Excited, Max quickly counts the words on the page to find the fortieth word in Chapter 19. The fortieth word turns out to be the word "hide". Now that you look at it closely, you can see a very faint impression underneath, as if it has been underlined before and then rubbed out.

Posted

Hmmmm...I'm not sure that's it. Does anyone want to try the word "hide?" in the safe? I think that lady's Susan's idea of "word" might be right...

EDIT: Well, no one's around and we have two more chances, so I'll just go ahead and type the word "hide" into the safe.

I think we should try to see what the rubbed out word is first.

think it was just the word "hide" was underlined, and then the line was erased. I don't think there is a rubbed out word.

I'm in favor of trying "hide".

Well that makes two for. Perhaps we should wait a bit though, I mean this is meant to be a group decision and I don't want to go ahead and do something if you haven't properly decided yet.

Sorry I don't have much to contribute right now... busy lookin' around, is all. Good work thus far, though! I've got everything all up in me noggin!

Dragonator pulls out a bottle of Talisker single malt Scotch whiskey, aged 18 years.

Gimme gimme gimme!

Type in "hide," you tool. You know it's the answer. Dragon bastard... :hmpf_bad:

The EB detectives, very excited with their most recent find, walk back through into the Ballroom and over to the safe. With a quick grin and an elaborate flourish, Max types in the word "hide" and hits enter. A loud beep is heard and a fourth red light appears on the display screen.

...

A few moments later the door swings open. Everyone lets out a sigh of relief.

The Contents of the Safe

Inside the safe is a small folder containing two newspaper cuttings and a letter inside an opened envelope. The rest of the space is taken up by two hard leather briefcases, which when opened are found to contain bundles of $100 notes.

Right, what do you want to look at first? Please note that the cash is the property of the owner, and so you cannot take it. Yes I'm looking at you Max.

John picks up the folder and opens it. It contains two newspaper cuttings and an opened envelope with a letter inside it.

What shall we read first?

D'oh, crap! Let's read the letter in the envelope and then investigate the envelope for clues...

Well, that was pointless  . I think I'll read the two newspaper cuttings first then the opened envelope with the letter inside it. I wonder if there is any writing on the folder?

All very interesting, but you do realise that Anthony 'solved' the mystery without any of this, he was supposed to have made calculations based on whatever he had and known who the killer was. We did calculations based on what he had and end up with cash we can't take and some papers he never saw. Somehow, this isn't adding up to me.

That said, I'd like to inspect the money, noting the dates and then count to see just how much our little Chester was paid or extorted from someone to end up with that stack.

That was just a plot point. He didn't really know. It was just for dramatic effect before he was murdered.

Uh-oh. Since we don't know if Lord Chester is dead, perhaps he's just lured us all here to kill us! One by one... Anthony was the first to go, poor thing. Perhaps he knew Anthony so well that he figured Anthony would find something in this room that made him think he'd solved everything. And knowing what an egomaniac Anthony, knew he would go to the center of the room to announce his findings. Maybe that creak was Lord Chester dropping the chandelier on Anthony...

Don't you guys ever read Agatha Christie? Maybe this is like 10 little Indians. Maybe we'll all be killed by someone else here... And Lord Chester orchestrated the whole thing so he could get rid of all of us and not actually get blood on his hands! For those of you who don't read, it's like Saw. It's just a big game. Don't anybody kill anyone else, OK? That's the only way to get out of this alive. Does anyone here knowingly hate someone else in our group? Maybe we should just all go home...and take some of that money with us. :look:

The Letter

Max picks up the envelope and examines it. It is in an old style and has a red wax seal with the Dragon you have seen so often pressed into it. The seal is of course broken as the letter has been opened. On the front of the envelope is simply written "Lord Chester".

Pulling out the letter, you open it and read out loud.

5th July 1992

Dear Lord Chester,

First, let me offer my condolences for the loss of your dear father. This must be a tough time for you, so I will try to be brief.

Let me introduce myself. I am the Guardian. You do not know it, but the manor that you thought belonged to your father is actually owned by someone else, of whom I will refrain from naming. In any event, for centuries your family has been a cover to protect the real owner of the manor, and it shall continue to remain that way. There are only a few rules we require you to follow, and if you stick to them we will leave you alone to do as you will.

The most important rule we have is that you do not open the manor to outsiders. It is a sanctuary from the outside world, and we do not want it disturbed. Secondly, you may not sell or get rid of any of the furnishings, nor may you alter any of the rooms. The manor is to remain as it is; that means no renovations. Feel free to add your own touch to the rooms, but do not move the antiques. Lastly, we ask that you do not enter the cellar, for any reason.

There are one or two other matters still to sort out, and I will have one of my men come to met you soon. Remember that as long as you look after the house and don't break any rules then we will let you do as you please. However if you cross us, then be willing to face the consequences. I have enclosed a couple of things that should prove our legitimacy until my man comes to speak with you. Have a pleasant day.

Yours sincerely,

The Guardian.

The same wax seal is impressed in the bottom right corner of the sheet. There is nothing else in the envelope.

Well, then, let's take a look at the newspaper cuttings now, shall we?

Maybe we should just all go home...and take some of that money with us. :look:

You will recall that the front doors are still locked, unfortunately...

Peter takes a look at the money in the briefcases. There are 20 bundles of notes in each briefcase. You quickly count a couple of bundles, and find that each one contains 50 notes. They all appear very fresh, and the signature is that of the current Minister of the Treasury.

Well, that's certainly quite a bit of money.

Damn it all. We're locked in?? The mansion isn't supposed to be opened to outsiders! Why did he invite us then? What was he up to? And was he killed because he invited us?

Let's find this cellar right away! :sweet:

Uh-oh. Since we don't know if Lord Chester is dead, perhaps he's just lured us all here to kill us! One by one...

I've considered that possibility. Actually, I've considered the possibility that this Guardian group/person killed Chester for breaking the rules and now he wants to kill everyone who could be involved in exposing whatever it is they do here. Bernard and I would be targets because of the DCHP, Miss Simone Sarah Suburu the chick and her boss may be targets because they're involved in construction (I suspect they want to renovate something), the professor may know too much about the history and be considered a risk. Not sure about everyone else, especially your connection to all this, but it's all speculation anyway.

Or Murder by Death! Now we just have to figure out which one of us is Truman Capote!

He's losing it again.

No, he's making sense this time.

You're losing it.

No, really, it's a pretty good movie filled with stars portraying various detectives summoned to a house to be blackmailed. It's a twist on the whole "And Then There Were None" concept, but a good one.

Whatever, no one is interested in your movie musings.

He is, and it could be important to the plot somehow.

It's true, I'm beginning to like you guys, especially you, Bluey.

Bluervo. :hmpf:

Er, right. Sorry.

Ok, Max is right, let's find that cellar, and along the way I propose we move every antique we can find, rip down the wallpaper, move the carpets and generally trash this joint. These bastards want to lock us in so we can get picked off one by one? Well then, it's party time!

Damn it all. We're locked in?? The mansion isn't supposed to be opened to outsiders! Why did he invite us then? What was he up to? And was he killed because he invited us?

IF he invited us at all. :sceptic:

Ew, weird. I like you. I've never liked you in any game ... of life. Maybe we'll get along since we can't kill each other in this one. Well, I certainly don't have connections like you. I was keeping mine secret in case there was any trouble, but they're so mundane what's the point now? I love that chef guy and watch his TV specials and own all of his books and the kids fixed my computer once. Did a real nice job.

Please try to stay calm people. :look: Let's take a look at these two newspaper cuttings, shall we?

The Newspaper Cuttings

Inside the folder there are also two newspaper cuttings. The first one shows a picture of a man in a business suit walking out the front of a large office building with a milling crowd of journalists surrounding him. The caption reads as follows:

Martin Dunne, former Chairman of the Board for Dunne Finances, leaving his building for the last time.

There is also the first two paragraphs of the accompanying article still attached, which reads as follows:

Dunne is Done

Chairman Martin Dunne of Dunne Finances is now what many people are calling "Dunne for". The company has recently been forced to declare Bankruptcy after making heavy losses in the last few years. It is unsure how the company has been reduced to such a level, although there have been many rumours of corruption in recent years. No substantial evidence has yet been uncovered to prove this as true. Whatever the case, this is certainly a sever blow to Mr. Dunne, of whom many say is not likely to ever recover.

Rival company CEO Chester Dracus, of Dracus Incorporated, had the following to say. "It is certainly a sad loss for the finance sector to lose such an esteemed business, however I am sure that their clients have no reason to fear, as we will be happy to accommodate them". Dracus Incorporated recently bought the Client Database from Dunne Finances after it was discovered that the company would be going under.

It is...

The rest of the article is missing. On the back is written "14th March 1987".

The second newspaper cutting reads as follows:

Section E: Local News 17th September 2005

The Dragon's Hoard: Myth or Reality?

For centuries rumours have surrounded the existence of an ancient treasure of immense value which hidden in secret somewhere around Dratos. The true question is, where could it be hidden? But first, a bit about the treasure, for those who don't know.

It is said that many, many years ago, during the time of dragons, there was a mighty dragon known as Ragnir the Mighty. In his lifetime he collected a hoard of fine treasures, from gold and silver coins dating back to the Agaetian Empire, to many priceless examples of Draconian Art. It is said to be the largest collection of Draconian artefacts on the planet, and yet nobody knows where it could be.

If such a treasure truly did exist, then it makes sense that it is hidden in one of the few places left in the city and surrounding countryside not open to public access. Dragon's Keep and the Royal Archives immediately come to mind, but there are also a number of country estates, such as Dragon's Retreat and Homewood House, which could also offer likely hiding places.

Whatever the truth, it is unlikely that this treasure will ever be found, yet this journalist cannot help but feel that it is out there somewhere, waiting to be discovered. Many people...

That might not be such a smart idea, remember what Anthony wrote in his notebook?

One of the detectives has some connection to an underground organisation called The Red Dragon, couldn't find out what the connection is though and nothing about the organistation itself. Perhaps I will speak with him if it turns out to be relevant.

Corruption. Competitors. Well, that's making things clearer, and makes one wonder if someone might be in need of some cash as well. Might also promote the blackmail theory if Chester knew something he didn't tell... Lots of motive there. I suspect we'll all be found to have lots of motive before it's over, though I can't really see mine yet. :sceptic:

Oh, and a client database. That might tie in the computer nerd.

The Dragon's Hoard: Myth or Reality?

Dragon whores! What? Oh, you need to work on your diction.

Oh, treasure! That's just as good. Well. It tends to help with the former. Let's find that horde!

That might not be such a smart idea, remember what Anthony wrote in his notebook?

Maybe you should tend to your business and let us tend to ours, our way, Mr. Dragonwithasecret. Just who is in charge here?

Yeah, you'd better watch it. Think we need you to solve this? Think we can read the Bible ourselves, Punky Brewster? Huh? Huh? Do ya? Do ya? Where were you in 1987? What did you have to do with all of this? Maybe your name is Dragonator Dunne.
