snefroe Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 i was on legofan's website yesterday and i came across the article which announced the selection of the next cycle of ambassadors. strangely enough, most ambassadors of the first cycle were reappointed... that got me thinking. did anybody see/hear,... any sign of the ambassadors in the last six months, let's say, the first cycle? can these people show us any evidence that lego changed models/decisions, based on their advice? how many ambassadors are, in fact, active members of this website, for instance? can't think of any one... perhaps on rebelscum or fbtb... why is it that tlc didn't bother to call for candidates thru all major websites of the community and why didn't the first cycle of ambassadors advice tlc to do so? why is it that a majority of ambassadors was re-enstated? what are the criteria these days to becoming an ambassador? it seems to me, based on the bios of these guys, you need to be a family man, have a job and you have been playing with lego all your life... I'm sure that Lenny from CC was elected in this second run. As for their actual roles, well it beats me! I have not seen any articles saying what they have done or what they have changed. I guess they just make small influences which we don't know about. Hopefully we will hear more about their roles as I would love to know what has been done and what will be done. Jon. Quote
ericbrok Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 A few weeks ago on LEGOFan.org, the same question was raised about the 'presence' of LEGO Ambassadors. This was (part of ) my answer: "Please note that there are Ambassadors from different countries, each in some way or another involved in their local communities. Did you check out the Dutch or the German forums? E.g. After I got back from BrickFest, first thing I did was explaining the workings of the Factory concept on our two main Dutch LEGO forums. (snip) In any case, be assured that almost any LEGO forum is beeing kept an eye on by one or the other Ambassador (note we are not on an assigned roster - it's just our usual habit :) and if there's a specific issue or question you want to bring to our attention, just contact any ambassador. " Also, in response to this issue, a special forum 'Ask an Ambassador' was created on LEGOFan.org, so there's a place to contact us Ambassadors besides the Ambassador(s) you may know personally. In that forum, fellow Ambassador Lenny Hoffman also answered to this issue: http://www.legofan.org/FORUMS/ShowPost.asp...spx?PostID=2124 Also, please note that in his call for 2nd cycle Ambassador applications, Jake mcKee did list some activities the 1st cycle ambassadors were involved in. (http://news.lugnet.com/lego/?n=3495) And in my local call for applications in the Dutch forums, I gave a more elaborate impression. (If you can read Dutch: sixth message at http://www.debouwsteen.com/forum_viewtopic...ic.php?30.18729 .) So it's like you just have to shine the Batman searchlight around the sky to call on us ;) Quote
ericbrok Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 More specifically answering your questions: snefroe1 said: "can these people show us any evidence that lego changed models/decisions, based on their advice?" As for our influence on product design, it has been mostly like us supplying ideas about what (A)FOLS would like, within a general scope or theme that is considered for two years from now. We don't get to see (yet) if and what specific decisions are being influenced. snefroe1 said: "how many ambassadors are, in fact, active members of this website, for instance? " Besides me, several others scan Eurobricks occasionally. Seems I'm one of the few users that uses his/hers proper name on Eurobricks anyway... snefroe1 said: "why is it that tlc didn't bother to call for candidates thru all major websites of the community and why didn't the first cycle of ambassadors advice tlc to do so? " Apparently Eurobricks is not the center of the LEGO universe :) It was on many 'other' major websites of the communty. Personally I think that if important news is posted on LUGnet and LEGOfan, it's up to the other communties themselves to take notice and copy it forward. snefroe1 said: "why is it that a majority of ambassadors was re-enstated?" They reapplied and were selected. snefroe1 said: "what are the criteria these days to becoming an ambassador? it seems to me, based on the bios of these guys, you need to be a family man, have a job and you have been playing with lego all your life" You're right. Jobless single females who never played with LEGO don't stand a chance to represent our community. Quote
tsunamik Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 As a fellow Ambassador to Erik from the first cycle I can also add there are quite a bit Ambassadors do. We have asked for feedback, and recieved it from being able to reach Brand Retail to S@H. Of course, can we share everything we do - No. In fact quite the opposite. we were bound not to share some information, but at least get some fan reaction to TLC decisions. As for why most of us were probably re-instated, well First cycle was really the beta. Now we're off on more items as our feedbakc has been requested more often and our visibiliy within TLC grows. These things do take time, don't expect these things to change overnight. java script:emoticon(':-D') Now as to criteria, there was a lot, and I think the post at lugnet pretty much sums that up. However, if you think you do meet all those criteria, then I certainly would encourage you to follow up and keep your eyes peeled for the next cycle and be prepared to submit a LEGO resume of sorts at to those accomplishments that show you deserve to be an Ambassador. Cheers! ~Tk Quote
SuvieD Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 IIRC if you listen to the audio at brickfest you hear Jake talk about getting feedback about the new remote train system they were working on. So, the new trains could have totally sucked without the Ambassador program. Oh and EB is the center of the LEGO information universe. It is rare that something important LEGO is going on that someone at EB doesn't make a post about it. It is nice because not only can I come here and get 90% of all LEGO current news but I can also talk about it freely, read what others have to say and to usually get pics or links to the source. Also the leaked stuff is nice also. ;) I think we will soon see some changes but I wouldn't expect anything before 2007. Quote
Norro Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Well at least 3 ambassadors scan regularly enough to see this thread ;)... God Bless, Nathan Quote
