (come on guys, if you don't get this soon then I'll have to give it too you, because we can't proceed until you do. Where's Anthony when we need him!)

But that's what I've been trying to do! I've put the letters in groups of thirty, twenty, ten, six, and three, and no matter which way I read it, nothing sensible comes out of it.

I'm sorry to let you down, but the logic of this puzzle just doesn't open to me...

(That's all right, thanks for trying, you guys did get pretty close, especially you. :classic: )

Perhaps you should try 15. Since we need to move on I may as well help out with this one. This style of "picket fence" problem requires the letters to be split into 4 groups, or so I understand. I think I must have read it somewhere.

Now see what you get.

(I can give a full explanation of how to solve this one later if you like.)

What are you, some kind of freaking boy scout? :hmpf:

(That's all right, thanks for trying, you guys did get pretty close, especially you. :classic: )

It says, "Dragonator has chronic fire-breathing halitosis and already knows who killed Chester and will probably kill all of us at the end."

No, wait, that was 14. Let me try again...

The ballroom chairs hold more than just people. Look under to find the key.

I'd like to go look under the ballroom chairs and get that damn key, finally. Then I'd like to point left while faking right, grab Max's half of the key, put them together and run in and open the secret whatever-it-is! HA!

There's a lad, now he's getting it!

Yeah, knew he had it in him.

Thanks, guys.

Phew, finally!

I also can't believe I didn't try fifteen... :hmpf:

But yay, what could the secret be? *jumps up and down giddily*

I tried that as well but never went for the number of 15. I'm afraid your logic was a little too random on this one... :sceptic:

You'll get an explanation later.

The group returns to the Ballroom, where Peter looks under the chairs. Sure enough, there is a hollowed out space under the right one with the other half of the "key" in it. Putting them together, the group returns to the Parlour and puts the key into the hole in the wall. A sharp click is heard as it settles in place. Turning it anti clockwise, you here a scraping sound and the wall begins to swing inwards...

What awaits on the other side of the door? Will the detectives ever find Lord Chester, dead or alive? You'll just have to wait till next time, won't you...

Not much I can really say to that.

Um, please?

*does the "I solved the damn puzzle dance" in the closed thread, just because he can*

Oh, and it was a lame code. I'd tried a Caesar early on, which is more traditionally broken into a square. In this case, it would have been an 8x8 with extra letters added for confusions sake.

I'd also add that it's more properly called a rail code, not picket fence.

Have I pooped on this enough? Ok, I'm done.
