hmm

were Vikings really clean shaven? The ancient greeks used to portrait them with moustaches at least!

And some sort of neckwear I forgot the name of...a circular sort of thing...snakelike and twisted..argh! My archaeology lesson fails me...

Also note: Antonio Banderas portraits an arabian nobleman in "The 13th Warrior" so his facial hair might be close to nothing...^^

What did my old history teacher always say: "Men without beards are castrates"...

Castratedly yours,

Cutty

Ehhh Cutty i Dont how the ancient greeks could portrait the Vikings..... there is altalest 1000 years between them ;)

Well it were not really the Vikings who were portraied, rather the Gauls, and it were not really the Greeks who did the portraying, but in this case greek-influenced hellenic artists form Pergamon in asia minor (Turkey today). They are essentially Greeks, though they acquired the greek culture through the expansion and later fall of Alexandros' empire, which fell apart after his death in 323 b.c. in Babylon and was separated between his generals, the "diadochoi" (greek name) of which Ptolemaios, who took regime over egypt, may be the most prominent.

Examples:

The Dying Gaul:12

And here another example, that shows, that I was indeed incorrect (sorry!). This gallic nobleman, who is supposedly from the same group of plastics as the Dying Gaul above, is indeed shaven and beardless.

I now remember the name of the specific neckwear the norsemen used to wear (notice this item on the first plastic!): Torques, which was indeed common with both men and women.

Please note: the above plastics are, if my memory does not fail me, from either the 3rd or 2nd century B.C.!

Who? Me?

;)

If it had been the poster only I wouldn't have been sure cos Kirk Douglas also starred in "Spartacus", another ancient themed movie. But since it's Viking Month that wouldn't have been "apropriate". And then I saw his "injured" eye which he didn't have in "Spartacus", either. So it had to be "The Vikings" :)
