I've got a ton of old sets I had growing up (late 70s to early 90s) and a little over a year ago I came out of my dark ages and starting buying new lego. The thing is I wouldn't dare mix my old pieces with the new ones, they're not in that bad of condition, but it's enough for me to not want to pollute my new lego with them.

Selling them would help purchase new sets (Cafe Corner, ) but I still have a certain attachment to those old sets and then on the other hand I know I'll never use them again, perhaps only to hand down to my children in the future.

What have most of you done? Should I sell up and trade them in for newer models? :P or should I keep them all? or should I sell some and keep my favourites? I'm not even sure what they're worth really?

These are most of the sets I have, compiled from Peeron, most of these are complete, maybe a couple are missing one or two pieces.

And finally if I was to sell some or all of these, which would be my best bet? Bricklink? Ebay? Just posting on here?

Wow, you have a lot of good stuff there! I am sure if you wanted to sell any of these, you wouldn't have any problems finding buyers, either here or on ebay. Hint hint!

If you don't have to sell everything, why not keep a certain proportion? Maybe a great set from every theme, or just the ones you have particularly strong nostalgic feelings for?

It can be hard to know where to draw the line. When I first came out of my dark ages and was sorting through my childhood stash, one of the first things I did was get rid of all my Fabuland. Aaargh! Little did I know I would end up in a community where Fabuland figures are revered as minor gods! The thing is, every Lego piece can be re-used in some way and you never know what might come in handy. That's why it's so hard to get rid of!

As for selling... it depends on whether you want to shift the collection quickly or would rather maximise your profit.

Bricklink's prices are higher; you do pay fees but you also can set the exact price you want and if you're patient and not unreasonable, someone will pay it.

With Ebay in Australia you basically pay 2 sets of fees - listing and PayPal since in my experience most buyers now prefer the latter method. Hence all the hoo-ha last year with supposedly making PayPal *the* compulsory method; I doubt ebay thought they'd ever get the change through the ACCC, but it worked well as a scare campaign for new buyers (only PayPal is safe!) and it looked like ebay backed down when really they got exactly what they wanted, ie PayPal in every listing. The advantage of ebay is that you are exposing your product to a much bigger potential buying public. However unless you have fixed prices you can't really control the end-price. Maybe you'll be lucky; maybe not. You have to also put a lot of work in taking accurate pictures, submitting the listings, calculating postage for boxed items etc. Also choose your time to sell wisely - to be honest, post Christmas and just when the new sets have come out is not the best time to sell as the market is flooded with old sale items and new exciting products.

If you sell here, you need a certain number of posts to do so - read the guidelines in the Buy, Sell and Trade forum for more info. You don't pay fees here but it may be a bit slower if, for example, you decide you're only selling to other Aussies to avoid the hassle of posting internationally.

I would vote against selling your current collection. Your old sets probably have sentimental value.

Maybe integrate them as an "old" part of town.

I understand your problem and I'm currently experiencing it too.

I've recently come out of my dark ages after seeing the new Castle line. Then I decided to dig up my old LEGO. After buying a few sets recently, I know that I don't want to mix my old, yellowy, badly maintained LEGO. So, using only these old stuff, I built a few structures and a few stuff that I would integrate with my newly purchased sets. Thus, relieving the dilemma of thinking about selling my old collection for new ones.

I don't have or plan to have a town layout so that doesn't really bother me, I like buying new sets for what they are end up using any new lego for MOCs, which often don't last more than a couple of days before being dismantled for the next creation.

I'd suggest selling some of the older sets you aren't that attached to and keeping the ones you like the most; that way you can still finance at least some of your new purchases. I had trouble mixing in my old sets too when parting out all of my old and new sets by color, but I eventually created an old gray pile and a new bley pile (along with the other color changes, the less noticeable ones I just went ahead and mixed and now can't tell the difference  ). When I do MOC's I tend to steer clear of the older version colors anyways unless it's to add variety in castle walls, etc.

I'm in the same situation as you. I have around 30 sets mostly from the late 80s/early 90s period (a few are in your list, in fact), which have been well used and are in decent but not great condition now. I never mixed them with my more recent collection. I actually ended up getting new copies of many of them from ebay over the last few years, but there are some remaining sets that would be impractical to replace like this due to the high costs.

I was planning to sell mine on ebay last year, but never had time to set up the auctions and everything. The fact that the ebay rules have become heavily loaded against sellers in the last few years hasn't helped either (increase in fees, sellers can only post positive feedback, etc.). Bricklink or EB may be better options.

Well this is a hard decision for you to make. I will suggest that you should keep the ones you really like the best and sell the ones that you don't really like that much.

Personally, i would never sell my old sets. i have a very hard time letting go of things from my childhood. also, i feel that some of the sets of yesteryear are infinitly better than what is available now, which much more variety. my dream since i was litle was to have a big enough house wherein i could set up all my sets, ie have a whole town section, a whole castle section, a whole divers section, space section, etc etc. even if someone offered me millions i dont know if id be able to sell my LEGO. i feel like theres a personal connection and id be betraying them if they were no longer in my possession

I wouldn't. You might end up regretting it later. You could keep it for you kids, if you ever plan on having any, or do. My parents always tell me they wish my grandparents kept their childhood toys.

NO! That is the answer you are looking for.

*calms down and grabs a cigarette*--------- REMEMBER! SMOKING IS HAZARDOUS FOR YOUR HEALTH.

I also have a huge number of classic era sets (mid 80's - early 90's),all of them bought at that time (important factor for me) and i can't even think of it as a joke of selling one of those. The thing is that every set i have had been bought because i liked it (so, no random gift sets or sets that ended up in my hands by "accident") .

If you are attached with every one of those, don't sell anything. This is your Lego history, your Lego timeline.

You 'll have chances of buying new sets in the future. Maybe even some old sets from E-bay or Bricklink. But not the ones.

If you use your Lego for MOCs you should be BUYING those old sets, not selling them! I'm sure you can use all those old parts very well.

2 of these sets I can't use for MOCs as they have stickers applied and I don't want to pull them apart for fear of ruining the stickers, they're actually the last couple I bought before dark ages, so they're in excellent condition still and fully assembled.

Would anyone here be interested in either of these? and want to make an offer? I can provide photos if needed
