oDDerFisken Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Ahoy everyone. I've started to build this ship, which I think will be called "The Dead Captain" Anyways here are som pics from the work. Some of them are not so great, but since this is only a teaser for the finished ship I didn't think it was important that all of the pics was 100% perfect. Update April 5 2009 The folder Update 1/15-09 Please tell me what you think of my progress. Enjoy And here we have The Dead Captain himself Original pictures Here's my test-guy. He has a great overlook from up here. The white thing is a skull The inside of the cabin. Maybe some furniture would be a good idea? IT's possible to remove the mid-section of ship to get down to the lower gundeck. I've stolen this part of the ship from SES. I think it's a very nice ship and the way the cannons are able to move in it is great. All together there's 12 cannons at this point. There's also two chasers in the back. of the ship There's no crew yet, but they will come soon I'm sure. Comments and ideas are appreciated. Thanks for watching Edited April 5, 2009 by oDDerFisken Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Not bad!! You need a name you said, I see it's a pirate ship. I'm not good at names but I think "Sea Angel" or "Golden Angel". My favorite part is the stern, which looks pretty cool with the inverted slopes. The green windows are splatting out of it. I can also see the SES had some influence on the design and colours. The colour sheme looks great and you have a large cabin, which I like. An improvement may be to build some railings on the forcastle. It's just a flat deck where people will fall off. You have some work on the rigging to do as well. Great ship till now! Quote
oDDerFisken Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 An improvement may be to build some railings on the forcastle. It's just a flat deck where people will fall off. Hahah.. I know. But as said this is a work in progress. And I've also started to build some railings on the forcastle now. Be patient You have some work on the rigging to do as well. I know.. thats the difficult part I think. Great ship till now! I'm glad you like it. And yes the colourscheme is heavely influenced by the SES . I've dropped the white parts though. Instead I've put some more grey there. I think It's better this way. Four "maincolours" is too much I think. I've only got three. And some green to make it colourfull. Quote
RocketSeason Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Good work so far. I will be looking forward to seeing more. Quote
Paul cantu Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 This is a great ship and has really good details. I like the size and the cannons on both decks. The classic color scheme is nice. My only improvement is to change the yellow windows to white or another one of your main colors. Quote
oDDerFisken Posted January 10, 2009 Author Posted January 10, 2009 My only improvement is to change the yellow windows to white or another one of your main colors.I'd say you're right, but unfortunately I haven't got any winows in other colours So unless a couple of right-coloured-windows just drop down from heaven I'm not able to change them to some that fits better with the colourscheme.By the way I think I will call the ship "The Dead Captain".. story will follow.. Al7 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Not bad, still there are too many squares in a very short space for such a huge deck, my opinon you should care more about the detail and remove squares but keep going it looks great well done ! Quote

Well thank you.I'm working on the squares but some of them are hard to eliminate 'caus I'd like to be able to remove the midsection to look down on lower gundeck. I've made the forcastle now. Twice actually I didn't think the first one worked out. And the front is way more detailed. Also I've added some furniture in the captains cabin. Now it almost look inhabitated I think I'll upload some updated pictures tomorrow. Quote
oDDerFisken Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 (edited) I've updated with some new pics. Hope you like them. Please comment and tell me how you like it. And btw here's the folder.. when public. I'm aware of my doublepost, but if I do not make a new post in the thread no one will see that there's new pics. Edited January 15, 2009 by oDDerFisken Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I see you've done some improvements! The forecastle has some railings now so nobody will fall off anymore. You've also added a figurehead which looks pretty cool. Quote
Ratshot Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 This is a really nice ship, but the colors look really odd, they just don't go together. But for a name I would wait till it is done and a crew has been placed on board. Quote
SlyOwl Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 The Dead Captain, eh? Good start! It's nice to see the SES system in use in a MOC. The cat-head is cute The detail at the prow and the stern windows are great. What's really bugging me is that the rear mast is a bit tall compared to the others. I don't really like the red/grey stripe on the poop deck - it clashes rather. Perhaps remove the grey from the stripe, and leave it as red. It's also quite a solid looking wall. Could you put in some arches? Or some "ribs" like on the side of the ship? Tiles on their side with technic bricks and half pins would give less bulky ribs. I see you're planning to use one of those tubs as a crow's nest. You could put a standard "top mast" (bowsprit on BSB and SES) into it, thus continuing the mast upwards, without the overlap that you've got in the middle mast at the moment. It may be quite weak, but if you use one of the new-style tubs, you could put a bar through the top of one mast, through the axle hole, and into the bottom of the next mast. It may need a bit of experimentation, as I'm not sure how well it would work. In this picture, whilst I see it's the photo that's the problem, I really like the white/pearl-red combination Quote
oDDerFisken Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 (edited) The Dead Captain, eh? Aye! The cat-head is cute Cat-head? What cat-head? What's really bugging me is that the rear mast is a bit tall compared to the others. So you think I should lower it? I just though it'll look better if it was this tall.. With the mast given by LEGO there's not that many opportunities of hieght when building masts. I've also thought of making it possible ti climb up the mast by a rope ladder. Could you please explain to me what the "poop deck" is? I've also considered to remake the "wall". It's very solid as it is now. But I also want it to do some protection if someone is shooting at the firstmate or anyone else at the bridge. But I'm gonna try to make it a bit less solid. In this picture, whilst I see it's the photo that's the problem, I really like the white/pearl-red combination I'm sorry to disappoint you. It's just because of the flash on the cam that it looks like that. It's just regular red and grey. I'm glad you like (some of) it Broadside: Why would you wait givin' it a name till there's a crew? Cap'n Blackmoor: I'm glad you like the improvements. It was about time that I made the forecastle.. someone could have get hurt Edited January 15, 2009 by oDDerFisken Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Looks ok so far. Can you take a picture of the full ship, with the entire masts? It's hard to tell if the mast height is correct from these. Quote
SlyOwl Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Cat-head? What cat-head? The thing which holds the anchor out from the side of the ship So you think I should lower it? I just though it'll look better if it was this tall.. With the mast given by LEGO there's not that many opportunities of hieght when building masts.I've also thought of making it possible ti climb up the mast by a rope ladder. Maybe miss out the middle section. I guess it depends on what sail you're going to have at the back. If it's a normal jib sail like on the SES, then I'd make it shorter, but otherwise probably not (I only really posted that because I was going to say that it was silly that the middle mast was shorter than the front mast, but then I saw the mast extension I didn't want to delete those 10 typed letters! ). Could you please explain to me what the "poop deck" is?I've also considered to remake the "wall". It's very solid as it is now. I'm not very clued-up on the parts of a ship. The raised thing at the back Quote
AND3RSEN Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 The poop deck is the deck that is situated above or on top of the cabins roof (better explained here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poop_deck the forecastle is basically the raised part at the bow (front) of the ship. (also, better explained here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forecastle I learned this from a fantastic book about a man-o-war, by Steven Biesty. About your MOC, i love it! the only thing that bothers me, is the poop deck is a tad bare, mabye put a barrel or two up there. otherwise, great job! Quote

I know most of the ship is a bit bare but I'm not at all done with it yet. It's still only a WIP, and normally I'd put the crew and the barrels and such in the very end. So be pacient! It will come. SlyOwl: thank fo rthe explaination. Now we both agree what we're talking about - which normally is a good thing. Capt'n Greenhair: I'll make sure that you get a picture of the entire ship next time I upload some pics. Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Can't wait till the next update. Good thing is to learn a lot about a ship so you know what to build. Are your sails going to be from cloth, paper or something else? And are you going to do some real-rope-rigging like Captain Green Hair does? I'm curious! Quote

Are your sails going to be from cloth, paper or something else? And are you going to do some real-rope-rigging like Captain Green Hair does? I'm curious! I'm not sure about the sails yet. I'd like to use TLC's sails, but I'm pretty sure that I haven't got enough for this ship. Not enough in same style anyways. Then it'll be blue and black.. not so cool. So either I'm gonna use all the TLC sails that I've got in black and then make the missing ones in paper and draw some black lines so they match the "real" ones. Or I'm gonna make all of them in paper. I'm gonna do some rigging, but not nearly as much, and as correct, as Captain Green Hair. But my rigging are gonna be a bit difficult 'caus I wont to be able to move the deck. So I can't really "connect" the masts with the rigging. we'll see Quote
oDDerFisken Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 Hello everyone! Last time I've updated this ship is a long time ago. But now I've uploaded some new pictures of The Dead Captain which the ship is called. You can find them in the first post. Some sails have been added, but there's still plenty to go. I've also made the crew, and think most of them turned out pretty nice. Then the forecastle and the bowsprit has been changed a bit. Tell me what you think. Comments and ideas are welcome. Quote

Then the forecastle and the bowsprit has been changed a bit. And they look superb now! The whole thing is great. 2 decks of cannons Are you going to replace those stepped grey plates between the main deck and poop deck with slopes? Quote
oDDerFisken Posted April 5, 2009 Author Posted April 5, 2009 Thanks Sly Owl Are you going to replace those stepped grey plates between the main deck and poop deck with slopes? I've considered it. I actually think it was slopes first, but then I tried this out. So if it's gonna be stepped plates or slopes in the end I'm not sure. Quote
Ratshot Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 I think it should be called the "Red Angle" Can't wait for more updates. Broadside Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 My ship is rigged with ropes already, and it is still modular. The trick I used is to make catrolls (is that the right word?) modular as well. This way you can connect the ropes to the mast, and to the decks. In every connection to the deck should be a catroll. It is a bigger job to take the ship apart, but with real rope rigging it will be much more realistic. Here is my ship Hope that helps! Quote
General Armendariz Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Here is my ship Cap'n the link says 'folder not yet public' maybe show an older folder of your ship? Oh and Odder nice ship! I always love how tall pirate ships are! Quote
