fred67 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 This is the closest subject I could find in my search, so hope it's appropriate to ask here... Is there a special cloth LEGO uses? By that I mean that the cloth that TLG uses seems very tightly woven and stiff, and when cut it doesn't shred at the edges as much (because of the tight weave). So is there a thread count and type of material I should be looking for? Do they starch the hell out of it to make it stiff? Quote
Fires-storm Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 This is actually my prototype cloth hood, which I uploaded to mocpages: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/196357 Quote

I think the closest thing to it is printable fabric on a roll or in sheets. They sell it at Joann, a craft chain store, by the aisle with all of the shirts and iron-ons. I hope this helped . Quote

Just take a cape into a fabric store and ask what kind of fabric it is Quote

Im sorry. All I wanted was to have a go at making some clothing, not to rip you or anyone off, im not like that, besides if I ever had anyones designs for something like this I would most likely ask before and give them credit if I was allowed to use their designs. If you could point me to any useful templates then I'd be very grateful. Ive edited my previous post, hope it makes you feel better. Im sorry if this post is off-topic, I just wanted to say all this. fred67 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 My first cape. I just used the regular LEGO cape for a template. The lady at Joannes did not know what fabric it was, and couldn't think of anything quite like it, so I just walked around looking at the fabrics. I was specifically looking at the cut edges to see which fabrics didn't fray so much, although I think the technique of using wet glue around the cut lines to keep it from fraying would work on regular fabric. Anyhow, I noticed this fabric was obviously cut, but still had a very neat edge - I wasn't even looking at colors, but this turned out to be perfect. It's microfiber suede, and looks like a leather cape on my minifigure. I just cut it out with scissors and got a leather hole punch (the package just calls it a "Revolving Punch"). One hole for the neck, a smaller hole for the other cutout where it folds over... Now let me say this: when you're travelling a good cloak is worth more than all your other possessions put together. If you've nowhere to sleep, it can be your bed and blanket. It will keep the rain off your back and the sun from your eyes. You can conceal all manner of interesting weaponry beneath it if you are clever, and a smaller assortment if you are not.But beyond all that, two facts remain to recommend a cloak. First, very little is as striking as a well-worn cloak, billowing lightly about you in the breeze. And second, the best cloaks have innumerable little pockets that I have an irrational and overpowering attraction towards. Now I just need a hood. I have the LEGO ones, and I think it would go well with this, but I want my character to have red hair... Quote
