I recently bought a bulk bag of LEGO on ebay for cheap; earlier today while I was sorting them I came across some unusual pieces I hadn't seen before, and I was wondering if anyone knew what sets they came from/how useful they are. They probably aren't that rare since most of the pieces I have are just regular old bricks, but I was curious where they may have come from. So without further ado, the pictures:

Mystery Brick #1:

piece_01.jpg

-Some type of windscreen, maybe from a camper?

Mystery Brick #2:

-Technic piece, still being used?

Mystery Brick #3:

-Not sure why they would need to attach something like this on a standard brick.

Mystery Brick #4:

piece_4.jpg

-Looks like some type of support beam, maybe used in old construction sets?

Mystery Brick #5:

piece_5.jpg

-Somewhat useful, better ways to achieve the same thing now.

Mystery Brick #6:

piece_6.jpg

-Odd cheat piece for SNOT?

Mystery Brick #7:

piece_7.jpg

-It's thicker than a standard technic piece and with a smaller hole.

Mystery Brick #8:

-Possibly used in trains, small metal connectors can be seen underneath.

Any ideas? By the way, they all have the LEGO stamping so no imposter bricks.

1: It's a garage segment and appears in some recent sets like the fire station.

2: The inside of an airplane engine.

4: The old 1682 Space Shuttle had this in red. I think a few train crossings also included one or two.

6: A somewhat obscure bracket. They are pretty rare in red though. I have a few from the Metro Park and Service Tower.

7: This is an older type of rotor connector for helicopters. They were used in the 70s and 80s. I think these actually spin more smoothly than the newer kind.

8: An electric sound brick. Since it's black, it's probably the town variety. You can turn the knob to switch between its sounds.

I have never seen 3 and 5 before, but they obviously go together. It might be some old coupling system from the 80s or earlier.

Well, CP5670 is spot on with his analysis.

To be specific (pedantic if you prefer  ), the exact details are as follows:

1. 4219 Roller Door Normal in TrLtBlue. Found in recent City sets like 7744 Police HQ, 7945 Fire Station and the 10159 Airport amongst others. Found in many other sets way back to the early 1980s in other colours.

2. 4869 Plane Jet Engine Centre in Grey. Used in engines in countless sets from the mid-eighties onwards. The first sets I know of that include them are the 6392 International Airport and 6368 Commuter Jet both c1985.

3. 4748 Brick 2 x 4 with Coupling (Female) in Red. This is a coupling part as suggested by the name and would normally be used with 4747 below. It can be found in sets such as the Basic buckets and Basic building sets from the mid 1980s onwards. It is also found in some Fabuland sets. It's clunky design precludes it from most minifig and Technic sets.

4. 2580c01 Support 2 x 2 x 5 Lattice Pillar. This piece was used in the 1682 Space Shuttle, 4555 Loading Station and 4539 Level Crossing from the 1980s and 1990s. In other colours it can be found in a handful of other sets.

5. 4747 Brick 2 x 4 with Coupling (Male) in Red. Like the female version this is a coupling part from Basic and Fabuland sets.

6. 2422 Bracket 2 x 2 in Red. This was used in many sets as a bracket. My favourite use is in the 6394 Metro Park from 1988 where it supports the vertical rail for the car lift. It was also used in various colours in many sets including Pirates and trains during the 1980s and 1990s.

7. 3642 Plate 2 x 3 with Helicopter Rotor Holder in Black. This is not Technic as Posades suggested but was used as the standard helicopter rotor mount during the 1980s usually with the large square 4 blade propellor (3461). In black it can be seen in the 6384 Police Station from 1983.

8. 4774c01 Electric Light & Sound Brick 2 x 2 x 1.33 & Town Siren. As said above, as this is the black version it is the Town version of the siren (the space version was only available in white) and was used in conjunction with the 9v Light & Sound system that was used in several Town and Space sets during the 1980s and 1990s. In order for it to work you would also need the battery box (4760c01). You can also get lights that work with it (4771) and plates with 9v contacts in to route the light and sound to where you want. Light and Sound was first seen in 6450 Police Truck and 6480 Hook and Ladder Truck (Fire Engine) both of which were released in 1985.

Cheers

I can't identify the pieces for you, but there's usually number (of any given amount of digits) somewhere on the brick, and you can enter that number into a Lego reference site (Peeron or Bricklink, for example) and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

Thanks everyone, especially rriggs for the info. As I said I was mainly just curious, don't think I'll ever use them but you never know.

One more mystery I hope someone can solve. I have this head in black:

Anyone know what set it comes from? I've tried checking Peeron, but that particular head in black doesn't come up, and as far as I can tell there isn't a number on minifig heads you can input into a database.

Thanks guys...apparently it had a different ID number, imagine that.

EDIT: last question, I promise. How about this one?

This one is a double sided head, with the other side being a kind of mischievous smirk.
