They were posted before in the All 2009 sets thread. But they didn't cause that much fuzz. And I must say that I don't like them that much... :/ That remote-control unit just seems so bloated. And I'm guessing that the black IR reciever thingie isn't movable. And why the big molded on fender?

Yeah, I agree on that they are ugly. However, on that green alternative on the 8184 pic, the windshield seems to be a black Speed Racer one.

In the german catalogue for the first half of 2009 is only a pic of 8183. The pic of 8184 is new for me. thanks for sharing.

No problem. :sweet:

Also, the 8184 looks like an ambulance. :sceptic:

I don't care if the models are ugly, it's easy to build a new car on the same base. If they're not very expensive, I will probably get one of those.

Yeah, me too. I will probably get one just for the parts.

i did not see the possibilities of the power function pieces before and let the monster dino slip pass me. i think this new 4 channel rc should open up lots of possibilities. the receiver and the motors though should be separate pieces. don't think they are from a single piece as shown in the catalog. it's probably just how they illustrated it. i'll be getting one (or two) if they are cheap enough.

I don't have the set myself. Ash_274 from Bricklink submitted the image a while ago. I don't really know how he obtained the set. I just wanted to share the image since you people seemed to be interested.

I think the base could have been smaller. The black bumper on the front and the dark bley plates on sides are not necessary. It would give us more building options if it was a minimalist design. I may order a couple if my cousin wants to play with them. If he doesn't, I'm so not paying 40 Euros, no way !

Seems to have enough force to seriously speed up the model.

But what about steering? I'd rather have the base installed in a bigger model.

I'm just missing the whole RC idea when you can only apply this motor to small models.

I would really like to see a 8880 or GTB with that kind of speed.

My idea was to make the front 'steer' by a single axle.

Then you could connect that axle to a custom steering installation so that you can drive supercars with it.

But then again, Tiny turbo's RC sound cool too...

I hope that they will release some PF gear for larger RC models.

Hm... that RC base/chasis doesn't look as bad as it did in the catalogue. :look: If one of those ever goes on sale, I might actually pick one up! I can see a bunch of uses for this thing - even in Star Wars! I would love to make an RC Landspeeder or AAT or something! :oh:

Tiny turbo's RC?! *huh* Those would have to be, like, micro motors and a tiny receiver! And it would be pretty damn expensive! :sceptic: But yeah, that would be cool! :sweet:

correction, i meant these sets against the previous RC sets that we've seen.

it's the same as comparing Minifig-cars to tiny-turbo's.

So in a way these are tiny turbo versions of the older/bigger cars.

I might pick up one of these just for the PF elements, trying to get something bigger moving (if possible)

Is this the smallest RC PF car motor we've had so far? Because judging from the review that's in this forum, it would make a pretty good minifig RC car/truck wouldn't it?

Exactly what I was thinking!

Does anybody know a bit more about this set and specially the RC unit with motor? I have a few questions:

1. The controller looks to be the same as in the other PF sets or is this diffrent?

2. Is the steering analogue (eg. not only full left or full right, but you can held it just a bit to left or right) ?

3. Is the steering done by a motor (probably is, if its analogue) but it could also be magnetic. Easy way to test it is to swing full left or right and see if you can push the front wheels in another direction by hand. If it is motor you could probably not do this without adding a lot of force. With magnetic they could be turned by hand without much force.

4. Is the speed analogue?

5. Is there a diffrence in reverse and forward speed?

6. How powerfull are the motor(s)? What effect does larger tires do the car? Quicker, slower? Or just slow acceleration but higher top speed?

I think this unit is nice. I would probably buy a few of these when they are avaiable.

And when you have a NXT with Infrared Link then you can controll this unit from the NXT

There is a review of this set done by "Dieselboy_M" but it did not answer my questions. Even the video he has provided on his page was not much help either in answering my questions.

Another question,

7. Does it have the new speed control commands announced for Power Function trains?

Observations:

Only 2xAA won't last long.

Could put a minifig head in front of IR housing for an F1 racer.

I don't criticize the side wings. Those solid build points keep the model from constantly falling apart as kids bash it. The front crash plate serves the same purpose.

NXT control would be amusing.

I bought 8184 last Saturday. After a quick testing it seems ok, but it's a little unreliable/oversensitive. I´don't know if it was the loosening tyres or my girlfriends long hairs on the floor that were jammed into the car's wheels and axels, but the steering got jammed now and then. The speed controller seemed it almost has only on/off modes, but I think it has at least some acceleration skills. Testing continues today. In my opinion this set is quite cool, since I haven't had a RC car for 20 years... :cry_sad:

The controller requires 3 AAA batteries, and the receiver 3 AA sized ones.

Neat.

Please tell us about the steering mechanism. Is it magnetic or motorized rack+pinion?

You can easily turn the front wheels by pushing with fingers. Yesterday i tested the car a little bit, and after removing all scum from the axles and wheels the steering still wasn't very stable.

I bought the 8183 a few weeks back. I was sooo excited about it and immediately bought it when i saw it in my local Lego store. But sadly, I was greatly disappointed. The steering kinda sucks. You can't do gradual turns. It's just middle, extreme left, and extreme right. The motor is just okay. It's pretty fast, but has no power. You can't do any gearing whatsoever. I tried attaching it to the power miners thread wheels and it barely moved. I guess its good as a minifig car to play with. But not really for experimenting on gearing and stuff.
